From Transformers Wiki

- Bruticus is aDecepticoncombinerfrom theGeneration 1 continuity family.
Bruticusis the combined form of theCombaticonteam. A terrifying sight on the battlefield, Bruticus is among the strongest of all Transformers. He can pulverize a suspension bridge with a single 14,000 psi punch. He can lift up to 500,000 pounds. His armor is impervious to most artillery and radiation.
He's also as dumb as a sack of hammers. But as far as Decepticon combiners go,mentalproblemsaren't terriblyuncommon. In fact,Megatronwishes that he had an army of Bruticuses, andOptimus Primeis thankful that he doesn't.

Bruticus became active for the first time during a battle betweenStarscream's rogue Decepticon brigade and Megatron's forces. AnticipatingMegatron's expected moves, he waited for his former leader to order theConstructiconsto merge intoDevastator.Starscream then unleashed his surprise—he similarly ordered the Combaticons to form the mighty Bruticus. Though extremely low in intelligence, even by the standards of combined robots, he was also extremely powerful, easily defeating Devastator and sending the remaining Decepticons loyal to Megatron into retreat. Unfortunately, theStunticonsarrived and formedMenasor, who launched an attack from behind, quickly subduing Bruticus.Starscream's Brigade
Starscream and the Combaticons were banished fromEarthon an asteroid, and the group quickly had a falling-out. After Starscream left, the Combaticons attackedCybertron, easily defeatingShockwaveand his drones. Thirsting for revenge, the Combaticons reprogrammed thespace bridgeto pull Earth closer to the Sun, in the hopes of destroying it and every Transformer there. The Autobots and Decepticons temporarily joined forces to retake Cybertron and prevent Earth's destruction, and with Starscream's help, they deactivated the Combaticons once they formed Bruticus through a failsafe device built into the treacherous giant's back.Optimus Primeand Megatron agreed that Bruticus must be destroyed, but the Decepticon leader fooled the Autobots by using Shockwave's holographic simulator to make it appear as though Bruticus was destroyed, when in reality the combiner was reprogrammed to be loyal only to Megatron. The Revenge of Bruticus
Soon afterwards, during Megatron's latest scheme on Earth involving the theft of fighter aircraft using Middle-Eastern criminals, the Combaticons were called into service to defend Megatron'sGiant Purple Griffin,a large... thing that apparently pumped oil. Or something. Struggling against theAerialbots, the Combaticons formed Bruticus, yet were still knocked over when the Autobot planes twisted a tow cable around his legs. The Decepticon combiner was finally defeated when the Aerialbots ignited the nearby oil wells, causing a massive explosion that sent Megatron,Rumbleand Bruticus flying away.Aerial Assault
Later, Bruticus was walking down the street, minding his own business (i.e. attacking a human city) when BAM! Bruticus was destroyed in battle withDefensor(man, this guy can't seem to catch a break). Only Swindle survived, and he sold the remains of his comrades to various mercenaries andthird-world dictator-types,only to be forced to locate and rebuild the Combaticons by Megatron. The reformed Bruticus was then defeated when Megatron'sorbit disruptor cannonwas overloaded by the human-builtB.O.T.,once again sending the Decepticon flying into the sky.B.O.T.
