The large town square in the middle of Mérida was built in the 16th century. However, some of the stones used in its construction were sourced from a mysterious black pyramid discovered at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico; its bricks contained a unique form of energy which could be refined into energon. When Shockwave discovered this, he sent the Decepticons down to the city to investigate, where they came into conflict with the Autobots. The two factions battled it out in the city's cramped streets, and the Autobots emerged triumphant; afterwards, they set up an Autobot Road exit nearby in case the Decepticons returned.
