A lie means that when Chief Burns and Chase become trapped in an underground mine, the Bots and Burns siblings have to search for them.

Synopsis

"Face it, Mrs. Neederlander. Your cat just doesn't like you."

As heavy rain comes down,Chief Burnstries to retrieveMister Pettypawsfrom the statue ofHorace Burnsin the town square.Mrs. Neederlanderdemands to know where theRescue Botsare, but they're busy dealing with an overflow by sandbagging a section of street. That done,KadechallengesGrahamto a race to the square. UnfortunatelyHeatwave's arrival at the square coincides with Mister Pettypaws deciding to vacate the statue in favor of the road. Heatwave swerves and ends up on a collision course withBoulderinstead. The two Bots narrowly miss each other, taking out the statue and a fire hydrant.

After the cleanup, Graham almost gives away the fact that they haven't forgotten Dad'sbirthday—the kids have a surprise party planned. Chief Burns announces he's heading to the river to check everything's OK there. He andChaseinstead head to the bakery and pick up a cake. Chase is perturbed by Chief's lying about where they were going, but Chief describes it as a white lie, as he doesn't want to make the kids feel bad about forgetting his birthday. Chase still isn't happy about it, but they're interrupted by a call fromCodyto see if they're going to be back soon. The call is cut off as Chief and Chase drive near the lead mine. When Chief hears a banging noise in the mine office, the pair stop to check it out. Though it turns out to just be a window, the floor suddenly collapses, dropping Chase and the Chief into the mine. Unable to make outgoing calls, they head further in to find another way out.

Back at base, the rest of the team are confused by their inability to contact Chief or Chase. They head down to the river, where Cody checks the security camera footage with theComTab,only to find that there's no sign of anyone on the recording. They start searching.

"Zoinks!"

Trudging through the mine, Chase brings up the whole lying thing again, and Chief points out that Chase also lies when he pretends to be a robot in front of the townspeople. They reach an area with a control panel. While the Chief fishes a lantern out of a mine cart, Chase activates a switch to try and turn the lights on. Unfortunately this sends Burns's mine-cart careening down the track towards a hole, and Chase has to execute a last-minute rescue. They continue their search through the mine, and as Chief observes it's getting late, Chase offers his front seat. As the Chief drifts off to sleep, water begins spreading around Chase's wheels.

The next morning, the team returns to base without having found any sign of Chase or the Chief. They decide to ask around the island, but before they can do so, they get a call fromMr. Feifferat the bakery to ask how they enjoyed the cake. Putting two and two together, the kids realize that it's partly their fault for making Chief think they forgot his birthday. They check the map and pinpoint the lead mine as the likely place for Chase and the Chief to be. At the mine, they find the hole in the floor and start searching around outside.

Chase wakes the Chief to alert him to the rising water, and they continue on with Chief riding inside the Rescue Bot. They eventually reach a hole leading to a cavern near the mine entrance, which Chief climbs though. Chase attempts to widen the hole so he can follow, but this causes a cave-in that traps him. A falling rock also strikes the Chief, injuring his arm.

Cody returns to the office and spots Chase's footprints at the bottom of the hole, so Boulder checks with his sonar and detects movement. Boulder, Blades, Dani and Graham head into the hole to search and encounter a large quantity of bats. They eventually find Chase who explains the Chief's predicament. Meanwhile, Cody, Kade and Heatwave find the other entrance to the mine and break it open. Inside they spot Chief floating in the steadily-rising water of the cavern and Kade goes down to try and fish him out. The attempts of the other Rescue Bots to break through cause a sudden whirlpool that sucks Chief under. As the water drains from the cavern, Boulder emerges from the hole with Dani, Graham and the Chief, safe and sound.

Later, the family sits down to a birthday dinner, and everyone pretends to enjoy the cake Dani made.

• We'd be surprised if the Chief's mine-cart ride wasn't at least partly inspired byIndiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

Animation and technical errors

• The two barriers Dani is putting out to block traffic are completely different designs.

Trivia

• Chief Burns is able to egress from Chase while the latter is still in robot mode, all via his vehicle mode windshield folding open like a door. Until now, Rescue Bots have always been shown to transform to vehicle mode to let passengers out. Blades also pulls the same trick to shelter Graham and Dani.
• Considering Graham and Dani are almost shoulder deep in water when they reach Chase, shouldn't they have jumped inside one of the bots earlier?
• We're not sure landing on Chase's metal hand would be any better for Chief Burns than landing on the ground.