For some reason, in the year 2006 the Combaticons were idly hanging around as Bruticus during the Decepticon occupation ofParadron. He served as something of a comic foil forGalvatron, acting as straight-man while Galvatron delivered witticisms that were completely lost on the giant warrior. Also... that old line about "losing your head if you weren't attached to it"? Apparently, you can lose a foot even if it was attached, becauseBrawlwas manning a molecular cannon while Bruticus was in the control room with Galvatron. If you don't watch those feet, they just run right off on their own.Fight or Flee
During a Decepticon invasion of Japan, Bruticus was battling Defensor near a dojo. He enraged his opponent by negligently putting the humans in danger with their combat and, onceRodimus PrimeandSky Lynxarrived to back up Defensor, Bruticus split into the individual Combaticons and fled. The Burden Hardest to Bear

Scramble City
- Voice actor:Yū Shimaka(Japanese)
In 1986, the Autobots and their human allies worked diligently on their "Scramble City" project, a giant mobile fortress. Several Decepticons under the command of Starscream were dispatched to attack the secret construction site, but were defeated by the Aerialbots. Due to Starscream's failure to stop the Aerialbots, the Stunticons were quickly sent in, and soon in the battle formed Menasor. Menasor managed to corrupt Superion's formation by shooting one ofhis ownlimbs onto his opponent, rendering Superion vulnerable. However, he was soon stopped, and Superion regained his balance. Eventually, the Combaticons came in to help Menasor (though not willingly), forming Bruticus. The two tag-teamed against Superion, but were both stopped whenScramble City itselfwas brought into battle to end the conflict.Scramble City: Mobilization

Combination technology was something theDecepticon WarlordDeathsaurushad long tinkered with, since the days of his fortress inGygax.Although his early experiments were discontinued thanks to theAutobot Elite Guard,he remained interested in the idea, and eventually found the perfect means to implement it.Bruticus's profile in Club magazine #36
When the Combaticons were swayed to joining forces with Deathsaurus they received various upgrades. They demonstrated the most potent of these upgrades when they were surrounded by their former comrades in the Elite Guard and combined into Bruticus. The combiner then proceeded to crush their former commanding officer Sentinel Major with one mighty hand. This prompted the other Elite Guardsmen to attack in search of vengeance. The Coming Storm: Part 5
Tragically for the Guard, Bruticus proved to be virtually unstoppable and easily wiped out several of the Elite Guard teams beforeMetalhawk's Strike Team arrived. Despite the heroic efforts ofIronfistandOver-Run,Bruticus quickly slew them beforeDionmanaged to blind the mighty combiner and force him to separate. This forced the Combaticons to retreat, but not before killing Metalhawk as well. The Coming Storm: Part 6
The Combaticons underwent repairs at Deathsaurus's base, but shocked to learn that the repairs included a remote activation for their combination into Bruticus. Bruticus was formed when Onslaught needed to search through the mind of a brain-dead Swindle for damaging information onStarscream. After getting theEnigma of CombinationfromRattrap, the Combaticons merged into the gestalt but were unable to properly form a combined mind due to Swindle. The combiner almost mindlessly rampaged throughout Iacon, constantly muttering that everything must burn. Vortex reveled in the power that they wielded as Bruticus, Brawl was wallowing in pain after feeling Swindle's death, Blast Off struggled to keep them all together, and Onslaught dug through Swindle's memories. As Bruticus rampaged,Ironhideand his security forces were called in put him down, whileWindbladeandChromiatried to reason with Bruticus to coax out the information they had on Starscream. Bruticus promptly backhanded Windblade out of the sky and when he was about to blast Chromia, Ironhide shot a rocket at his head, blowing it to pieces and sending the Combaticons back to their components. The Line Between Us
Later, when theMistress of FlamewantedChromiareleased to Camien custody, she suggested Swindle orMenasorcould be handed over instead to face justice for their crimes. Wanting to keep Menasor and Bruticus on his side, Starscream opted to release Chromia.HeavyTo bring Bruticus under control, Starscream had theEukarianmnemosurgeonAirachnidtry to manipulate the Combaticons' minds so that Bruticus would be loyal only to him. Because the Combaticons minds had imprinted on each other during their combination, Airachnid found them more susceptible to the process, and thus had them believe that they had always been working for Starscream, using the inside man Blast Off to cover any holes in the story. As a result, the Combaticons came to believe that their forming of Bruticus had been a last-ditch attempt to save Swindle's life with Starscream's approval. The Price of You

Toys
The Transformers
- The TransformersBruticus is formed from all five Combaticon toys. The four smaller Combaticons attach via sockets in Onslaught's shoulders and the bottom of his feet. Fists and feet pads attach onto the four limbs, and Bruticus is completed with a large chest plate and a helmet covering Onslaught's head. He wields Onslaught'ssonic stun-gunin battle. The gun can also be stored on his backpack using two rectangular pegs which hold the gun in place via its targeting sight. As with allScramble City-stylecombinerteams, his limbs can be rearranged into any slot of one's choosing.
