Homophobiais thefearorpoor treatmentofhomosexuals.The word was created in the 1960s by apsychologistnamed George Weinberg.[1]The word "homophobia" is often used together with the word "transphobia"in documents explaining human rights violation ofLGBTpeople byUnited NationsandCouncil of Europe.[2]

There are events to stop homophobia, like the "gay pride parades" and "International Day Against Homophobia"on May 17.[3]It was first celebrated on 17 May 2005 in more than 40 countries.Argentina,Brazil,MexicoandColombiahave developedmass mediacampaigns against homophobia since 2002.[4]In some places, it isillegalto treat people badly because they are homosexual, and it is ahate crimeto hurt them for that reason. Laws against suchdiscriminationhave been made in several countries. Internationally, theDeclaration of Montrealand theYogyakarta Principleswere adopted in 2006.[5]

Successful strategies to prevent homophobicprejudiceandbullyingin schools have included teaching students about historical figures who were gay, or who suffered discrimination because of their sexuality.[6]A person who is homophobic may be called a homophobe.

Homophobia is often related toheterosexism,the belief that sex and love between men and women is better than other types of sex and love. Such as sex between two men or sex between two women.
