Ironhideis a bot of many toys, all of which are tough customers.
Toys
The Transformers
- Accessories:"Static Laser Gun", gun post, 3 missiles
- Known designers:Kōjin Ōno(TakaraTomy)
- Ironhide was part of the original assortment ofTransformersAutobotcars released in 1984, transforming into a red Nissan Sunny-Vanette Coach SGL. Ironhide splits when he transforms, with most of the rear section of his van mode transforming into abattle platform, and the remainder becoming his rather unusually-shaped, mecha-like robot form. The robot can mount onto the battle platform, which is armed with a raising missile launcher and front-mounted "Static Laser Gun". Unusually for toys of this period, the Static Laser Gun can actually store when Ironhide is in vehicle mode, plugging into his undercarriage (although the missiles for his launcher and the peg required to attach the laser don't go anywhere).
- As with all his fellow Autobot Cars from that year, Ironhide's mold derived fromTakara'sDiacloneline, a series which wasnotabout sentient robots, but rather human-controlled machines. This mold is the one that most clearly shows evidence of this: in place of a head, these toy robots had chairs behind windscreens where the human rider would control the robot. The figures did includestickersto go over these seats that depicted a sort of robot face, but when Ironhide and Ratchet'scharacter modelswere created forTransformersmedia, all traces of the human-controlled design were removed to give the robots proper faces and heads, ultimately creating the two designs which diverged the most from the toys on which they were ostensibly based.
- The stripe on the side of his vehicle mode (a sticker on the toy) is actually based on a special edition of the Nissan Cherry Vanette. On the real vehicle, the rear section (which is black on the toy's sticker) is actually the sliding rear door rail.[1]
- For unknown reasons, Ironhide was the only Autobot Car not released by Takara as part of theiroriginal retail linein any form (while Ratchet was not available at retail, he was available as aS.T.A.R.S.mail away item). Ironhide was reissued several times; this article lists each reissue separately where appropriate.
- This mold was also used to make the concurrently-releasedRatchet.

- Ironhide(Classic Heroes,1990)
- Accessories:"Static Laser Gun", gun post, 3 missiles
- The original Ironhide toy was first reissued in 1990 alongside several other early Transformers as part of the European-exclusiveClassicsrange. He was functionally identical to his original release.
Generation 2
- Ironhide(Go-Bot,1995)
- Accessories:Gun
- Known designers:Masakatsu Saito(concept artist)
- Part of the third wave ofGeneration 2Go-Bots(which focused on Generation 1 characters), Ironhide is aredecoof wave 1'sMotormouth,transforming into a silver Ford F150 Flareside pickup truck. Using through-axle construction for his wheels, he is compatible with most "Hot Wheels"and" Matchbox "play sets and tracks.
- This mold was later redecoed into theRobots in DisguiseSpychangerIronhide, theUniverseAutobotIronhide, and the secondUniverseincarnation ofHoist.
- The toy was laterrepurposedto be a"next-generation" clone of Ironhide.