- The package art of Bruticus has the leg formed by Brawl face forward. Having him face backward like his in-show (look at the right picture) doesn't affect the stability of the gestalt.
- Along with Metroplex, Menasor, Defensor, and Superion, Bruticus was designed for an abortedDiaclonesubline that would have been calledJizai Gattai( tự tại hợp thể "Limitless Combination" ), which was shelved to make way for theTransformersline.
- In most markets, only the individual Combaticons were released, with thegiftsetonly made available in Japan and Italy. The Italian box layout was based very closely on the standard Hasbro combiner giftsets at that time, down to the inclusion of a Hasbro product code number; but unlike the otherGiGcombiner giftsets, "Multiforce" lacked the Hasbro logo on the front of the box, and the individual components sported Takara numbers from D-64 to D-68 before their names.
- The individual Combaticons were re-released in various European markets as part of the "Classics"line in 1991, and a Bruticus giftset was reissued byTakaraTomyin Japan in 2009.

- This version of Bruticus comes as a gift set, exclusivetoAmazonandBigBadToyStore.Packaged in aGeneration 2-styled box complete with hand-painted character art, it containsredecoesof all fiveGenerationsFall of CybertronCombaticonsin their Generation 1 doppelgangers'Generation 2colors, complete withGeneration 2Decepticon insignia. While Onslaught forms the torso, the remaining team members can serve as any of the four limbs, though the official configuration has Vortex as the left arm, Blast Off as the right arm, Brawl as the left leg, and Swindle as the right leg. The individual weapons the Combaticons have can be combined into a "Sonic Cannon" for Bruticus to wield via5 mm post.
- Like the original releases of the mold, this Bruticus also possessed some balance issues. This is mostly caused by having all of the Combaticons being Deluxes, Onslaught included. Although the 4 limb Combaticons can assume either an arm or foot position, certain members fare very poorly in certain modes, such as Brawl as an arm or Blast Off as a leg, which creates further balancing problems for Bruticus.
- Preorders for the set began onJuly 6of 2012 via Amazon (BigBadToyStore would not put up theirs until much later), and the final product was shipped out in early/mid-November. This may be considered a tie-in to Amazon's preorder bonus for theFall of Cybertrongame: a "Generation 2"-themed skin for Bruticus. This set was also available at normal retail in Australia.
Universe(2008)
- Bruticus Maximus(2008)
- Series:G1 Series
- UniverseBruticus, now named "Bruticus Maximus" (presumably fortrademarkreasons), is a redeco of theDestruction Team/Bruticus Maximuscombiner fromEnergon.WhileBrawlandVortexretain their previous modes of tank and helicopter respectively,Blast Offis now the combiner's second tank, andSwindlea sand-colored helicopter. As a redeco of anEnergoncombiner, Bruticus Maximus feature universal connection points for the limbs, allowing many different combinations and even swapping of limbs from differentEnergonCombiner teams.
- LikeSuperion,Bruticus Maximus, despite being initially intended as aUniverseTargetexclusive, was only released inUniversepackaging in some non-American markets such as Australia and Singapore. Instead, Target stores (and Zellers stores in Canada) received an unchanged version of the toy inRevenge of the Fallenpackaging, still namedBruticus Maximus, with all the individual components retaining their names as well.

United
- Bruticus Maximus(Multi-pack,November 7,2012)
- Released exclusively in Hasbro's Asian markets, this redeco of theEnergonBruticus Maximus set has colours similar to the previousUniverse/Revenge of the Fallenrelease, but with a much greater emphasis on G1-accuracy. Additionally, the hand/feet/weapons previously cast in translucent coloured plastic are now opaque grey.
- While unconfirmed, it seems likely that this release was conceived to satisfy then-high collector demand for the originalUniverseBruticus Maximus set, a result of the unofficial Explorer and Munitioner upgrade kits released for the figure by "third party"company FansProject. Of course, as unlicensed product, the kits were not acknowledged in any official marketing material for the re-released toy.
