John Bardeen

John Bardeen(23 May 1908 – 30 January 1991) was an Americanphysicistandelectrical engineer.He is the only person to win twoNobel Prizes in Physics.

Early life

Bardeen was born inMadison, Wisconsin.His father, Charles Bardeen was a Professor at theMedical Schoolof the University of Wisconsin. He completed his bachelor's degree and master's degree in Electrical Engineering at theUniversity of Wisconsin-Madison.He completed hisPhDin Physics atPrinceton Universityin 1936.

Bardeen worked withWilliam ShockleyandWalter Brattainto invent thetransistoron 23 December 1947. They shared theNobel Prize in Physicsfor 1956.

Later, Bardeen worked withLeon CooperandJohn Robert Schrieffer.They created the BCS theory ofsuperconductivity,named after them. For this work they shared the Nobel Prize in Physics for 1972.

Bardeen was a Professor of Electrical Engineering and Physics at theUniversity of Illinois at Urbana-Champaignfrom 1951 to 1991.
