Omega Frequency

The Omega Frequency is a mystical sound in the Cybertron portion of the Unicron Trilogy continuity family.

The Omega Frequency is a sound emitted by the Omega Lock when it surges with power. For some reason, it can only be heard by humans, and possibly just Lori, Coby, and Bud.

The Frequency was a piercing buzz, described by Lori as a sound which set her teeth on edge. It was heard whenever a Cyber Planet Key was inserted into the Lock Champion Trap Revelation Showdown.

It was also present whenever the power of the Lock was invoked, even if the Lock itself was elsewhere, such as when Hot Shot, Red Alert, and Scattorshot were reformatted into the Cybertron Defense Team by the powers of both the Lock and Primus Critical. It was also heard when Optimus Prime and Vector Prime used the Lock and Rhisling to collapse the fire dimension, apparently destroying Megatron. However, since no humans were present at the time, nobody remarked on it. It sounded twice more on Cybertron, when the Lock was inserted into its receptacle in the Omega Temple and Primus reactivated Cybertron, and when a large amount of energon was pumped through it to reawaken the god Titans. It was also heard for the final time when all four Keys were inserted and the Lock used to fully revive Primus; strangely, the volume on this occasion was lower than usual End.

While the Lock normally only emitted the Frequency when active, there were exceptions. While it was sealed on the Atlantis, it constantly emitted the Frequency at a low volume, which allowed Bud, Coby, and Lori to find it. A particularly loud burst of the Frequency came from the Lock as soon as it was liberated by Vector Prime, as energy flowed through it and reactivated the space bridge Ship.

Interestingly, there have been times when the kids heard the Frequency despite the Lock being both far away and dormant. Indeed, they first heard it when Vector Prime projected the Atlantis Symbol on the wall of a canyon, which quickly persuaded him that they would be useful in tracking the Lock Haven. Based on this, there were also a couple of occasions where the fact that the kids didn't hear the Frequency in the presence of the Pattern indicated that the Lock was not present Search Time.

Notes

• The Omega Frequency was not present in the original Japanese Galaxy Force, being an addition made during its localization into Cybertron. The existence of the Frequency allowed the kids to take a more active role in the search for the Lock. Where Galaxy Force just had them trailing after the Autobots, Cybertron saw them taking the lead by following the sound only they could hear. In addition, it gave the kids a better reason to jet off to Gigantion. While Coby's mechanical skills and Lori's courage were certainly useful assets, their ability to hear the Frequency does strengthen their case when they beg their parents to let them go in "Family", even if this ability doesn't actually come in useful again.
• It is unclear how widespread the ability to hear the Omega Frequency really is. The only characters known to hear it are Bud, Lori, and Coby, and it is explicitly stated that no Transformer can hear it. What makes these three humans so special is never made clear. Possibly, they were just born that way. However, given the repeated theme of their childish minds being very flexible and able to quickly accept new realities, it's also possible the ability is linked to their youth. If this is the case, it is possible that other human children would also have been able to hear it.
