TheTranskei(meaningthe area beyond the river Kei), officially theRepublic of Transkeiwas aBantustan—an area for members of a specific ethnicity. It was in the southeastern region ofSouth Africa.Its capital wasUmtata^[1](renamedMthathain 2004). President of South AfricaNelson Mandelawas born here.