- Ironhide(Power Master, 1995)
- Accessories:2 guns
- Power MasterIronhide transforms into a khaki camouflaged-and-armored Humvee. His main gimmick is his "Power Master" pull-back motor, which you use by pulling back on his motorized rear wheels, then placing one of his guns into one of the holes above the doors, which releases a catch and allows him to zip along a smooth surface.
- The Power Masters were the last toys in theGeneration 2line, and were only released in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Oddly, the Australia and New Zealand releases were in US packaging, complete withHasbro's Rhode Island address. They also conspicuously lack any mention ofTakarain their stamped-oncopyrightinformation.
- Packaging mockups of Ironhide, labeled with the names "Pothole","Belzone "and" Light Speed ", showed him with a bright yellow and blue color scheme and a pink face.
Beast Wars
- Magnaboss(Ultra Class three-pack,1997)
- Accessories:2 guns
- Known designers:Takio Ejima(TakaraTomy),Masakatsu Saito(concept artist)
The elephant Ironhide toy represents both the original Autobot and alatter-day Maximal.
- Beast WarsIronhide transforms from an elephant via a rather complex process involving numerous hinges and unfolding panels into a rather stumpy robot. Although dumpy, he is nothing if not well-armed: he has a flip-out spike at the end of each arm, and comes with two removable guns that flip out from behind his elephant mode ears, and which can be plugged into the holes at the ends of his arms. Ironhide is packaged withProwlandSilverbolt, and combines with them to form hisMagnaboss.Ironhide forms the bulk of the combiner's mass, including all four limbs.
- The Magnaboss toy included no information about its three components beyond their names. In 2007,IDW Publishingdecided to retroactively establish that the trio were theGeneration 1characters of the same names, and included this revelation in theirBeast Wars Sourcebook.
- Ironhide was slightly redecoed to createSanton.
Collector's Edition
- Ironhide was made available in Japan for the first time as part of theCollector's Editionline of reissues, available exclusively from online retailere-HOBBYin a two-pack with mold-mate Ratchet. As the first Japanese edition of Ironhide, this was the first time the toy had been given aJapanese ID number. As with his packmate, this version of the mold is the first to use metal pins for the shoulder connection rather than screws (something that all future reissues of this mold would adopt). This release also adds a rubsign onto the vehicle mode rear window.

Timelines
- Descent into Evil(Multi-figure boxset, 2005)
- Accessories:Radar assembly/energon weapon, battle sled
- TimelinesIronhide is aretoolingandredecoofEnergonTow-Line,transforming from a van into a robot and separate treadedbattle sled, each featuringpowerlinxports that allow them to combine with any other compatible Deluxe or Mega from theEnergontoyline. Ironhide himself forms the "torso" in such a combination (armed with small guns that flip out from his feet to become over-shoulder blasters), while his battle sled becomes the "legs" for another robot. And of course, Ironhide can powerlinx with his own battle sled.
- He was only available in theBotCon 2005exclusiveDescent into Evilboxset, which also includesBuzzclaw,Chromia,Deathsaurus,Dirge,Fallback, andRicochet.
- Ironhide's retooled mold was also used to makeTimelinesRatchet;they shared a new head mold, which combined elements of both of their designs, including Ironhide's head crest and Ratchet's forehead chevron.
Encore
- Ironhide(2007)
- ID number:05
- Accessories:"Static Laser Gun", gun post, 3 missiles
- Ironhide's original Generation 1 toy was made available again in mid-December 2007 as part of Takara's ongoingEncoreline ofreissues. This version was distinguished by the inclusion of a "head" of sorts for the figure: one of the toy's box flaps featured an illustration of Ironhide's cartoon-design head and chest windshield which could be punched out along its perforated edges, and then slotted behind the toy's windshield. This hid the "chair-face" of the original toy and gave Ironhide his cartoon face... at the cost of making his arms appear to grow out of his waist.
- This version of the toy wasretooledto add a pair of "clips" to themobile platform's gun-base, designed to keep Ironhide more securely attached when riding it. However, these clips are right where a pair of decals normally go. Additionally, like the original Japanese release of the figure (butunlike Hasbro's version), the missile launcher now fires.

Version 1 (Ironhide):