Kre-O
- Decepticon Bruticus(Micro-Changer Combiner, 2013)
- Set number:A2225
- Known designers:Ed Masiello(Hasbro)
- One of the firstKre-OMicro-Changercombiner sets, Bruticus includes fourKreons:Onslaught,Brawl,Vortex, andSwindle. These four component Kreons can be rebuilt into their alternate modes or taken apart and combined into Bruticus.
- Like all Micro Changer combiner sets, Bruticus comes with onlyoneKre-O display brick, and a sticker sheet composed of his leg, arm and right shoulder details and aKre-Ologo. Due to the limb stickers being slightly transparent, applying them into the black-colored leg parts could render the details being semi-transparent. The instructions also did not mention where you should put theKre-Ologo sticker. Also, Bruticus's combined mode's waist part is somehow prone to falling off from the assembly while posing, and he has a problem standing straight due to how the legs are constructed.
- Despite Blast Off's exclusion from the set, he was later released in the first wave of blind bag figures and, with enough creativity, can be combined into Bruticus.
- Combiner Robot Mega Pack(3-pack, 2016)
- Set number:???
- Pieces:245
- 3 years later, the 3 Micro-Changer combiners, Superion, Bruticus, and Menasor were reissued and released as a 3-pack. The toys were unchanged from their individual releases.
Combiner Wars
- Onslaught(Voyager Class,2016)
- Decepticon Blast Off(Deluxe Class, 2016)
- Decepticon Blast Off(Special Edition, 2018)
- Brawl(Deluxe Class, 2016)
- Swindle(Deluxe Class, 2016)
- Decepticon Vortex(Deluxe Class, 2016)
- Decepticon Shockwave(Legends Class, 2016)
- Known designers:Shogo Hasui(TakaraTomy)
- Combiner WarsBruticus is formed from all five Combaticon figures andShockwave.Designed in the "Scramble City" style, all four Deluxe Combaticons can each become either an arm or a leg, and come with double-barrelled guns that can transform into either a foot or a fist to complete the limb. The stock photography shows Blast Off and Vortex as arms and Swindle and Brawl as legs. Shockwave transforms into the combiner robot's handheld weapon, but his overall weight makes it largely impossible for him to be held by any combiner in a firing pose without falling over or pulling the arm down. Even worse, as Onslaught is retooled fromHot Spot,Bruticus retainsDefensor's forward-lean problem. Unlike Defensor however, the leaning problem can be resolved by turning Bruticus's thighs inward, forcing the pelvis armor to push against Onslaught's knees and correcting his posture, although this will force Bruticus into a strange A-legged stance.
- A promotional CGI render of the combined mode has Bruticus slightly mistransformed, having Blast Off's legs facing knees forward in his arm mode, which would leave Bruticus' left arm without a double elbow. Though difficult, it ispossibleto arrange Vortex's rotors in a shield-like position.
- LikeDefensorbefore him, all four limbs were released in the same wave, making it much easier to complete a set. He is also the first "classic" combiner in theCombiner Warsseries to not have a "replacement" member. However, Blast Off was relegated to a simple redeco ofQuickslinger, leaving him with a different alt-mode (a jet instead of a space shuttle) and an inaccurate head. In 2018 Hasbro released a redeco of the Unite Warriors version of Blast Off (see below) as a more accurate replacement.
- Bruticus(Collection Pack, 2016)
- Accessories:Weapons/combiner extremities, Onslaught's two guns, Blast Off's gun, Vortex's gun, Brawl's barrel rifle, Swindle's gun
- The whole
metamorphin' Dudicusbig, bad, battlin' Bruticus team was redecoed in theirGeneration 2colors (thoughOnslaught's black portions are now a super-dark brown), packed with a sorta-genericallyGeneration 2-esque, vaguely-Action Master-version-ish deco'd version ofShockwave. However, despite being (broadly) accurate in their base colors, all of the Combaticons have Generation 1 insignias, while Shockwave comes with the movie version of the Decepticon faction symbol.
- There is noGeneration 2-colored version of the Space Shuttle Blast Off toy, sorry. You only get the jet.
- Weirdly, thebacksof the antennae on Bruticus's head are painted silver, rather than the front where they'd be far more noticeable/make any amount of sense. On the other hand, the originalGeneration 2Bruticus had unpainted antennae, so hey.
