Synopsis

Though injured,Dukefights on, grabbing a gun and opening fire on theDreadnoksas they try to intimidate the guards protecting the armored car containing theBaronessandCrystal Ball.WhileBuzzerandTorchbegin cutting through the car, the other Dreadnoks keep Duke busy; Burn Out tries to run him down on an ATV, but a well-placed shot by the former Joe leader disables the vehicle.Zanzibarcomes swooping down on his hoverboard, catching Duke unawares, only to be taken by surprise himself by soccer playerFarooq "Spitfire" Shah, who lays him out. Shah introduces himself to Duke as a formerRoyal Air Forceairman, and quickly proves he's still got the skills when Duke hands him a gun, and he shoots out one of Buzzer's chainsaws. Duke and Spitfire face down the Dreadnoks together, and Duke realizes he's going to have to call for back-up...

AboardLemuria,Scarlettreceives Duke's call, and is less than impressed to learn what has happened. Duke requests aid in the form ofSnake Eyes,Agent Helix, andSkywarp, but the former two are in the brig, and Skywarp is believed to have perished on his last mission, so Scarlett has no choice but to round up the next best Joes, including members of the subterranean team who have just returned to base. Luckily, reports of Skywarp's demise prove greatly exaggerated: he picks up Scarlett and Duke's conversation on his comm, and comes blasting out of an erupting volcano in Norway, setting course for the Netherlands to join the fight!

While Duke and Spitfire do their best against the Dreadnoks, Torch and Buzzer finished cutting open the armored car, whereupon the Baroness comes striding out and takes charge of things without a second thought. With her strategic direction, the Dreadnoks are able to get the better of Duke and Spitfire, but before the Baroness can personally execute Duke, Scarlett's team comes storming onto the scene, weapons blazing. The Dreadnoks are thrown into disarray;Quick Kickdoesn't even have to throw a punch to scareRoad Pigand Crusher into fleeing—he simply tells them he just beat Snake Eyes! Unfortunately, a bigger threat soon emerges: summoned by Crystal Ball, the last two remaining "Fatal Fluffies" —progenitors of the other creatures, all now wiped out by the Joes' destruction of their hatchery—burst up from beneath the Earth. But luck is on the Joes' side: Skywarp chooses that minute to arrive, and to reveal thatRock 'n Rollhas also survived, thanks to the ex-Decepticonfinallyallowing him to ride inside his cockpit. Skywarp and Rock unleash a new combo maneuver they have concocted, the "Blast Beat," on the Fatal Fluffies, with Rock riding on robot-mode Skywarp's arm as he opens fire. In the chaos, the Dreadnoks scatter, forcing the Joes to choose between pursing them and stopping the Fluffies. Duke submits hismelf to Scarlett's command, Scarlett (reluctantly) makes stopping the Fluffies their top priority.RoadblockandSalvomanage to bring down one of the Fluffies by shooting its legs out from under it, allowing Skywarp to finish it off, while the other is dispatched by Quick Kick and Spitfire—the latter appropriates Zanzibar's hoverboard and carries Quick Kick into the air, where he drops down and delivers a precision sword-strike to the Fluffy's brain, killing it.

In the aftermath of the battle,Docreunites with Rock 'n Roll, and Scarlett promises Spitfire that the Joes will "be in touch." Duke feels like the escape of the Baroness and the other villains is his fault, a sentiment Scarlett doesn't hesitate to agree with... but vows that when the Baroness next appears, she'll bring her in.

Elsewhere, at an unknown location, construction on a desert temple by theCobranarchistsnears completion. There, several old faces have gathered together... for Cobra lives again... with the Baroness as their newCobra Commander!

Notes

Continuity notes

  • When Spitfire blasts one of the chainsaws on the ends of Buzzer's staff, Buzzer exclaims "Bloody hell! Again?!" referring to when Rock 'n Roll did the same thing to the weapon inissue #2.
  • Rock 'n Roll has been trying to get Skywarp to let him ride inside his cockpit in jet mode sinceissue #1.
  • Baroness inherits the title of Cobra Commander. This isn't a new concept for IDW continuity; unlike in classicJoemedia, where the Commander was one singular guy, IDW has always presented the "Commander" title as being transferrable, held by many people down multiple centuries, including theone based onthe original, thenKrake, and most recently, inRevolutionaries#5,Tomax.
  • Standing with Baroness on the final page areDestroandDoctor Mindbender. In terms ofG.I. Joecomics, this marks the first reappearance of these characters sinceSnake Eyes: Agent of Cobra#5andG.I. Joevol. 3 #17,respectively, but both men have been active in the widerHasbro Universesince then, both working withMiles Mayhem'sV.E.N.O.M.in separate instances in the pages ofM.A.S.K..At the time this story takes place, both Mindbender and Destro—along with Mayhem—are also in deep withBaron Ironblood'ssupervillain cabal,as detailed in the pages ofFirst Strike,a connection that leads into the events ofnext issue.
  • Also standing with the other Cobras is aDire Wraith. These aliens were revealed to be responsible for the Cobranarchist movement inissue #3,but they haven't been mentioned following the events of that story. Looks like they are still indeed tied in with Cobra, and not just using its symbols to lure in and entrap human victims, as seemed might be the case originally.

G.I. Joe references

  • The Baroness wears the cloth cowl used by the original Cobra Commander in classicG.I. Joemedia, based on his 1984 action figure. This is the first time a Commander has worn this mask in IDW continuity, with past holders of the title having favored mouth-covering bandannas, or blank masks akin to the chromed faceplate of the original Commander's 1983 figure.
  • Doctor Mindbender is wearing his traditionalJoegarb (what little of it there is), which makes its IDW continuity debut with this issue.

Other trivia

  • This is the final regular issue ofG.I. Joevol. 5. The series is scheduled to be replaced withScarlett's Strike Forcein December 2017 with Sitterson still writing and continuing the ongoing story.
  • Originally solicited for release in August, this issue continues IDW's ongoing series of delays, arriving significantly late in mid-October, a month-and-a-half after the originally delayed previous issue. The issue was supposed to be released before theG.I. Joe: First Strikeone-shot, but delays meant that that issue came out first, spoiling... uh, virtuallyeverythingfrom this story, including Skywarp and Rock 'n Roll's survival, Spitfire joining G.I. Joe, and Baroness becoming the new Cobra Commander.
  • In place of the two Fatal Fluffy "progenitors", the original,Inhumanoids-centric outline for the series called for a final confrontation withMetlar, the traditional Inhumanoid leader.
