Rem Koolhaas
Remment Lucas "Rem" Koolhaas(Dutch pronunciation:[rɛm koːlɦaːs];born as Remko L. Olhaas, 17 November1944inRotterdam) is a Dutcharchitect,architectural theorist,urbanistand Professor in Practice of Architecture and Urban Design at theGraduate School of DesignatHarvard University.Koolhaas went to theArchitectural Association School of ArchitectureinLondonand theCornell UniversityinIthaca, New York.Koolhaas is the founding partner ofOMA,and of its research-oriented counterpart AMO based inRotterdam,the Netherlands. In 2005, he co-foundedVolume Magazinetogether withMark WigleyandOle Bouman.
He is thought of as one of the most important architectural thinkers and urbanists of his generation.[1][2][3]In 2000, Rem Koolhaas won thePritzker Prize.[4]In 2008,Timeput him in their top 100 ofThe World's Most Influential People.[5]

Koolhaas' habit of shaking up established conventions has made him one of the most influential architects of his generation. A disproportionate number of the profession's rising stars, includingWiny Maasof the Dutch firm MVRDV andBjarke Ingelsof the Copenhagen-based BIG, did stints in his office. Architects dig through his books looking for ideas; students all over the world emulate him. The attraction lies, in part, in his ability to keep us off balance. Unlike other architects of his stature, such asFrank GehryorZaha Hadid,who have continued to refine their singular aesthetic visions over long careers, Koolhaas works like a conceptual artist—able to draw on a seemingly endless reservoir of ideas.
