Junkions are a race of transforming mechanoids that inhabit the planetoid also known as Junkion. Depending on the universe, their historical origin may be unclear, but in some they are indeed descended from Cybertronians.[1]
They have a unique physiology, seemingly made of little more than the same rusted scraps of trash metal that compose their homeworld. They are capable of not only withstanding damage that would normally incapacitate or kill the average Transformer, but quickly repairing that damage using any pieces of scrap metal they can get their hands on. A Junkion may even be reduced to a pile of parts, only to come back at their enemy less than a minute later. Junkions in battle are utterly fearless, using tag-team and ambush tactics to keep mobile while swarming their opponents en masse.
They are also expert mechanics, even able to repair with remarkable ease Transformers normal medical science would write off as dead. How the Junkions have developed in this manner has yet to be explained.
Junkion culture is centered on one thing: Earth broadcasting. Their speech is a hodgepodge of television and radio clippings, making them oftentimes hard to understand. Junkions as a whole are somewhat childlike and naive. They are curious, but also tend to be wary of, if not outright hostile towards, newcomers to their planet (far too many have come with the goal of harming their world), but once a Junkion's friendship is gained, they go "coo-coo for Cocoa Puffs" and treat their allies as Friends For Life. As such, they are instinctively protective of humans, the source of television.
After having come in contact with the Autobots, the Junkions have become known as some of the best scrap metal merchants and traders around. Even some Decepticons make use of their services. The Junkions are all too happy to exchange energon for more scrap metal... even if they don't think to ask just where the scrap metal came from.

When a group of Autobots crashlanded on their planet, the Junkions saw them as nothing but intruding thieves. Without warning, Wreck-Gar and his Junkions led an assault on them, but they soon halted when another group of Autobots arrived and proved their friendliness with the universal greeting. Pacified, the Junkions revived the late Ultra Magnus and promptly organized a dance party for everyone.
When Hot Rod voiced his desire to destroy Unicron, the Junkions did not hesitate to join him, and a large number of them boarded the Minnow with which to attack the dark god. The Minnow was crushed in Unicron's hand in the following battle, but luckily the passengers survived (at the very least, Wreck-Gar and Perceptor did). The Transformers: The Movie

The Big Broadcast of 2006
In a strange alternate future, the defensive Junkions chased off a number of Sharkticons that had landed on their planet in search of a Quintesson journal. In response, the Quintessons hijacked the Junkions' precious television signals, planting subliminal messages that caused the Junkions to consider all other races to be their enemies and meticulously organize the junk on their planet in hopes the lost journal would be discovered. The Junkions got the bright idea to share these transmissions, beaming them out in the galaxy and causing sentient races everywhere to fight each other. The brainwashed Junkions were eventually fixed when Blaster countered the transmissions with soothing easy-listening music. Once the hypnosis was broken, the Junkions sided with the Autobots in driving off the attacking Decepticons. The Big Broadcast of 2006 (US)

Following the destruction of Unicron, his still living head floated into range of the planet Junk, and using his vast mental powers he took control of the entire Junkion population. Planning to use Junk as his new body, Unicron ordered the Junkions to attach his head to the planet. His plot failed when Wreck-Gar, who had been off in space at the time Unicron took control, planted explosives beneath his head and blew him up. The Legacy of Unicron!

