Maria Louise Ewing(March 27, 1950 – January 9, 2022) was an Americanoperasinger who sung bothsopranoandmezzo-sopranoroles. She was born inDetroit,Michigan.

Ewing made her debut at theMetropolitan Operain 1976 inMozart'sThe Marriage of Figaro.She starred asCarmen,Dorabella inMozart'sCosi fan tutte,Salome,the title role inL'incoronazione di Poppea,Marie inBerg'sWozzeckandShostakovich'sLady Macbeth of Mtsensk.[1][2]She also sang and appeared inHenry Purcell'sDido and Aeneas.

Ewing was married to directorPeter Hall.Their daughter is actressRebecca Hall.Ewing died in Detroit on January 9, 2022, two months before her 72nd birthday.[3]