- Ironhide Protect Black(2008)
- ID number:05
- Accessories:"Static Laser Gun", gun post, 3 missiles
- Tied in to Ironhide'sEncorereissue was e-HOBBY'sexclusive"New Year Special"redecoof the figure: Ironhide Protect Black (アイアンハイドプロテクトブラック). The toy was priced at 4725 yen, and pre-orders were taken untilJanuary 11,2008, with a shipping date of April 2008.
- The newbioaccompanying the release of the toy notes that Ironhide acquired this protective black coating to disguise himself from both Decepticons and members of thehumancriminal underworld, to better allow him to do his job as Optimus Prime's bodyguard. The bio also gives a name to the "mode" that consists of Ironhide standing atop his artillery platform, dubbing it his "Marauder Mode".
- According to e-HOBBY,the black coloration is meant tohomagethe originalDiaclonetoy which became Ironhide, but between the release of Ratchet Emergency Green and the bio's reference to black pickup trucks, it's easy to see this is also an homage tolive-action movie Ironhide. The packaging is the same as the regularEncoreIronhide's.
Universe(2008)
- Ironhide(Deluxe Class, 2008)
- Series:Classic Series
- Accessories:"Converting Cannon" gun/blade
- Known designers:Bill Rawley(Hasbro)
- As the first new-mold Ironhide toy designed to resemble the original character,UniverseIronhide transforms into a red SUV of made-up model. His chest features anAutomorph-like gimmick that sees mechanical detailing rise up behind his chestplate when his bumper is lowered. He is armed with a double-ended "Converting Cannon" weapon, which deploys a translucent melee blade from one end, and a gatling cannon from the other. Although the instructions indicate that Ironhide's weapon should be attached by flipping his hand to the side of his wrist (as in transformation) and fitting the weapon over the naked wrist, the handcanin fact be made to fit inside the weapon with some careful jiggling.
- Hisstock photography(seenhere) shows him with a silver face and hubcaps, but as the final product shows, that didn't happen. While Hasbro claimed there would be arunning changethat would have the face in silver, no such change occurred. Speaking of packaging, Ironhide was also the first newUniversefigure to havepackage artthat wasn't burdened withdull surprise.
- As a nod to theMarvelGeneration 1 comics, Ironhide's license plate reads "OREGON" —the place that theArkcrash-landed and the bulk of the first half of the comic takes place.
- The figure has a couple of production flaws. Due to a combination of three places on the figure having too much plastic, Ironhide's head assembly does not have the clearance to rise up fully, and it ends up looking like he's hanging his head in shame. However, with some heavy tinkering, the head can be raised to a more level, straight position[1].The paint on the car roof has also been reported to rub off over time, and can have a sticky feel to it.
- This mold was retooled to makeUniverseRatchetandHenkei!Ratchet(surprising absolutely no one), plusBotCon 2012'sSir Soundwave. This toy also served as the model for theShattered Glassincarnationof Ironhide.

Henkei! Henkei!
- Ironhide(Deluxe Class, 2008-11-20)
- ID number:C-11
- Accessories:Converting Cannon
- Henkei! Henkei!TransformersIronhide is a redeco ofUniverseIronhide, with a view to making him far more accurate to hisoriginalThe Transformerscartoonappearance. To this end, a generally darker shade of red plastic and lighter gray plastic are used. Additionally, the blue paint used for his opaque windows is a better match to his transparent blue windows than on Hasbro'sUniversetoy. As with allHenkeitoys, Ironhide featuresvacuum-metallizedsilver for his headlights, brake lights and his Converting Cannon housing.
- Although the instructions indicate that Ironhide's weapon should be attached by flipping his hand to the side of his wrist (as in transformation) and fitting the weapon over the naked wrist, the hand can in fact be made to fit inside the weapon with some careful jiggling.
- Same as the Universe version, or on Henkei Prowl, this mold too suffers from the paint on the car roof turning sticky even on room temperatures and coming off.

Combiner Wars
- Ironhide(Deluxe Class, 2015)
- Accessories:Axe, "super-cooled nitrogen/white-hot molten lead" dual cannon/hand/foot/engine
- Part of the fourth wave ofGenerationsCombiner WarsDeluxe Class toys, Ironhide is a redeco/new-head retool ofDecepticon Offroad, which transforms from a 4x4 double-cab pickup truck which is reminiscent of hislive-action movie counterpartto robot and back! As aCombiner WarsDeluxe figure he can form a combined-mode limb for any Voyager Class toys from the same subline or anyUnite Warriorsfigure or into one ofLegendsGodbomber's legs but is, of course, intended to be combined with Sunstreaker, Mirage, Prowl, and Optimus Prime to createOptimus Maximus. He is also officially associated withBetatronandMagnaboss.A sticker sheet was sold atBotCon 2016to enhance Ironhide's resemblance to the originalBeast Warsfigure.
- He includes a5mm handleaxe weapon, and a larger accessory that can form a hand or foot in limb mode, a gun for robot mode, and can be mounted on a tab in the vehicle mode's truck bed to form a giant engine block. In an unadvertised feature, the peg on his engine weapon is the right size to mount aMini-Conon.
- While the front hood/windshields are needed to be folded as kneecaps for his leg mode, the piece also sticks out automatically if he collides to Optimus Prime/Motormaster's (or and of Hot Spot's redecoes/retools) protruding foot while the legs are being swiveled in his standing position, unless the leg joints are bent down to lessen the problem.
- Hilariously, the robot modestock photodepicting a hand-paintedprototypethat's featured on the back of the toy's packaging is missing the wheel on his right leg.
- Ironhide is packed with the comic book "First Contact",rebranded asCombiner Wars#15. In Canada, Latin America, and Europe, he was available in different types ofmultilingual packagingincluding a character card featuring his comic book cover/package artinstead. He and the last three waves of Combiner Wars Deluxe and Voyager figures later started showing up at TJ Maxx at reduced prices with the collector card.
- As a part of the third and fourth wave promotion in Hasbro's Asian markets, a free sticker sheet for theProtectobotsandOptimus Maximuswas given out when purchasing any four Deluxe Class toys from those waves. As such, Ironhide was given Generation 1 toy-esque stickers for the owner to apply if they wanted.[2]
- The original sculpt was redecoed asGrabuge, heavily retooled asFirst Aidand differently retooled asTrailbreaker.

