Vivek Hallegere Murthy(born July 10, 1977) is an Americanphysicianand avice admiralin thePublic Health Service Commissioned Corps.Murthy is the 21st and currentSurgeon General of the United Statessince 2021 during theJoe Bidenpresidency. Before, he served as the 19th Surgeon General from 2014 through 2017 during theBarack Obamapresidency.[1]

Murthy, founder of nonprofitDoctors for Obama,replacedBoris Lushniak,who had been acting Surgeon General since 2013.[1]Murthy was the first Surgeon General ofIndiandescent and was the youngest active dutyflag officerin federaluniformed service.

On April 21, 2017, Murthy was relieved of his duties but will continue to serve as a member of the Commissioned Corps. Rear AdmiralSylvia Trent-Adamswas named acting Surgeon General.[2]

On November 9, 2020, thenPresident-elect of the United StatesJoe Bidenannounced that Murthy would co-chair hisCOVID-19 Advisory Board,alongside former U.S. Food and Drug Administration commissionerDavid A. Kesslerand Yale public health professorMarcella Nunez-Smith.[3]On December 3,Politicoreported that Murthy would return to the role of Surgeon General in the Biden administration.[4]His nomination was confirmed by theUnited States Senateon March 23, 2021 with a 57-43 vote.[5]
