The Three Musketeers(French:Les Trois Mousquetaires) is anovelofadventure fictionbyAlexandre Dumas, père.It is the story of a young man namedd'Artagnan.He leaves home to become amusketeer of the guard of KingLouis XIII of France.He and his friendsAthos,Porthos,andAramislive by themotto,"One for all, and all for one" (French:Un pour tous, et tous pour un!).

The story of d'Artagnan is continued inTwenty Years AfterandThe Vicomte de Bragelonne.Those three novels by Dumas are together known as theD'Artagnan Romances.

The Three Musketeerswas first published in serial form in the magazineLe Sièclebetween March and July 1844. All the books sold well and made plenty of money for Dumas. The story was later made into several plays and movies.
