The Energon Trap

High above theAtlantic Ocean,Thunderwingtrails a submarine with a dangerous cargo: Plutonium rods. Two hours later, the sub is surrounded byDecepticonMicromasters.Shockwavethen contacts thehumancrew and demands the cargo to be surrendered. While outwardly accepting his terms, the crew also contacts theUnited Nations'Autobotliaison, asking for help.

Several Autobot units including theMicromaster headquartersandRocket Baseare mobilized immediately atArkand loaded onto a presumably very large container ship. The ship departs asGoldbugthinks about the fortunate circumstance that the Autobots are supplied by the humans, while the Decepticons have to waste their energy scrounging for those supplies.

During the passage to the mission site,Optimus Primeradios in to tell the Autobots how important it is not to give in to Decepticon demands even once and to show no weakness.Vroomsuggests to pretend to give in to their demands in order to surprise them with an attack, then cuts the feed to avoid being detected by the Cons.

Shortly thereafter, the Autobots spot theMicromaster Space Shuttle, which is serving as a mobile command post for a legion of airborne Decepticons, leadingScoopto believe that this is only the first of a series of planned attacks and suggests to uproot those plans. Surprisingly, however, the Decepticons break formation to encircle a freighter onto which the submarine's cargo is being transferred.

TheAerialbotstransport severalPretendersandPowermastersonto that ship only for them to be greeted by Decepticon fire. Goldbug spotsBomb-burstattempting to keel-get the ship as suddenly, the battle somehow gets more intense, lasers and signal flares are everywhere, and everyone tries to get out of the line of fire.

Optimus Prime says to no-one in particular that it is fortunate the freighter happened to come by, enabling the humans to start transferring the cargo to confuse the Decepticons. Furthermore it somehow keeps the Decepticons from using planet-killingsuper blastersbecause the risk of a giant explosion that would make large swaths of the planet uninhabitable is now too big.

Backstreetoverhears those words and orders the Micromaster Rocket Base to begin ceasefire negotiations with the Decepticons, then turns around and orders theTriggerbotsand Micromasters in his crew to charge up their freeze- and disintegrator rays to blast the Decepticon aircrafts out of the sky. They do so, forcing the Micromaster Space Shuttle (and thus, all the present Decepticons) into surrender.(source)

Notes

  • The cover is astonishinglyneonorange, to an extent that cannot be captured by human technology.
  • The title to the comic is translated as "The Fire-Dance on Mount Verona".
  • The comic doesn't print the finale to this story, "Vicious Circle!"(as a matter of fact, Condorneverprintedanymaterial from the Marvel UK Annuals.) It finishes on a cliffhanger, and the next issue goes straight into "Ladies' Night".
  • The text story was also published, with altered names of characters and locations, in issue 3 of theM.A.S.K.Comic-Sonderheft,published by Interpart, one of Condor's alternate identities/imprints. That version of the story was credited to Michael Rubin, another recurring name among Condor/Interpart's stable of writers (or possibly a pseudonym of Robert Mann). For example, instead of Thunderwing, there it isSly Raxinside hisPiranhavehicle who tracks the submarine.
  • The text story informs us that theMicromaster Combiner Anti-Aircraft Basecan swim, apparently.
  • The Autobots have some sort of deal with the humans to refineenergon.
  • The Micromaster Combiner Headquarters can carryActionMasterBlastervehicleson its back, which is probably the only time anyone anywhere outside a catalog used the term.
  • Bumblebee is described as having been transformed to Goldbug.
  • The Decepticons are casually said to be in possession ofSuper Blasterswhich are "insidious planet killers".
  • Backstreet has the authority to order the commencement of ceasefire negotiations with the Decepticons. He also has the authority to then get his fellow Autobots to gun down the Decepticons once negotiations are offered. Wait, what? That's not very Autobot-like!