Masterpiece
- Ironhide(2016-01-30)
- ID number:MP-27
- Accessories:2 Laser pistols, Static Laser Gun, missile launcher, missile, 2 alternate hands, 4 nozzles, wristsonodar, chest screen, jetpack, 2 flare effects, battle sled, 2 faces
- Known designers:Hironori Kobayashi(TakaraTomy)
- MasterpieceIronhide transforms into a licensed Cherry Vanette. He is in the standard Masterpiecescale(sinceMP-9), standing between MP-10Convoyand MP-12Lamborin bot mode and can fit insideConvoy's trailerin vehicle mode.
- He comes with accessories that reference many of the gadgets he used in theGeneration 1 cartoon.Ironhide'scharacter modeldid not include any weapons or other extra tools or devices, meaning there was little to no consistency in the depiction of his armament in the series; as such, the toy picks and chooses from the many weapons and accoutrements he was seen using. He includes a pair of generic Autobot laser pistols of the same design as the gun that came withMasterpieceBumblebee (which Ironhide began using in "Megatron's Master Plan, Part 1") which can be stored on the underside of his vehicle mode, a larger gun based on his original toy's Static Laser Gun (similar weapons having been seen in"City of Steel"and"A Prime Problem"), a set of alternate hands representing his ability to spray liquids through his fingertips (done in multiple episodes), a set of nozzles that can be exchanged for his hands based on those seen in"Desertion of the Dinobots, Part 1",a second set of nozzles based not on anything from the cartoon, but on theconnector pegfor his Static Laser Gun from his original toy, the back-mounded missile launcher from "More than Meets the Eye, Part 3"based on his original toy's launcher, his wrist-mounted sonodar sensor dish from"S.O.S. Dinobots",complimented by a readout image of dinosaur bones that can be slipped behind his windshield, and the jetpack seen in"The Immobilizer",complete with jet-flare effects. A peg hole on the roof of his vehicle mode can hold one of the laser pistols or the Static Laser Gun.
- In a nod to decal face from the original G1 toy (which replaced theDiaclonepilot), Masterpiece Ironhide has a sculpted face which looks out through the windshield when in van mode.
- Unlike the original G1 toy, which in transformation from van mode split into robot and separate sled base, all of Masterpiece Ironhide’s alt mode parts are incorporated into his robot mode. His sled is an entirely separate, non-transforming slab, which unlike the G1 version has no tank tracks. It has ports for all of his accesories (except the card readout of dinosaur bones). An alternative face can be stored on the sled’s underside.
- There have been multiple reports that the first release of the mold's chrome parts suffer from early corrosion, similar to the issues encountered with the initial MP-5Megatron.
- If purchased from a seller supplied by Hasbro Asia, Ironhide includes a collector coin, mounted in a card which resembles the front of his van mode. It may have also included adie-castdrill accessory, based on the one he used in "More than Meets the Eye, Part 3".The drill accessory came in a small case styled to resemble a tool case.[3]
- Ironhide was retooled intoMasterpieceRatchetandMPGDK-2 Guard.

