Alberto Kenya Fujimori Inomoto(July 26, 1938 – September 11, 2024) was thePresidentofPerufrom 1990 to 2000. A controversial figure in Peruvian politics, his government is credited with the creation ofFujimorism,defeating theShining Pathinsurgency and restoring Peru'smacroeconomicstability.[2]

In 2001, Fujimori's head ofintelligence,Vladimiro Montesinos,was accused of doingillegalthings. People thought that Fujimori was also involved.

After that, Fujimori went toJapan,because he had Japanese ancestors, thus is acitizenthere. Japan protected him from Peruvianlawsince they do not find any valid accusation. Fujimori resigned the Presidency of Peru.Valentín Paniaguawaselectedpresident by theCongresssoon after Fujimori resigned.

His daughter,Keiko Fujimoriis also a politician and ran for president three times, the most recent being is 2021.

Prison and release

In 2005 Fujimori was detained inChile.After hisextraditionin 2007 the Peruviangovernmentput him ontrialand convicted him. He was sentenced to several years in prison. On 24 December 2017, PresidentKuczynskipardoned him on health grounds[3]but in 2019 he was put back in prison. He was released in December 2023 because of bad health.

Fujimori died of problems caused bytongue canceron September 11, 2024 in Lima at the age of 86.[4]