The Junkions did not take kindly to the Recyclons intending to recycle their planet into energon. After Salvage damaged Wreck-Gar, the Junkions swarmed the intruders and forced them to retreat into space. Down but not out, the Recyclons decided to fire the Prime Processing Unit to recycle the entire planet from orbit, but the Junkions fired a tractor beam in return, sending their ship crashing violently into Junk. Salvage was the sole survivor of the crash, his last sight alive being a group of Junkions moving in on him. Collect and Save

The planet Junkion began as a Cybertronian garbage disposal area in space where junk was dumped by means of space bridge technology. From whatever reason more Cybertronians, Autobots and Decepticons alike, were dumped through the space bridge, More Than Meets The Eye space bridge entry with the Junkions eventually emerging as a new breed of Transformer. Runnin' with the Devil Though not hostile by nature, the fact their home planet was paradise to numerous treasure hunters and thrill seekers that couldn't care less how the Junkions would suffer from their presence, the Junkions had adopted a mildly xenophobic disposition. Sometime in 2003, Junkion leader Wreck-Gar was flying the Junkions' main ship alone through space when he stumbled upon the remains of Decepticon leader Megatron. Revelation He brought him on board and repaired him, though Megatron was not the least bit grateful. First, he harshly demanded to know what Wreck-Gar was and when that was answered, Megatron proceeded to manipulate Wreck-Gar into getting him a start back to power. The two returned to Junkion, where Wreck-Gar collected discarded Air Warrior bodies and repaired them, believing Megatron needed an army to vanquish evil from the universe. When he was done, Megatron killed (?) him, because Wreck-Gar was too unpredictable an ally. Runnin' with the Devil
2005 IDW continuity
According to the historian Pentius, the Junkions were the remains of a rich and prosperous race who had arrogantly believed their resources would last them forever. When their veritable paradise of a planet finally ran out of energon, these early Junkions were forced to sell off their wealth to other races in a desperate attempt at survival, but it was a futile struggle. As their civilization slowly fell into ruins and their planet was reduced to a hellish junkyard, the survivors deteriorated into a race of scavengers and cannibals living among the garbage. Fallout
The Junkions became a kind of bogeyman to Cybertronians, who believed them to be monstrous scrap-eating zombies from the mythical death-world of Junkion. When Megatron was banished to Junkion by Scorponok, however, he found that the threat was very real. Derelicts He viciously destroyed the group of cannibalistic Junkions who attacked him, suffering some damage in the process. Wreckage Tales of Megatron's power spread throughout the Junkion clans, and when the Decepticon leader later returned and demanded their loyalty, they were quick to bow before him. Joining forces with the Decepticons, the Junkions provided them with a ship with which to return to Cybertron. Primacy #2 On arrival in Iacon, the Junkions participated in the Decepticon assault on the city, swarming over and outnumbering the Autobot defenders. Primacy #3
Soon after, Shockwave led a Decepticon force to the Junkions in the hope of recruiting them and Prowl led the Autobots to stop it. The Battle of Junkion ended with one of them detonating the planet's core so it would knock out the others. In the aftermath, the Junkions were left nomadic, a bit weird, and developing strange new ways of keeping themselves pieced together. A Lonely Pillar on the Plain
Some four million years later, Galvatron recruited several Junkions into the army he was raising to oppose D-Void. Heart of Darkness #3 Some other Junkions were among the neutral Transformers who returned to Cybertron after the war was over. In 2017, a crew of Junkions under Wreck-Gar and Rum-Maj arrived on Earth to trade technology for Ultra-Energon. They were bemused to find Optimus Prime on Earth claiming he spoke for it and such trade couldn't be allowed and the natives hostile to them and Prime both. A formal meeting was held at Autobot City and the Junkions offered a positron core as something to trade, allowing the Autobots to repair innumerous wounded people. A Lonely Pillar on the Plain
Suspicious of the Junkions, the Autobots had Cosmos infiltrate their ship, Behind My Bleeding Back only for him to be subdued by the Sharkticons. In retaliation for this, Rum-Maj launched the Junkion invasion of Earth. Dance Among the Shadows After the positron core had been destroyed however, Optimus Prime managed to bargain for peace with the Junkions and established the city of Little Cybertron for them to live in peace. Feel Safe Without Regrets
Some Junkions later got jobs at an Ore-13 mine in Kentucky where one of the workers expressed surprise at how much the humans were being paid while Rum-Maj dismayed that they were now at the mercy of the Autobots and humans. Surfeit of Primes
When Unicron began its apocalyptic attack on the Cybertronian colonies, Rum-Maj found recent events to be creating very disturbing historical parallels and rallied the Sharkticons to make another attempt at conquering Earth. When the army arrived at Mount Rushmore however, Jazz managed to have everyone stand down before Unicron then appeared over Earth. Time Will Rust In the battle against the Chaos Bringer, the Junkions defended the White House, unleashing the Sharkticons on the Maximals who'd survived Bludgeon's Worldsweeper crashing into the building. Aligned novels
Early on in the space bridge colonization project, Cybertronian colonists used the world of Junkion as a collective dumping ground for the vast amounts of refuse that inevitably resulted from the push outwards. This same planetoid was later used as a hideout for Cybertronian criminals, pirates, and outlaws. Many of them created new identities for themselves and began new lives working on the planet. The space bridge project eventually failed, leaving Junkion isolated from the rest of the universe. With no new resources available, the inhabitants turned to scavenging to survive. As they created new bots from the junk around them, the few former Cybertronians gradually forgot about their origins and took on the name "Junkions". At the time of Optimus Prime's search for the AllSpark, their leader was the eccentric Wreck-Gar.