War for Cybertron: Siege
- Ironhide(Deluxe Class,2019)
- Hasbro ID number:WFC-S21
- TakaraTomy ID number:SG-17
- TakaraTomy release date:April 27,2019
- Hidden message code:TRITHYLLIUM
- Accessories:"W-35 LR Doomblast Forge Launcher"
- Known designers:AJ Piejko-Brown(packaging)
- Part of the second wave ofSiegeDeluxe Class figures, Ironhide transforms from robot to Cybertronian van and back. In keeping with theWar For Cybertrontrilogy's concerns with scale, Ironhide is a full head taller than most of his Deluxe-priced mates. He includes a gigantic missile launcher cannon called the "W-35 LR Doomblast Forge Launcher," compatible with theC.O.M.B.A.T. System, that can also convert into an equally gigantic hammer. As with all non-gimmickSiegefigures, Ironhide features "battle damage" paint applications on his lower shins, feet, and weapon. He also features multiple hardpoints all over himself and his weapons to accommodate "Fire Blasts" from theBattle Mastersassortment, which can be used to simulate blaster fire or explosions.
- Ironhide suffers from a production flaw that causes the molded hinges on his legs to be too small to properly house the side panels from his vehicle mode, causing them to pop off at the slightest pressure. This can be resolved by removing the panels and using a small screwdriver to carefully widen the pegholes, which creates enough clearance to properly house the panels within the hinges.
- Ironhide was redecoed intoDeseeus Army Droneand retooled to varying degrees asCrosshairs,RatchetandAnimated Universe Autotrooper. The mold was also extensively retooled intoEarthriseIronhide (below).

War for Cybertron: Earthrise
- Autobot Alliance 2-Pack(Multi-pack,2020)
- Hasbro ID number:WFC-E31
- TakaraTomy ID number:ER EX-18
- TakaraTomy release date:February 20,2021
- Accessories:Pistol, Roof/Shield
- Known designers:John Warden(Hasbro)
- Released in the "Autobot Alliance" 2-Pack withProwlin theEarthrisetoyline, Ironhide is an extensive retooling of hisSiegecounterpart, transforming into a van similar to his original Nissan mode. He features a new chest/windshield, bumper, lower arms, and leg panels, as well as a roof piece that converts into a shield in robot mode. While similar to the Siege version's head, the toy's head is also new, remolded to have less detailing and to be more cartoon accurate. In lieu of the Doomblast Forge Launcher (which this figure can wield if you wish), the shield can also become a giant four-barreled cannon. For a little extra firepower, Ironhide also comes with a smaller pistol. Conveniently, this gun can be stored on the underside of the shield, tucking away neatly in van mode.
- Although the figure features molded windows in van mode, said windows lack any paint, tampographs, or decals for color, which causes inconsistencies when combined with the translucent plastic from the roof to complete them. Similar to theSiegeiteration, the figure's robot mode feet stick out conspicuously from the van mode's backside. Lastly, Ironhide's red color is visibly inconsistent throughout the combined figure, with some parts appearing more pink than red against the darker red pieces.
- The Drill Gun seen in "More than Meets the Eye, Part 3"is sold separately as part of theWar for Cybertron TrilogyDeluxe Centurion Drone Weaponizer Pack.Buzzworthy Bumblebee/ War for Cybertron Trilogy"Worlds Collide"BumblebeeincludesEarthriseCliffjumper's bazooka redecoed in green, matching Ironhide's bazooka in "Transport to Oblivion",effectively adding another weapon to this Ironhide toy's arsenal.
- The map piece that comes with Ironhide and Prowl is the mysteriousNebulonStation.
- This pack was exclusive toAmazonin the United States, Canada and Europe. Unfortunately, the demand of the characters, combined with low stock and the COVID-19 pandemic complicating shipping issues, caused the 2-pack to command high prices online. That being said, Ironhide did get a mass-retail release with a more accurate mold inStudio Series(below), so... happy ending?
- Ironhide was redecoed intoGenerations SelectsDK-2 Guard.

