Rutger Oelsen Hauer(January 23, 1944 – July 19, 2019) was aDutchstage, television, and movie actor.

Hauer's career began during the year 1969 with the role in a popular Dutch television seriesFloris,directed byPaul Verhoeven.His notable works includeFlesh & Blood,Blind Fury,Blade Runner,The Hitcher,Nighthawks,Wedlock,Sin City,Confessions of a Dangerous Mind,Ladyhawke,Buffy the Vampire Slayer,The Osterman Weekend,The Blood of Heroes,Batman Begins,Hobo with a Shotgun,The Rite,and he won aGolden Globe Awardfor Best Supporting Actor for his role inEscape from Sobibor.Hauer was a dedicated environmentalist and founded anAIDSawareness organization, the Rutger Hauer Starfish Association.

Hauer was born on January 23, 1944 inBreukelen,Netherlands.[1]His parents were Arend and Teunuk Hauer, both drama teachers. Hauer was raised inBeetsterzwaag, Netherlands.Hauer lived inMalibu, California,United States.Hauer married Ineke ten Kate in 1985. He had one daughter, Aysha Hauer, with his first wife Heidi Merz. He was the grandfather of fashionmodelLeandro Maeder.

Hauer was made a knight in theOrder of the Netherlands Lionin 2013.[2]

Hauer died on 19 July 2019 at his home inBeetsterzwaag,Switzerlandat the age of 75 after a short-illness.[3]
