WAV(orWAVE), short forWaveform Audio File Format,is aMicrosoftandIBMaudio file formatstandard for storing an audiobitstreamonPCs.It resembles theRIFFbitstream formatin the sense that it stores data in “chunks”. It is also close to theIFFand theAIFFformat used onAmigaandMacintoshcomputers, respectively. It is the main format used onWindowssystems for raw and typically uncompressed audio. The default bitstream encoding is the MicrosoftPulse Code Modulation(LPCM) format, although other codecs, such asMP3,are allowed as well.
