Solarisis anoperating systemcreated bySun Microsystemsin 1992. It was created to run on theirworkstations(but it can be used on most modern PCs) and is still developed today. It used to be calledSunOSuntil it was renamed to Solaris in 1992. As of 2010, it is one of the main commercialUNIXvariants (The others areHP-UX,AIX,andz/OS). Solaris is ultimately based onUNIX System V.With version 10, released in 2009, most parts of it were madeOpen Source,and released asOpenSolaris.Solaris 10 runs onSPARCprocessors, as well as the 32-bit and 64-bitIntelandAMDprocessors.Oracle Corporationacquired Sun Microsystems in January 2010. Oracle continued developing Solaris, but it stopped developing OpenSolaris. OpenSolaris was later forked into theillumoskernel and theOpenIndianadistribution.
It is mostly used in advancedserverslike the ones that run theInternet,on someworkstations,and forprogrammingin languages likeJava,having advanced features for programmers.