The Junkions were initially skeptical of Optimus Prime's quest, but eventually aided him and his Autobots by directing them to the nearest working space bridge. However, the Decepticons, who had been following the Ark, landed on the planet and launched an attack on both the Autobots and Junkions. During the course of the battle, the Requiem Blaster, the center of Junkion, was removed, causing the planet to break apart. The fracas was further compounded by the arrival of the Star Seekers, who took the Junkions hostage and, despite Wreck-Gar's protests, forced them to weld a space bridge to the hull of the Tidal Wave. The Star Seekers and Junkions disappeared to places unknown. Exiles
The Nemesis eventually crossed paths with the Star Seekers who'd forced Wreck-Gar to emit a phoney Autobot distress call. Though the Star Seekers tried to destroy the Nemesis, it proved a superior warship to the Tidal Wave, despite the pirates' possession of the Requiem Blaster. As the wounded pirate ship ejected the Blaster and retreated, Wreck-Gar used the chaos to steal an escape pod and space bridge away. Retribution
Shattered Glass
The Junkions were the minions of Wreck-Gar, an experimental junk robot with the ability to remake other Transformers in his image using snake-like creatures. They spoke in the manner of computer error messages. After the spread of the Junkion "Hive" proved a threat to both factions, they were locked away on the prison planet Paradron.
Eventually, they were freed by the Autobot renegade Ultra Magnus, who recruited them as footsoldiers for his incursion into the dimension Primax 207.0 Epsilon. There, they fought both Decepticons native from their own Universe, and local Autobots. Distant Fissures Numerous Autobots from that universe were assimilated into the Hive, and as Magnus's plan came to fruition, transporting the alternate Earth back to their own, negative-polarity universe and destroying 207.0 Epsilon in its wake, the Junkions retreated from battle. Toys
The Transformers
- Wreck-Gar (Hero, 1986)
- Takara ID number: C-81
- Accessories: "Decelerator laser" gun, "Armor Axe", tire/shield
- The only Junkion toy originally produced was the group's leader, Wreck-Gar, sold as part of the two-bot "Heroes" assortment in the third year of the Hasbro line. This toy is noteworthy for being one of the earliest uses of ball-and-socket joints in the entire franchise. Unfortunately, he completely lacks his cartoon model's sweet facial "hair". Also unfortunately, a robot-mode Wreck-Gar toy cannot properly ride a motorcycle-mode Wreck-Gar, unlike the action depicted in the movie. Sigh.
Collector's Edition
- Detritus (Junkion, 2004)
- ID number: 77
- Accessories: Rifle, 12.7mm machinegun, missile launcher, 3 missiles, spare tire, spare tank
- Detritus is an e-HOBBY exclusive redeco of the original Hound toy, transforming into a Mitsubishi J59 off-road vehicle. He came with an entirely new decal sheet to make him fit the Junkion aesthetic better, which also includes both Autobot and Decepticon faction sigils to match his neutral nature from his e-HOBBY bio.
Transformers (2010)
- Wreck-Gar (Deluxe, 2011)
- Accessories: "4-bladed battle axe"/tailpipe
- Part of the sixth and final wave of Hasbro's 2010 Transformers toyline under the "Reveal the Shield" branding, this version of Wreck-Gar transforms into a junker off-road motorcycle. Double pegs under his pelvis correspond to double pegholes in his vehicle mode seat, meaning if you get more than one, he can totally ride himself, or anyone else made from this mold. Finally!
