Vpolitikise izrazlevicav glavnem uporablja za podporo boljegalitarnidružbi.[1][2]Ta običajno vključuje skrb za tiste v družbi, ki so prikrajšani napram drugim in predpostavljajo, da so neutemeljene neenakosti (ki jihpolitična desnicavidi kot naravne ali tradicionalne), ki jih je treba zmanjšati ali odpraviti.[3]Izrazalevicaindesnicasta nastala v časufrancoske revolucije,zato se nanašata na sedežni red vGeneralnih stanovih;tisti na levi strani so na splošno podpiraliradikalne spremembeiz revolucije, vključno z ustanovitvijorepublikeinsekularizacije.[4][5]Izraz se je kasneje uporabil za več revolucionarnih gibanj, še posebej zasocializem,anarhizem[6]inkomunizemkot tudi za boljreformistična gibanjakot stasocialna demokracijainsocialni liberalizem.[7][8]
