Washington Dulles International Airport(IATA:IAD,ICAO:KIAD,FAALID:IAD) is a publicairportinDulles, Virginia.It is 26 miles (42 km) west ofWashington, D.C.[3]The airport serves theBaltimore-Washington DC-NorthernVirginiametropolitan areaand theDistrict of Columbia.It is named afterJohn Foster Dulles.He was theSecretary of StateunderDwight D. Eisenhower.The Dulles mainterminalis a well-knownlandmarkit wasdesignedbyEero Saarinen.The airport is run by theMetropolitan Washington Airports Authority.Dulles Airport covers anareaof 11,830 acres (47.9 km2).[4]It is on theborderofFairfax CountyandLoudoun County,Virginia.[1]

Dulles lies in twounincorporatedcommunities,ChantillyandDulles.It is west ofHerndonand southwest ofSterling.Washington Dulles Airport is the largest airport in theWashington metropolitan area.It is one of thenation's busiest airports. The airport has over 23 millionpassengersa year. Daily, more than 60,000 passengers leave Washington Dulles to more than 125destinationsaround theworld.[5][6]Dulles is the busiest airport in Virginia. It is also the busiest in the Baltimore Washington Metropolitan Area. It is accessible via theWashington Metro'sSilver line.

At the end ofWorld War II,growth inaviationand in the Washingtonmetropolitan areacausedCongressto pass the Washington Airport Act of 1950. This provided themoneyfor a second airport. The location was selected byPresidentDwight Eisenhowerin 1958.

Dulles has been used for many Washington basedmovies.This started soon after it opened with the 1964 movieSeven Days in May.The 1983comedyD.C. Cab,starringMr. T,Adam BaldwinandGary Buseyshowed scenes outside of the main terminal at Dulles Airport. Theaction movieDie Hard 2: Die Hardertakes place mainly at Dulles airport. Theplotof the movie deals with the takeover of the airport'stowerandcommunicationsystems byterrorists.The movie was not filmed at Dulles.Los Angeles International Airport(LAX) and the now-closedStapleton International AirportinDenverwere used. Part of thethrillerThe Package(starringGene HackmanandTommy Lee Jones) took place at Dulles. Again it was not filmed in Dulles.Chicago'sO'Hare International Airportwas used in its place.

The terminal can also be seen in the movieIn The Line of FirestarringClint Eastwood.
