Solar Flares: Violent Sun

What are solar flares. How are they connected to the Sun, Geomagnetic storms, CME and more.

A very active Sun has been blasting increasing amounts of radiation at Earth virtually non-stop for months as it nears the Solar Maximum. And solar flares are very much on the agenda. So, what are solar flares, these dangerous solar phenomena, the result of a violent Sun?

What are solar flares?

NASA says that the magnetic field lines near sunspots often tangle, cross, and reorganize. This can cause a sudden explosion of energy called a solar flare.

Radiation blast at Earth
Solar flares release a lot of dangerous radiation into space. Thankfully, most of this is absorbed by the Earth’s magnetic field.

Solar flares impact
If a solar flare is extremely powerful, the radiation it blasts at Earth can spark an outage in radio communications here on Earth.

Solar flares and CME
Along with solar flares, the Sun also sparks coronal mass ejection (CME). They are referred to as massive bubbles of radiation and particles.

CME blast
CME explode into space at very high speed when the Sun’s magnetic field lines suddenly reorganize.

CME and auroras
CME charged particles can spark Geomagnetic storms on Earth, which then trigger auroras or Northern and Southern lights.

CME and Geomagnetic storms
A very strong CME can trigger a massive geomagnetic storm and this can spark outages in electricity grids across large regions.

Check the solar flares table below:

Solar flares: Highlights
Solar Flares Solar flares result from tangled magnetic field lines, causing sudden energy explosions.
Radiation Blast at Earth Solar flares emit hazardous radiation into space
Impact of Solar Flares Intense solar flares can disrupt radio communications
Solar Flares and CMEs Sun also emits CME, massive releases of radiation and particles into space
CME Blast CMEs are ejected at high speeds
CME and Auroras CMEs can cause geomagnetic storms on Earth, leading to phenomena like auroras
CME and Geomagnetic Storms CMEs can trigger geomagnetic storms that may disrupt electricity grids on Earth.
Solar Flares and CME Explosions Solar flares and CMEs represent the most powerful explosions within our solar system

Solar flares: Most powerful explosions
Solar flares and CMEs are the most powerful explosions in our solar system. Also, these can be informally referred to as solar storms.