- This version of the combiner was only sold as a complete team in a big box set, which also included a poster and a collector card based on the packaging art. This set was sold "exclusively" through multiple online outlets, though it eventually found its way to closeout retailers like TJ Maxx and Ross the following holiday season for well below its original price, alongside more or less all of the other "Collection Pack" semi-exclusives in the line.
Unite Warriors
- Known designers:Hisashi Yuki(TakaraTomy)
- The JapaneseUnite Warriorsrelease ofCombiner WarsBruticuscomes in a much more cartoon-accurate color scheme, with a recolored chest plate, and color matching hand/foot/gun pieces forSwindleandBrawl. He has a completely new mold in the form ofBlast Offas a space shuttle, rather than the recolored jet mold of his Hasbro release.Vortexalso includes the more cartoon-accurate four-bladed rotor blades as opposed to the two-bladed rotors his Hasbro version carried over from the Alpha Bravo mold. Shockwave is not included with this release, as theUnite Warriorsline does not utilize Legends Class molds, though you could pair Bruticus with the cycloptic scientist'sLegendsreleaseif you wish.
- The giftset included acollector coinwhen purchased from select retailers outside Japan.

Transformers Character Card
- Released as part of the tenth wave of thee-HOBBYexclusiveTransformers Character Cardseries, this pair of holographic trading cards depict super-deformed art of "Guardian"(with his componentsBlades,First Aid,Hot Spot,Groove, andStreetwise) and Bruticus (withhiscomponentsBlast Off,Vortex,Onslaught,SwindleandBrawl) along withcharacter profilesandtech specs.
Notes
- Much like the individual Combaticons who form him, Bruticus'scharacter modelhas a couple of oddities, due to the majority of it being based on unfinished, vague toy design sketches (at right) instead of actual toy references.
- Bruticus's chest plate is drawn to look like it is formed from parts ofBlast Off—mainly his wings, but the central portion of the chestplate is drawn to look like his shuttle cockpit hull, with the orientation of its details reversed. Certain detailed combination sequences, seen in "Aerial Assault,""The Revenge of Bruticus",and"B.O.T.",actually show Blast Off's wings disconnecting and moving into place as the chestplate, but these sequences also misinterpret some of Bruticus's details, and wind up depicting the two wheels at the base of the chestplate, which are supposed to be part of Onslaught's torso, as being connected to the plate and hence part of Blast Off.
- While Bruticus' toy has wheels on the back of its thighs, his cartoon model only depicts this detail on hisleftthigh, almost certainly a product of his rear-view character model being designed without the toy for reference, like multiple other season 2 characters—not that it matters much in practise, as the odd detail is almost consistently omitted from his actual in-show appearances.
- Bruticus has two head designs in the cartoon: the detailed one seen in his full-body character model, which features in most of his animated appearances, and a simplified, more angular one that appears consistently in "The Revenge of Bruticus"and"Fight or Flee,"and in select brief scenes of other episodes.
- The packaging of the 1991EuropeanClassicsrelease of the original Onslaught toy depicted Bruticus and the Combaticons in (mostly) new color schemes, despite the fact that the actual toys looked identical to their original releases. While it may never be known for certain, it has been theorized that these colors were the cause of an error with the hue settings of thestock photos, rather than a legitimate attempt toredecothe Combaticons.
- Several attributes ofAction Master EliteTurbo Master, including his face and chest plate, suggest that he was originally intended to be Bruticus. However, according toTransformers Generations Deluxe,at one point a non-transforming version of Action Master Bruticus was planned, which would have looked significantly different fromTurbo Master.
- For every version of the original Bruticus mold, the packaging art depicts the Brawl figure on backwards.
- Earth WarsBruticus's character model is a (more proportionate) recreation of hisCombiner Warstoy.
- Earth WarsBruticus's Earth Shatter ability is most likely a reference to hisFall of Cybertroncounterpart's shockwave ability, given how it affects a large area and do mass amounts of damage. The same could also be said about Shockfire Missiles, during his boss fight in the final few parts ofFall of Cybertron,in which the cannons on his back to deal damage to the player, though in this case you can actually do itwhileusing him.
