Rust Sea
From Transformers Wiki
The name or term "Sea of Rust" refers to more than one character or idea. For a list of other meanings, see Sea of Rust (disambiguation). |
The Rust Sea (also known as the Sea of Rust, the Great Rust Sea, or the Rust Spot) is an area of unstable planetary matter and molecular flux located along Cybertron's equator, stretching from Tyrest to Polyhex[1] to the Tagan Heights and Altihex. It constantly emits a collection of corrosive, yet otherwise relatively harmless gasses. It too is home to various forms of plant life by the time of the Beast Era. It is Cybertron's most prominent sea, the only other ones known being the Mithril Sea and Argon Sea.
The Hydrax Plateau rises out of the center of it. Cybertron's primary spaceport is located here, where planetary visitors must check in first.[2]

In Primax 797.18 Epsilon, the Rust Sea bordered the Undercity. Blackarachnia and a horde of Piranacons were sent to the Rust Sea as best strategy to reach the Vector Sigma chamber. One of its old utility tunnels that had been closed before the Great War was located deep under the Rust Sea's shore and due to long exposure to the sea's gasses been made easy to breach. This made the Piranacons momentarily afraid of their own safety while working in the area, but an aggravated Blackarachnia told them that it'd take six million years of exposure to the gasses before anyone'd have to worry about its effects.
As the Piranacons went to work, Blackarachnia searched the area to ensure their mission's secrecy. She found Rattrap nearby in the Undercity and chose to kill him just to be on the safe side. She was stopped by Depth Charge, who was on his way to the Rust Sea and ignored Rattrap's subsequent warning about the location. Taking a solitary swim to ponder on his recent resurrection, Depth Charge soon found himself surrounded by the Piranacons. Homecoming

The region that would come to be known as the Sea of Rust was the wasteland left when the Crystal City collapsed beneath the surface of Cybertron soon after the launch of Nova Prime's Ark six million years ago. All Good Things An Uneventful Night After two million years, it had become known as the Rust Spot, a several-hundred mile wide region packed with hazards that included nuclear winds, Toxic Sludge Swamps, Slicers, mist that corrodes your body while also disrupting your navigation systems. Most Cybertronians avoided the place, but a network of tunnels beneath the surface afforded those who absolutely had to pass through it safe passage. The Rust Spot was within driving distance of Iacon, and also quite close to Peptex. Omega's Conundrum Lagrange
Around four million years ago, Orion Pax and Nightbeat were sent into the Rust spot to perform a hostage exchange with Bludgeon's Decepticons, exchanging Rack'n'Ruin for Pax's old friend Ratchet. The pair were guided by Alpha Trion, foremost expert on the unmappable region. After fending off an attack by Slicers near the Tesk Crater, the trio were taken to the Decepticons' base in the underground tunnels, where Bludgeon revealed that the reason he'd picked the Rust Spot as the stage of the exchange was so that he could trap and capture Alpha Trion. Omega's Conundrum Bludgeon's subsequent attempt to execute Orion Pax accidentally led a commuter shuttle to crash in the Rust Spot, stranding Hoist in the wastelands for an extended period of time. Spotlight: Hoist
The chaotic conditions of the Rust Spot were calmed when Cybertron was reverted to its primordial state by Vector Sigma. Unbeknownst to anyone on Cybertron, around the time of Crystal City's destruction, Shockwave had planted his regenerative Ore-14 beneath the city, which caused the city to reconstruct itself beneath the surface of the reborn planet, where the Rust Spot had been. Shockwaves All Good Things Shockwave then used the city as his staging base as he attempted to enact the "Dark Cybertron" prophecy, but he was foiled by interference from Optimus Prime and Megatron, which caused the entire city to collapse into a miniature singularity that now floated in the middle of the Rust Sea. Dark Cybertron The World of Tomorrow The singularity played havoc local atmospheric patterns, recreating the hazardous conditions of the Rust Spot of the past, Redemption and leading modern Cybertronians to give the area a new name: the Sea of Rust. Sent to Cybertron to search for relics, the Camien Torchbearers began their quest in the Sea of Rust due to the fact Crystal City had once dwelt there. While searching, they were pulled into a brief conflict between Windblade, Chromia, and Arcee; the latter had stolen the Enigma of Combination from its holding place in Iacon and fled into the Sea of Rust to destroy it, but when the Torchbearers tried to protect the relic, it merged them into Victorion. An Uneventful Night The Torchbearers remained in the Sea of Rust, making a kind of home for themselves there; they observed the passage of the Dinobots through the region, and their battle with zombified Sweeps, Redemption but eventually, they were approached by Optimus Prime and joined his Autobots. Beast Wars: Uprising
The Great Rust Sea was the largest body of fluid on Cybertron. The Hydrax Plateau rose from its russet waves. Rivers such as the Redox River and Timonium River linked it to Dodecahex, Polyhex, Petrohex, Protihex, Median, and Kaon. Iacon, Uraya, Proximax, Yuss, Stanix Harmonex, Vos, Corumkan, Petrex, Burthov, and Hyperious sat on its shores. Cultural Appropriation At its narrowest point, the Straits of Yuss, it was only 15 hics wide and a quarter hic deep. This strait was defended on the Hydrax Plateau side by the Yuss Naval Batteries and on the Iacon side by twin batteries, straddling either side of the Trannis Fork River. The Resistance launched a major, two-pronged assault on the Builders' forces, attacking the Yuss Naval Batteries on land and sending a fleet to the straits by sea. Though the battle was costly, ultimately the Resistance prevailed and was able to ferry their forces across the straits from the Plateau to Iacon. Derailment

