Melunis acityinFrance.It is thecapitalof theSeine-et-Marnedepartment, in theÎle-de-Franceregion of France. The city is about 40 kilometres southeast ofParis,in a bend of the riverSeine.BetweenBrieandGâtinais.It is between 37 metres and 102 metres of above thesea.At the last count in1999,37.500 people lived there.

The city is home to the production of theBrie de Melun,a saltier variant of theBrie de Meaux.A school for police officers has been in the city since1945.Other than that there arepharmaceuiticalandaviationindustriesand aprisoncomplex in the city.

The first historical mention of the city is in52BC,asMelodunum.The modern name of the city comes from the name it had in the6th century,Meluneum.Clovis Imakes aduchyout of the city. He also hasfortificationsbuilt. The city gains new importance. The city is also prone toraidsof thevikings,most notably those in852and866.

When the département Seine-et-Marne was formed on the 4th March 1790, Melun became its capital.

A campus of theÉcole nationale de l'aviation civile(French civil aviation academy) is in Melun.
