Kolkular

As the capitol of thecity-stateKaon,Kolkularis whereDecepticon commandis located. Via the many monitors and other equipment in theCradle,the fortress's command hub and throne room, contact is maintained with the outside world. Kolkular has artificially been lifted up far above the Kaon landscape to keep it out of reach of attacks and other harmful events, extendable elevators allowing the inhabitants to enter and leave.

At the Cradle,Megatrondiscussed the beginning of the war withSoundwaveandStarscreamwhile monitoring his troops's activities. As his leader took a few cheap swipes at the lateEmirateXeon,whose head adorned his throne, Starscream grew annoyed and demanded that he pay attention to theAutobots' evacuation plan. Megatron assured theSeekerthe Autobots wouldn't get away and sent him,SkywarpandThundercrackeron a mission toProtihex.In the company of Soundwave, Megatron took the elevator down to the surface to obtain a status report on theplanetary engines.The War Within #2

Later, believing he had killed Megatron, Starscream happily took over command. From the Cradle, he informedShockwaveover atIaconthat there had been a shift in the hierarchy, but Shockwave was not impressed and vowed to look into the matter when he returned. Unimpressed himself with Shockwave's words, Starscream ordered his soldiers to extract every scrap of data from their captive,Laserbeak,in order to understand Megatron's plans to reshape Cybertron. As soon as he had it figured out, he left for the controls of the planetary engines to initiate the mechaforming procedure.The War Within #4

Megatronwas seated on his throne in Kolkular as he used Laserbeak to spy onOrion Pax's hunt forHot Rod.RuinsAfter saving Orion Pax, Megatron brought him and his unit there to form an alliance with them to fightZeta Prime.Choices

Following Megatron's first major defeat, he was exiled from Cybertron byScorponok,who then gathered the Decepticon army at Kolkular and declared himself to be their new leader.WreckageHe then used Kolkular's central command center to plan his first move: an attack on theToraxxis mega-refinery.Faces of DarknessOnce Megatron returned to Cybertron, he summoned Scorponok to his throne room in Kolkular where he beat the life out of the usurper.The Illusion of Control

Situated inKaon,Kolkular wasMegatron's seat of power in the time prior to theGreat Exodus.AfterShockwavebrought theDark SparkandCliffjumperto Kolkular,Optimus PrimeandJazzsnuck into the fortress to rescue their friend only to wind up trapped in the prison cells. Anticipating this, Optimus hadPerceptoraimTrypticon's laser at Kolkular, destroying the prison and allowing the three Autobots to break free. After sending Jazz and Cliffjumper back to Autobot territory, Optimus went to confront Megatron, managing to use theMatrix of Leadershipto banish the Dark Spark from Cybertron.Rise of the Dark Spark

Kolkular is one of two distinguishable cities molded into the surface ofPrimus's planet mode, designed specifically to match its appearance inDreamwave'sThe War Withincomics and DK'sTransformers: The Ultimate Guide.In Primus'srobot mode,Kolkular ends up on the underside of Primus's heel, which is probably symbolic.

The other city is the Autobot city-stateIacon,which, similar to the depiction on the Cybertron map in theUltimate Guide,is placed on the opposite end of the toy from Kolkular. Its placement, however, is likely a coincidence.

• Kolkular was first mentioned inSimon Furman's non-canonstory "Alignment".After being driven off Cybertron, the Decepticons had made another planet their New Cybertron, where they had a complete" superbly detailed recreation "of Kolkular built. Kolkular is described as" a colossal fortress that spanned an entire continent and was clearly visible from outer space ". It is home to theGrand Forum,"a vast open hall protected by a fiery energy dome", where theDecepticon High Councilholds its meetings. An atrium lies next to it where "sculptures depicting former Decepticon leaders" stand. Interestingly, this sounds like a description of theHall of Heroes,but any connection to it or theDecepticon strongholdis speculation. Kolkular wasmade officialin adapted form a few years later in the pages ofDreamwave's comics.
• The drill-elevator used to get down from Kolkular looks similar in design to the docking tower the Decepticons used to get in and out of theirunderwater basein theoriginal cartoon—only, of course, upside down.
