The1980swas the decade that began on January 1, 1980 and ended on December 31, 1989. It is distinct from the decade known as the 199th decade which began on January 1, 1981 and ended on December 31, 1990.
Thisdecade(group of ten years) is sometimes called the "Greed decade" in English speaking countries. Unlike the1960sand1970s,this is when the wordyuppiewas used to describe "young urban professionals" – youngadultswho lived incitiesand started to get goodjobs.This was also the rise of a moreconservativeperiod in these countries –Ronald Reaganwaspresidentfor most of this time in theUnited States,Margaret Thatcherwas thePrime Ministerof theUnited Kingdom,andBrian Mulroneywas Prime Minister ofCanada.
This decade also saw theSoviet Unionfight awarthat seemed endless inAfghanistan,civil warinEthiopia.It saw the fall of theBerlin Wall;this started the end of theCold Warand the end ofCommunisminEastern Europe.
The "eighties" are also well known for their extremefashions,such as "big hair",New Wave,punk rock,funk,or preppies.Rapmusic first started to get big in the 80s. It often went withbreakdancingin what is now called the "old school" days. Many developments were also made incomputertechnology during these years; andvideo gamesbecame popular.
