The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES),also calledRojava,is a self-governing area in northeastern Syria that is not officially recognized.[1]It includes separate areas called cantons inAfrin,Jazira,Euphrates,Raqqa,Tabqa,Manbij,andDeir Ez-Zor.[2][3]The region got self-rule in 2012 during the ongoing Rojava conflict and the larger Syrian civil war. Its main military force, theSyrian Democratic Forces(SDF), has been involved in the war.[4][5]

The region is not officially recognized as autonomous by thegovernment of Syriaor other governments, except for theCatalan Parliament.[10][11][12]It has widespread support for itsdemocratic,sustainable, equal, andfeministlaws.[13][14][15][16]Northeastern Syria is home to diverse ethnic groups includingKurdish,Arab,andAssyrianpopulations, as well as smaller communities ofTurkmen,Armenians,Circassians,andYazidis.

Since 2016, Turkish and Turkish-backed forces have taken control of parts of northern Syria through military operations against the SDF. AANES and its SDF have said they will protect all areas under their control from any attacks.[17]

The region is located west of theTigris,east of theEuphrates,and south of the Turkish border. It bordersIraqto the southeast and theIraqi Kurdistan Regionto the northeast. The area is mostlyflatwith some lowhillsand a few mountains, includingMount Abdulazizand part of theSinjarMountain Range.[18]

It includes parts of the al-Hasakah, Raqqa, Deir ez-Zor, and Aleppo governorates in Syria.[19]
