Sichuan(Chinese:Tứ Xuyên;pinyin:Sì Chuān;audio speaker iconlisten) is aprovincein westernChinawith its capital atChengdu.It is also informally called Thục (pinyin:Shǔ). Its Governor isWei Hongand itsCPC Ctte SecretaryisWang Dongming.With a population of 87,250,000 (2006), Sichuan is the third most populated administrative division ofChina.Sichuan used to be theprovincewith the most people inChinabeforeChongqingwas separated from it, makingHenanthe mostpopulous.However, when includingmigrants,Guangdonghas more people thanHenan.

The name Tứ Xuyên (pinyin:Sì Chuān) is an abbreviation of Tứ Xuyên lộ (pinyin:Sì Chuān Lù,translated as "Four circuits/subdivisions of rivers" ), which is itself shortened from xuyên hiệp bốn lộ (pinyin:Chuān Xiá Sì Lù,translated as "Four circuits of rivers and gorges" ).[1]Archived2008-01-22 at theWayback Machine

The Li Bai Memorial (located at his birthplace, Zhongba Town of northern Jiangyou County) is amuseumin memory of the Chinese poet of theTang Dynasty,Li Bai.It was prepared in 1962 on the occasion of 1,200th anniversary of his death, completed in 1981 and opened to the public in October 1982. Thememorialis built in the style of the classic garden of the Tang Dynasty.

Sichuan has a longhistoryoffolkandclassical music.Sichuanoperais an ancient tradition that very is well-known. The Sichuanlantern dramais popular in Sichuan. The Sichuan Conservatory of Music inChengduis one of the oldest of musical education in China, having been established in 1939.

There is also religious music in Sichuan, played byTaoistpriestsin theirtemples.

Traditional Sichuanfolk musicis usually played with instruments such as the bamboo flute, pan and cymbals,gongandhorn.

Sichuan cuisine has an international reputation for being hot and numbing (Chinese:Cay rát), because of the common ingredient of theSichuan peppercorn(Chinese:Hoa tiêu).

Some well-known Sichuan dishes includeKung Pao chicken(Chinese:Gà Cung Bảo;pinyin:Gōng Bǎo Jī Dīng) andTwice Cooked Pork(Chinese:Hâm lại thịt;pinyin:Huí Guō Ròu).

Most dialects of theChinese languagespoken in Sichuan, including theChengdudialect,are similar to the dialects of neighbouring provincesYunnan,GuizhouandChongqing Municipality.
