Abookmaker,bookieorTurf Accountantis person or company that collectbetsfor sporting events. Bets are placed and the winnings are paid when the chosen team wins or the event happens. If team that was chosen wins, the person betting will win their money back with some earnings.[1]

Bookmakers are very popular inUKandIreland.The person betting can chose from many variations. Most bets are made in sports such asfootball,horse racingandrugby.[2]Bets can also be placed for events such asAcademy Awardsorpresidentialwinners. The first known bookmaker in the United Kingdom was Harry Ogden in the1790s.[3]
