Sideswipe 2: The Revenge

A young, cheerful, and impulsive robot, just like his precursor, Sideswipe (also known as Covert Clone Sideswipe) has little idea of the important role in the history of his species that he plays: he and his fellow young Transformers are the first generation of Cybertronians born after the Great War, a momentous occasion and—perhaps—the next step on the evolutionary journey of the Cybertronian race.

More often than not, he is a direct clone of his namesake.

Clone 80253 was um, cloned, from the original Sideswipe by Jhiaxus as part of his "second generation" intended to inherit a new Cybertronian Empire after the end of the Great War. The original Sideswipe discovered his unborn clone gestating in a tube while infiltrating Jhiaxus's base on Qre. When he was in danger of being discovered, the elder Sideswipe stashed the half-cooked clone behind one of the other tubes and posed as the second generation Sideswipe. When the disguised Sideswipe the elder learned the hard way he couldn't breath embryonic goop and busted out of the tube, Soundwave and Ironhide reacted with surprise that their "brother" had activated early. I have no mouth, and I must homage.

The young robot who would come to be known as "Sideswipe" was part of the first generation of sparks to emerge from Cybertron's hot spots in more than four million years, and the first generation of post-war Cybertronians to be born, some three years after the conclusion of the Great War. Emerging from Alyon's newly ignited hot spot, Redemption the sparks were absorbed by the Titan Trypticon to grow properly, eventually maturing into healthy protoforms by drawing upon Trypticon's own body to form their sentio metallico. Salvation

After several months of development, the protoforms, including "Sideswipe," had begun to cool and develop rudimentary robotic bodies. The Dead Come Home, Part 2 Starscream became aware of this next generation, hidden in the Cybertronian wilderness and manipulated events so that Optimus Prime and an unlikely group of allies would find them, so that he could claim the protoforms for his own. The Dead Come Home, Part 1

When Arcee trailed Sludge into Cybertron's depths, "Sideswipe" jumped the former from behind, and Arcee's initial willingness to kill the little Transformer caused Trypticon to awaken so as to protect his charges. Once the situation had calmed down, Arcee introduced her new friend to Optimus Prime and affectionately named him "Sideswipe" after her recently departed friend. To ensure that Starscream wouldn't be able to manipulate the future of their species, Prime announced that Trypticon would become Earth's new embassy on Cybertron: as a result, Trypticon and all the protoforms he carried within him were now under human sovereignty. "Maybe I'll give Strongarm a call."

By the time that Thundercracker visited Trypticon, Sideswipe and the other protoforms had grown to their adult dimensions and happily played with Buster while her owner chatted with Marissa Faireborn. Starscream: The Movie Arcee would later tell Aileron about the protoforms, mulling that his name was not reflective of the desire to step away from future fighting. Surfeit of Primes

During the Maximal invasion of Cybertron, Trypticon realized that he could not allow his charges to be jeopardized and used his spacebridge to warp to Earth, taking Sideswipe and the others with him The Hallowing and arriving near Mount Rushmore. Ultimately, this catastrophe was merely a precursor to something far worse, and when Unicron devoured Cybertron, Sideswipe stood by Soundwave as the survivors regrouped on Earth, watching as Thundercracker arrived to speak with Marissa Faireborn. Assembly

As Trypticon prepared to join the fight alongside Metroplex, Sideswipe helped unload and secure the Titan's cargo of as-yet-unborn sparks. Ceremony Though Trypticon perished in the battle for Earth, the Sparks survived; some time later, following Optimus Prime's death and funeral, Sideswipe and several other members of the new generation joined Arcee in Little Cybertron as she told the tale of the Autobot leader's final moments. At some point during the war for Cybertron, Sideswipe was used as a template for a clone to be built for covert operations. Covert Clone Sideswipe was built and ranked as a Ground Command Special Ops Private. He was also made a member of the "Autobot Alphastrike Counterforce". After Hound scouted out the Sea of Rust for a place to set up a possible safe zone, Covert Clone Sideswipe and rest of the Autobot Alphastrike Counterforce made themselves at home inside an underground base on the outer edge of the Sea of Rust that shielded them from the toxic atmosphere. Siege Teletraan-1 Data Files While there, Alphastrike analyzed the Decepticon Phantomstrike Squadron's attack patterns to anticipate their next strike on key Autobot positions. While the Phantomstrike Squadron was positioned at Darkmount, south-east of Alphastrike's position,[2] Greenlight—who had been tracking the Phantomstrike Squadron from her drop point in a nearby deserted Decepticon zone—attempted to transmit the all clear for the attack to commence, but her transmission was discovered by the Phantomstrike Squadron who corrupted its signal. Teletraan-1 attempted to retrieve the full transmission from the Decepticons to gather the location data needed to assess the threat. Following this a battle ensued between both strike teams. The regular Generation 2 Sideswipe toy was repurposed as a namesake of the first Sideswipe in the 2005 IDW continuity.
Part of the first assortment of Generation 2 Autobot cars, Sideswipe's original toy had his colors re-arranged to a black car mode with red and white robot parts, plus new neon green "racing" decals were added to the mix. His original rocket launcher was removed, and replaced with a large spring-loaded launcher that could be hand-held or mounted on his retooled car mode roof.
His new spring-loaded missile launcher was taken from Snow Serpent from the G.I. Joe toyline.
