Inhistory,politicsandreligion,apurgeis a removal from ajobor powerfulpositionof people who are consideredundesirableordangerousby those in power from agovernment,anotherorganization,their teamleaders,orsocietyas a whole. A group undertaking such an action is labeled aspurgingitself. Purging is a form ofpersecution.

Purges can be either nonviolent or violent; the nonviolent purges are often done by the simple removal of people from their jobs or a powerful position, and the violent purges are often done by theimprisonment,exile,ormurder(either throughexecutionthrough ashowtrialor throughextrajudicial killingwithout a trial) of those who have been purged.
