Sir Roger PenroseKtOMFRS(born 8 August 1931) is anEnglishmathematicalphysicist.He isEmeritusRouse BallProfessor of Mathematicsat theUniversity of Oxfordand emeritus fellow ofWadham College.

Penrose won theNobel Prize in Physics,jointly, in 2020.[1]Previously he had won the 1988Wolf PrizeinPhysics,which he shared withStephen Hawkingfor thePenrose–Hawking singularity theorems.[2]

He is renowned for his work inastrophysicswithStephen Hawking,in particular his contributions togeneral relativityandcosmology.He is also arecreational mathematicianandphilosopher.

Roger Penrose is the brother of mathematicianOliver Penroseandchess grandmasterJonathan Penrose.His sister, nowShirley Hodgson,is a notablegeneticist.He was born inColchester,Essex,England.He was awarded theCopley Medalin 2008.

In 2020, he shared theNobel Prize in PhysicswithReinhard GenzelandAndrea M. Ghez.[3]
