Mogadishu(Somali:Muqdisho) is thecapital cityof theAfricancountryofSomalia. It is also the largest city in that country. It is located in the coastalBanadirregion on theSomali Sea.The city has been an importantportfor theregionfor manycenturies.[1]Estimates of the city'spopulationare between 1.5 and 3 million people.

History[change|change source]

Tradebetween the people in the Mogadishu area with other areas along theSomali Seacoast ofEast Africastarted as early as the1st century.Muslimtraders from theArabian Peninsulacame to the area during the 10th century. Because of trade with them,Islamspread through Somalia. ThePortuguesetried to take control of the city, but failed. In 1871Barghash bin Said, thesultanofZanzibar, controlled the city.

In 1892,Ali bin SaidletItalyuse the city. Italy bought the city in 1905. They madeMogadiscio(Italian for Mogadishu) the capital ofItalian Somaliland. The Italians took control of the area around the city in 1919 after minorresistance.Italian Mogadiscio grew from a small village of 1,000 inhabitants in the 1890s to a modern capital in 1940 of nearly 100,000 persons (of whom more than 1/3 were Italians), that was second only to Asmara in Eritrea for development inside the Italian Empire.

Britishforcesthat were inKenyaduringWorld War IIcaptured Mogadishu onFebruary 26,1941.The British ruled until they gave Italy control of the city again in 1952. Somalia becameindependentin 1960 with Mogadishu as its capital.

Rebelforces entered and took the city in 1990. They forcedPresidentMohamedSiad Barreto resign and leave the country in January 1991. He went toLagos,Nigeria. Some of the rebels said thatAli Mahdi Muhammadwas the new president. Others said thatMohamed Farrah Aididwas president. A group ofUnited States Marineslanded near Mogadishu onDecember 9,1992.They were the first part of theUnited Nationspeacekeepingforces duringOperation Restore Hopeto go to the country. Mogadishu has had many years ofcivil war. This is because thegovernmentof Somalia fell in 1991. This has included manysuicide bombingsbyjihadistgroupal-Shabaab.In 2017, an al-Shabaab suicide bomberkilled over 500 people.

Economy[change|change source]

Mogadishu is acommercialandfinancialcenter for Somalia. Theeconomygot better after theSomali Civil Warbut there are still problems. Because the government does not have control of the whole country, there is lesstaxationorregulatorycosts. This makesbusinessesnot cost as much as it does in other places. Businesses have hiredarmedmilitias to havesecurity. This is reducingviolencein the city.

The mainindustriesof the city include makingfoodandbeveragesas well astextiles. The main textile iscotton. The mainmarketmany different types of goods from food toelectronicitems.

Mogadishu has the most port traffic of any port in Somalia. It is still a major seaport. However, there has been a lot ofpiracyaround Somalia's coastal areas. This makes traderisky.