- Unfortunately, despite looking awesome, Wreck-Gar has a distressingly fiddly transformation and a slew of design flaws. While the full details can be found on his page, even Hasbro has implemented some of the fixes found by fans for future uses of his mold.
United
- Wreck-Gar (Deluxe, 2011)
- ID number: UN-18
- Accessories: "Battle axe"/tailpipe
- Part of the third wave of TakaraTomy's United line, Wreck-Gar is a redeco of the Hasbro "Reveal the Shield" Wreck-Gar toy, this time extensively painted with a more original-cartoon-inspired deco. Like most toys in the line, some of his parts are painted with a metallic sheen; in Wreck-Gar's case, it's his red chest and legs.
- Autobot SET (3-pack, 2011)
- Scrapheap
- This e-Hobby exclusive three-pack includes Scrapheap, a retool of the "Reveal the Shield"/United Wreck-Gar with a new head inspired by the background Junkions from the movie.[2]
- This pack also comes with a clear-blue Hot Rod and a battle-damaged Kup.
- ID number: EX 03
- Accessories: Junker Drone, Trasher Drone, Waster Drone, Scrapper Drone
- Part of the second wave of United EX toys, "Roadmaster" (the new code name for Detritus) is a redeco of the Power Core Combiners Mudslinger toy, transforming into a monster truck of indeterminate model. He also has a "Prime Mode" where he becomes the torso of a super robot, capable of using any auto-transforming Power Core Combiner drone-machine molds for limbs.
- He comes with four color-coordinated "wasteland" vehicle drone-limbs, redecoes of the Destructicons. Each one has a square socket for a Power Core Combiner connection; when attached via the blue plugs on a Commander figure, the vehicles automatically transform into a super-robot limb, and snaps back to vehicle mode when disconnected. Despite the universal connector, each drone can only form one limb type (but can be swapped from left to right):
- Junker Drone — Leg (Roadmaster's left)
- Trasher Drone — Leg (Roadmaster's right)
- Waster Drone — Arm (Roadmaster's left)
- Scrapper Drone — Arm (Roadmaster's right)
Generations
- Junkheap (Deluxe Class, 2011)
- Accessories: Tailpipe/axe
- Part of the ninth and final wave of Generations Deluxes in 2011, Junkheap is a retool of "Reveal the Shield" Wreck-Gar with a different new head. This is also the first use of the mold that features many attempts to improve upon the design flaws found in previous iterations.
Timelines
- Wreck-Gar / Scrap Iron / Junkheap (Convention multipack, 2012)
- Available at BotCon 2012 in an at-convention-only three, pack, Shattered Glass Wreck-Gar, Scrap Iron and Junkheap are redecoes of the "Reveal the Shield" Junkion mold, this time in Insecticon colors to reflect the twisted nature of the universe.
- This is also the first release of a Junkheap using the right eye insert, as the original Junkheap used Scrapheap's eyepiece instead of his own.
Combiner Wars
- Wreck-Gar (Legends Class, 2016)
- The only new item in the sixth and final wave of Generations Combiner Wars Legends-class toys, Wreck-Gar is a retooling of Groove, sporting a brand new noggin. He transforms into a motorcycle of made-up model.
- He can also convert into chest armor for Defensor and other iterations of the Combiner Wars Hot Spot mold.
Platinum Edition
- Planet of Junk Clash (Platinum Edition Deluxe 3-pack, 2016)
- Part of Hasbro's Platinum Edition offerings for 2016 intended to commemorate the 30th anniversary of The Transformers: The Movie, this three-pack includes new-deco versions of the "Reveal the Shield" mold Wreck-Gar and Scrapheap, as well as a new-deco version of Autobot Hot Rod. Wreck-Gar and Scrapheap have near-identical decoes, with their yellow and bronze paints vice-versa-ing between the two.
- This set was intended as a Target exclusive in the US, but was effectively an online-only item.
