Mikhail Nikolaevitch Baryshnikov(Russian:Михаил Николаевич Барышников,born 27 January 1948) is aRussian-Americandancer,choreographer,andactor.Born inLatviatoRussianparents during the time of theSoviet Union,he later became anAmericancitizen. After a promising start in theKirov Balletat theMariinsky Theatre,Leningrad,he defected toCanadain 1974 for more opportunities in western dance.
He has been called the world's greatest living maleballetdancer.CriticClive Barnes once called him, "The most perfect dancer I have ever seen".[1]
While on a tour inCanadawith theKirov Balletin 1974, Baryshnikov asked forpolitical asyluminToronto.He became an American citizen in 1986. He has won threeEmmy Awards.
Part of his significance is that he danced bothclassical balletandmodern dance.From 1978 he worked full-time in theNew York City Balletunder the direction ofGeorge Balanchine.In 1980 he became artistic director of theAmerican Ballet Theatre.Later he founded his own company and moved towards modern dance. He has danced many times on television in North America.