- Redone at the Voyager Class price point,Studio SeriesIronhide is an attempt to improve the faults of theEarthriseversion (while also being a general retail item instead of anAmazonexclusive). Though he is a similar size to that previous toy, the advanced transformation engineering means he doesn't have feet sticking out of the back of the vehicle mode and requires nopartsforming, although it does suffer from the same varying shades of the red problem as the earlier release.
- Oddly, his signature stripe on the sides of his vehicle mode is present as molded detail, though unpainted. Unpainted translucent blue tabs also stick out the top of the vehicle mode roof, meant to secure a lightbar for the later Ratchet retool.
- Ironhide comes with dual laser pistols, which can be stored on his back, on the back of his legs, on top of his van mode, or under it as exhaust pipes.
- Just like his previousSiegeandEarthrisecounterparts, Ironhide's Drill Gun seen in "More than Meets the Eye, Part 3"(which was sold separately as part of theWar for Cybertron TrilogyDeluxe Centurion Drone Weaponizer Pack); as well asBuzzworthy Bumblebee/ War for Cybertron Trilogy"Worlds Collide"Bumblebee's green bazooka (which was reminiscent of Ironhide's bazooka in "Transport to Oblivion") can both be used with this figure, even though these weapons cannot accommodate with Ironhide's vehicle mode.
- Ironhide also includes a display backdrop depicting the scene from the '86 movie where he made his last stand against invading Decepticons aboard the Autobot Shuttle.
- Obviously, this figure was retooled intoAutobot Ratchet.
- Ironhide(Core Class,2023)
- Movie:The Transformers: The Movie
- TakaraTomy ID number:SS-110
- Accessories:2 blasters
- Known designers:Evan Brooks(Hasbro),Mario Carreiro,Christina MurphyandAmy Bence(packaging),[5]Marcelo Matere(packaging artist)
- Part of the sixth wave ofStudio SeriesCore Class figures, Ironhide is the obligatory retool ofRatchetwith a new head, van roof, and crotch. He transforms from a robot to a van in 15 steps and comes with two blasters which can either be held or stored on the sides of his vehicle mode. There is also ample space to store the guns inside the rear of the van.
- Despite the Core Class lacking the backdrops included with all otherStudio Seriessize classes, the outside and insert of Ironhide's packaging is decorated with the artwork of the "Decepticon Shuttle Ambush" backdrop.
- While handling the vehicle mode, be careful not to press down the upper and lower rear panels; doing so would likely disconnect its tabbing.
- This figure was officially revealed onFebruary 21ston a Transformers Tuesday, alongsideSnarl.
Buzzworthy Bumblebee
- Ironhide / Prowl(multi-pack,2023)
- Series:Studio Series
- Movie:The Transformers: The Movie
- ID number:86-24BB
- Accessories:2 blasters, 2 large 3-part Fire Blast effects, "Decepticon Shuttle Ambush" backdrop
- Known designers:Evan Brooks(Hasbro),Yūya Ōnishi(TakaraTomy)[6],Mario Carreiro,Christina MurphyandAmy Bence(packaging),[7]Marcelo Matere(backdrop artist)
- A redeco and partial retool of the aboveStudio SeriesIronhide figure,Buzzworthy BumblebeeIronhide is a morbidly hilarious version of the character during his death in the 1986 movie. In addition to a new, distressed headsculpt, his chest has been retooled to include some pretty nasty battle damage, including a 5mm port for blast effects.
- Notably, this version of Ironhide includes the yellow stripe on his van mode that the above standardStudio Seriesfigure lacks. This figure also does away with all the painted translucent plastic featured on the previous figure, instead using a uniform red throughout, resulting in better color matching across both modes.
- He was available in a 2-pack with a similarly morbidProwlretool, along with two purple recolors ofSiegeJetfire'sFire Blast effects.According toHasbrodesignerEvan Brooks,he initially pitched this set as a joke that essentially got way out of hand.[6]
- Like the rest of theBuzzworthy Bumblebeeline, this figure was exclusive toTargetin the United States, withHasbro Pulsereceiving small quantities of the pack.