Though its toxic, armor-stripping climate made the region difficult to inhabit, the Sea of Rust was considered as a possible safe zone for the Autobots to be positioned during the final days of the war for Cybertron. Hound was dispatched to scout out the area. The Autobot Alphastrike Counterforce later inhabited an underground base on the outer edge of the Sea of Rust that shielded them from the toxic atmosphere. Siege Teletraan-1 Data Files While there, Alphastrike analyzed the Decepticon Phantomstrike Squadron's attack patterns to anticipate their next strike on key Autobot positions. While the Phantomstrike Squadron was positioned at Darkmount, south-east of Alphastrike's position,[4] Greenlight—who had been tracking the Phantomstrike Squadron from her drop point in a nearby deserted Decepticon zone—attempted to transmit the all-clear for the attack to commence, but her transmission was discovered by the Phantomstrike Squadron who corrupted its signal. Teletraan-1 attempted to retrieve the full transmission from the Decepticons to gather the location data needed to assess the threat. Siege Teletraan-1 Data Files

A vast wasteland of treacherous weather and hazardous obstacles, including plasma bolts and metallic vortexes, the Sea of Rust was one of the most dangerous places on Cybertron, inhabited by beings known as the Sparkless, reanimated corpses that sought out the sparks of the living so they could return to life. No Autobot who entered the region ever emerged, but the Decepticon Seekers managed to map the area, marking safe routes through it.
During the Great War, the Autobots located the Allspark within the Sea of Rust, Optimus Prime leading a team in to recover it, guided by the defected Jetfire. While Jetfire initially navigated the group around the hazards, they were soon beset by the Sparkless. Siege episode 5
After the Sparkless had killed Moonracer, the Allspark appeared on the battlefield. After Optimus had claimed it, the Autobots left the region. Siege episode 6

Though a mythological account held that the Great Rust Sea formed from the nucleon of Primus himself, I Have No Mouth And I Must Starscream the Sea of Rust began with the rust worms. During Cybertron's Age of Expansion, the worms discovered the metal planet and began feasting on its innards, secreting liquid rust as they consumed. When the greatest minds on Cybertron failed to contain the animals, the planet did so itself, forming an impenetrable basin that halted the worms and forming the Sea of Rust. Sea of Rust I
In the era of Optimus Prime, Jumpstream crossed the Sea of Rust to reach the White Tower when the Prime ordered the release of Pyra Magna. Awakenings While analysing the planet's unusual tectonic activity, Geomotus speculated that a series of quakes could fracture the sea's impermeable layer and release its rust worms into the planet's crust. As the political crisis continued, Geomotus and Landmine surveyed the Sea, installing sensors to monitor the basin. When they finished their work, they chanced across Termagax who brought with her the Decepticons seeking the Enigma of Combination. Sea of Rust I When the Autobots and Decepticon armies fighting just outside her door, Sea of Rust II Termagax decided to launch the Enigma into the Sea of Rust. The Enigma eventually fell into Skytread's hands only for another planetary tremor to finally rupture the impermeable layer, the Sea expanding to swallow Skytread and the Enigma, the Autobots understanding the existential threat this posed to their planet eclipsed the Decepticon expansion. On the hunt for the escaped Dinobots, Sideswipe and Cliffjumper made their way to one of the toxic bayous adjoining the Rust Sea. Among the crystalline growths along the bayou's edge that resulted from the Rust Sea's energon particles solidifying due to evaporation, they found Slugfest. Cliffjumper ran up to the little guy and wrestled him down, ignoring his claims that he had big friends. That is, until such a big friend burst through the tree-like crystalline growth, looking decidedly displeased. Cliffjumper's and Sideswipe's initial attacks had no effect on the creature and the situation evolved such that Sideswipe became the involuntary distraction, racing through the bayou with the behemoth right behind him, while Cliffjumper tried his best to subdue the creature. Sideswipe eventually got himself stuck in some of the crystalline growth, at which point Cliffjumper finally found an opportunity to trick the Dinobot into unconsciousness.
After getting Astrotrain to come pick up the two Dinobots, the duo noticed Huffer rushing a little further down the bayou. They cornered him and interrogated him on why he was in such a hurry. In return for an energon rod and believing the information was not going to earn the two anything, Huffer revealed that he had spotted Grimlock in the Badlands. Transformers: Fall of Cybertron
An ancient civilization once dwelled in the city that became the Sea of Rust, predating the Transformers' civil war by a few millennia. However, a sudden cataclysm oxidized the entire region, forming the infamous Sea. Perceptor knew of some unconfirmed rumors of a sudden explosion being the source of the disaster; though whether it was due to a technology gone awry, a hostile conflict, or something else entirely, would likely never be known.
After locating an energon lake there, Shockwave used the Sea of Rust as a location to build his prototype space bridge tower. Grimlock's Lightning Strike Coalition team was drawn there to investigate strange energy readings, and they were promptly captured by Insecticons to be experimented on by Shockwave. Jazz and Cliffjumper later ended up in the Sea of Rust during their hunt for Grimlock. Fighting their way through ruins and rust storms, they eventually found the energon lake and Shockwave's refinery. After destroying the refinery, the two Autobots reported back to Optimus Prime, and a huge transport was dispatched to retrieve the energon from the lake. Fall of Cybertron
