Acetylcysteine,also known asN-acetylcysteine(NAC) or Acetadone, is amedication.It is used to treatparacetamol overdoseand to loosen thickmucuswhen someone haspneumoniaorbronchitisor other (similar) chronic bronchopulmonarydisorders.[1]It has been used to treatlactobezoarin infants. It can be takenintravenously,by mouth, or inhaled as a mist.[1]Some people use it as adietary supplement.[2][3]

Acetylcysteine is theN-acetylderivative of the amino acidL-cysteine.It is aprecursor,when thehuman bodymakes theantioxidantglutathione.