Power of the Primes
- Wreck-Gar (Deluxe Class, 2018)
- TakaraTomy ID number: PP-41
- Accessories: Axe/tailpipe, Prime Armor/combiner hand, Prime Master gap filler/gun
- Power of the Primes Wreck-Gar is a retool of Unite Warriors Groove, transforming into a motorcycle of indeterminate model. Wreck-Gar can also change into a limb for any Combiner Wars-style combiner.
- He was first discovered in a listing in Walgreens' internal systems during the course of Titans Return as a Walgreens exclusive. Wreck-Gar was exclusive to Walgreens in the U.S. but found at EB Games in Canada and general retail in Hasbro's Asian markets.
Studio Series
- Wreck-Gar (Voyager Class, 2021)
- Hasbro ID number: 86-09
- Accessories: 2 wheel shields, four-bladed axe, "Junkion Dance Party" backdrop
- Released to commemorate the 35th anniversary of The Transformers: The Movie, Studio Series Wreck-Gar is a Voyager Class-sized mold accurate to his appearance in the Generation 1 cartoon, right down to his laser nipples.
- He comes with his two spiky shields, which can attach to his arm or leg in robot mode or form his wheels when converting to his motorcycle mode. Wreck-Gar also comes with his four-bladed axe, which can either be stored on his back or held in his hand. Much like the 2010 Reveal the Shield release, one figure of Wreck-Gar can ride another in their alternate mode.
- Like the other Studio Series toys, the interior of the package forms a display background for the toy. In this case, is it a dance party taking place on Junkion.
- Junkheap (Voyager Class, 2022)
- Released to commemorate the 35th anniversary of The Transformers: The Movie, Studio Series "Junkheap" is a heavy retool of Voyager Class Wreck-Gar, replacing the head, upper chest, and lower arms from the original release. Sadly, no nipples. It's worth mentioning that the retooled arm piece (included to compromise between animation models) adds a rotatable wheel guard piece, thus giving Junkheap's bike mode a more complete-looking footrest than Wreck-Gar's.
- Junkheap comes with the same two spiky shields as Wreck-Gar, which can attach to ports on his forearms or the sides of his knees in robot mode or form his wheels when in motorcycle mode. Junkheap also comes with Wreck-Gar's four-bladed axe, which can either be stored on his back or held in his hand. Much like the above Generations release, one Junkheap can ride another Junkheap/Wreck-Gar's alternate mode, although the riding figure is somewhat out of scale compared to the motorcycle-mode figure, which is more suited towards Deluxe-scale figures such as Studio Series Hot Rod. While his wheels are capable of spinning, the studs on them mean that they are more likely to scrape if pushed along a hard surface so care should be taken to avoid scratching the figure.
- Junkheap's arm shields are based on the unfinalized model drawn by Floro Dery, which appeared in season 3 of the Generation 1 cartoon. The rest of him appears to be a mix between the finalized Toei model and the unfinalized Dery model.
- Unfortunately, due to trademark reasons, the character has again been released as "Junkheap".
- Like all other Studio Series toys, the interior of the package forms a display backdrop.
- Junkion Scrapheap (Voyager Class, 2024)
- Movie: The Transformers: The Movie
- Hasbro ID number: 86-24
- Accessories: Front wheel shield (wide), back wheel shield (thin), blaster, "Junkion Dance Party" backdrop
- Known designers: Evan Brooks (Hasbro), Takashi Kunihiro (TakaraTomy)[3]
- Released in the twenty-third wave of Studio Series Voyager Class figures, "Junkion Scrapheap" is another heavy retool of Studio Series '86 Wreck-Gar, transforming into a movie-accurate motorcycle. He has a new chest, head, shoulders, forearms, lower legs, and hands. Rather than including a four-bladed axe like his mold-mates Wreck-Gar and Junkheap, Scrapheap comes with a blaster as his weapon, based on the early Floro Dery character model (see below for more). Much like Junkheap, Scrapheap appears to be an amalgamation of his finalized Toei model and the unfinalized Dery model.
