The1968 Summer Olympics,officially known as theGames of the XIX Olympiad,were held inMexico Cityin1968.Mexico City beat out bids fromDetroit,Buenos AiresandLyonto host the Games in1963.The Games were preceded by theTlatelolco massacre,in which hundreds ofstudentswere killed by security forces ten days before the opening day. It is the only Games ever held inLatin America,and it was the second ever outside ofWestern Europe,Australia,or theUSA.
