Despite Shockwave's absence, the Decepticons unleash yet another mysterious and coordinated attack.
Synopsis
As theAutobotscontend with a massiveDecepticonattack, the mostly healedUltra Magnusreturns to base, where he meets with CommanderOptimus Prime.Optimus decides to appoint Ultra Magnus as commander of the Autobot forces, as he leaves to meetHot RodimusandSARA.
Key locations throughoutMetropolisare hit by Decepticon forces—preplanning born from the formidable intellect of acting leaderShockwaveand intelligence fromSoundwave'sData Disc Unit,which had been scouting Metropolis and its weaknesses ever sinceMegatronstarted his uprising. Joining them in District 5 is the eager and bloodthirstyDeadlock,clamoring to take down as many 'bots as he can. He's in for a tough time, though, asIronhideconfronts him. In the meantime, the Autobots' spacetime travel facility is attacked by a certain troop: theCombaticons.Jazzisn't sure what to make of the five, who have been "modified" from their wild and obedient selves to loyal Decepticon soldiers. Optimus Prime arrives just right on time, boosting the Autobots' morale.
Inside the facility, Hot Rodimus and SARA return through aDimension Gatewith an unconscious Shockwave in tow; Rodimus isn't happy to hear that Shockwave has instigated yet another backup plan and rushes out to assist, leaving SARA in the other Autobots' care. Just as he exits the facility,Onslaught,leader of the Combaticons, decides to play their trump card that Shockwave also implanted in them: their combination into the giganticBruticus!Resolute, Optimus and Rodimus face off against the titan.
In the outskirts of the city,Astrotrainarrives at theCloud World's prison and sends out fellow DecepticonThundercracker,who has the "slaughter machine"Dinobotin tow. The Dinobot is sicced onto the Autobot guards, but comes face to face with the boastfulBrawn,although his thick hide can't stand up to the Dinobot's mighty jaws. While the big guns are distracted outside,Skywarpteleports inside, easily taking out the guards, and releases the prisoners.
Inside the spacetime facility,Perceptortries to call in reinforcements from across spacetime, but his attentions are caught elsewhere as Shockwave suddenly leaps to life. Signaling to his mighty creation outside, the logician has Bruticus punch his way inside the building to retrieve himself. Once outside, Shockwave reveals his original alternate mode... a beam cannon, now held by the combiner. Upon hearing his master's damaged voice, Bruticus fires upon the Autobots.
Deep inside the prison, the tightly boundStarscreamlistens to the commotion outside before seeing his cell's wall destroyed by Skywarp. Released from his bonds, the smug Starscream believes he's being rescued because the Decepticons need his power. However, once the two are aboard Astrotrain, the large Decepticon orders a retreat, and all Decepticons in the vicinity take their preset escape routes, including Thundercracker, who reactivates the Dinobot's leash.
Looking upon the destruction he wrought, Shockwave gets notice from Astrotrain that their objective has been accomplished and takes his leave. Hot Rodimus attempts to follow, but is held back by Bruticus. Optimus Prime seizes the opportunity and maneuverers around the giant, blinding him with blasts to his eyes. Rodimus, released, pulls out his sword, takes a leap, and vertically bisects the combiner! The dead Bruticus's halves crash to the ground and Rodimus shouts into the void as Shockwave is nowhere to be found. At the command center, Optimus Prime leads the Autobots in discussion about the Decepticons' current goals, wondering just what they need Starscream for. Perceptor, still damaged from Shockwave's attack, walks in to report that he's discovered Shockwave's target from the virus he inserted into the Autobots' systems. Shockwave's original destination for the Dimension Gate he was attempting to use leads to... nothing, just a void where only a flow of time exists. All of the Autobots are bemused by this revelation, except Optimus. He recalls SARA's words when she banished Megatron—the Decepticon leader was sent to a spacetime where nothing existed.
Shockwave's goal is to bring back Megatron.