- In an unusual oversight for the line, Scrapheap uses the same 86-24 designation given to Buzzworthy Bumblebee Studio Series Ironhide. Scrapheap's Hasbro stock photos also show him with a much darker face, which is not present on the final figure.
- Scrapheap, alongside the first wave of 2024 Studio Series product, was officially revealed at MCM London 2023, though he was spotted at a local store first.
Legacy
- Junkions were released in the subline imprint Legacy: Evolution, representing 4 new characters and one familiar one. Their Evo-Fusion function is analogous to the Weaponizer gimmick from the War for Cybertron Trilogy toylines; their bodies split apart to form armor and weapon enhancements for their allies. In addition, the Junkions are also advertised swapping parts with each other in vehicle mode. Unlike previous figures of this nature however, the Junkion Weaponizers do not transform via partsforming.
- TakaraTomy ID number: TL-30
- Accessories: Tow-arm, tow hook, left & right exhaust pipes, wheel shield, 2 engine-blower "dual phaser blasters"
- Part of the first wave of Deluxes in Legacy: Evolution, Scraphook transforms into a junky, post-apocalyptic tow truck. His limbs are removable and are connected via 5 mm ports at the knees and shoulders.
- Crashbar (Deluxe Class, 2023)
- TakaraTomy ID number: TL-39
- Accessories: left & right saddlebags/gravity cannons, left & right exhaust pipes/clubs, back tire/sawblade
- Part of the second wave of Deluxes in Legacy: Evolution, Crashbar transforms into a junky, post-apocalyptic motorcycle. His lower limbs are removable and are connected via 5 mm ports at the knees.
- Axlegrease (Deluxe Class, 2023)
- TakaraTomy ID number: TL-45
- Accessories: left & right engine block halves/blasters, left & right exhaust pipes, left & right thrusters, hook
- Part of the third wave of Deluxes in Legacy: Evolution, Axlegrease is a retool of Scraphook and transforms into a junky, post-apocalyptic muscle car. Her limbs are removable and are connected via 5 mm ports at the knees and shoulders.
- Detritus (Deluxe Class, 2023)
- TakaraTomy ID number: TL-54
- Accessories: Rocket launcher, rocket, pistol
- Part of the seventh wave of Deluxes in Legacy: Evolution, Detritus is a heavy retool of Siege Hound and transforms into an unlicensed and somewhat grungy jeep. He notably lacks the Weaponizer parts removal gimmick, being a Hound retool as is tradition for this character. He wears insignias from both factions, reflecting his mercenary status.
- Trashmaster (Voyager Class, 2023)
- TakaraTomy ID number: TL-56
- Accessories: Claw
- Also part of the seventh wave of Legacy: Evolution, Trashmaster transforms into a post-apocalyptic garbage truck. He includes a large shovel claw weapon, which can be held in robot mode, and serves as an opening trash loading hopper in truck mode. Trashmaster is the first Voyager Class figure to utilize the Weaponizer format. However, compared to the Deluxe scale Junkions from the same line, Trashmaster has the fewest number of parts that can be detached, leaving a massive chunk of torso.
Notes
- According to a secret file on Autobots, the Junkions are a "tribe of Autobots that dwells on the planet Junkion", ostensibly cementing their place as Transformers.
- In G.I. Joe vs. the Transformers II #3, the Dreadnoks, a Cobra biker gang, are shown to ride motorcycles that look just like the Junkions. The Dreadnoks claim to have found their new bikes in a junkyard at some point. No indication is given that the bikes are living Transformers, leaving it simply an Easter egg for the reader.
- The Junkions that appeared in the movie and their ship were given names in the Transformers: The Complete Ark book, which was released 23 years after the movie.
- At some point after 2009, a "movie" version of a generic Junkion warrior was conceived for a post-Revenge of The Fallen video game (unrelated to the Dark of the Moon franchise) in anticipation that Luxoflux would continue the live-action game series. Unfortunately Luxoflux was disbanded in 2010 by their parent company Activision and said plans never came to fruition. High Moon Studios (which is also a subsidiary of Activision) took on the role instead, leading the development of a third game in an entirely different direction.
