TheMatterhorn(inGerman;Italian:Cervino,French:Mont CervinorLe Cervin) is ranked, by height, 12thmountainin the EuropeanAlps.[3]Its height is 4,478metres.[4]

The mountain is on the border betweenSwitzerlandandItaly,it towers over the Swiss village ofZermattand the Italian villageBreuil-Cerviniain the Val Tournanche. The name of the mountain comes from theGermanwordsMatte,meaningvalleyormeadow,andHorn,which meanspeak.[5]
