Should we have a section for fan-made kitbashes? ZeldaTheSwordsman 19:12, 18 June 2009 (EDT)
- No. The only reason we'd have pictures or info on fan-made kitbashes would be if Hasbro themselves explicitly ripped one off. You could *almost* make a case for putting one of Don F's old Macromasters up, but that'd still be pushing it. Hooper_X 19:30, 18 June 2009 (EDT)
Legal analysis
What's the legal issue with mass-produced fan-made kitbash stuff that's obviously meant to be a preexisting TF character (but not called as such), like that P.E. Shadow Warrior thing or the Fansproject Springer lookalike? Is it just as legal as official TF products whose vehicle modes are obviously meant to be a real thing but tweaked to avoid licensing fees? Or are they as illegal as knockoffs?
I'm pretty sure the answer to this should be somewhere on this wiki. Item42 01:40, 14 March 2010 (EST)
- Hey, if my question is irrelevant someone should tell me. Item42 04:49, 5 June 2010 (EDT)
- They're knockoffs. That's pretty much always been this wiki's policy. -hx 11:12, 5 June 2010 (EDT)
- For Hasbro's response to these third parties, see Hasbro Q&A/May 2009, particularly here and here. A related conversation can be found on the talk page for knockoffs, continued in another section of the same talk page. --Rhymus (talk) 04:51, 29 September 2014 (EDT)
- If there were such as a thing as a "Knockoff wiki" or something, would a link from TFWIKI to such article violate TFWIKI rules? Hida Atarasi 17:51, 29 August 2010 (EDT)
Move to customizing
Personally I had always heard of it as customizing, but the real reason I'm proposing this move is because BotCon holds customization classes not kitbashing classes. Thus customizing is the "official" term, just as "retool" is the official term instead of "remold". Khajidha 08:22, 8 April 2010 (EDT)
- I'm actually for it, as "customizing" is a broader term than "kitbashing." Kitbashing implies parts mixed from multiple toys or scratchbuilt, while "customizing" is a term that can cover repaints (as BotCon does), kitbashes, and so forth.--RosicrucianTalk 13:48, 5 June 2010 (EDT)
