In the name of the Moon, I will punish you!

The Decepticons open fire onOptimus Prime, forcing him to his knees.MegatronrevealsLeader-1and combines with the Mini-Con, activating the giant cannon at his waist. The cannon fires with such force that Megatron gets flung backward. Fortunately, the shot misses its intended target and destroys the hill behind Optimus. Though Optimus is amused, Megatron merely states that it was only a taste of his power and laughs maniacally at length. Then he begins repeatedly firing on the Autobots while sliding backward and finally falling over on his back. Unfortunately, the blasts cause a landslide that tumbles towardsAlexis,Carlos, andRad.Hot Shotshields the kids, keeping them safe, whileRed Alertdoes the same with the Mini-Cons. Alexis wonders what happened to Megatron before spotting three glints of light: moreMini-Con storage panels.

StarscreamandDemolishorrush to their fallen leader to check on his health, and he tells them to destroy Prime. Optimus interrupts, grabs Starscream by the head, and throws him at Demolishor before grappling with Megatron.

"Whoa... my hands are huge... They can touch everything but themselves... Oh wait."

Red Alert pulls one of the Mini-Con panels from the ground, activating it. Hot Shot gains the Mini-ConJoltwhile Red Alert combines withLongarm, and the pair fire on the Decepticons with the new weapons they've unlocked. Megatron, Starscream, and Demolishor promptly retreat.Cyclonussticks around long enough to steal two Mini-Cons the children just dug up and warps away as well, cackling insanely. On theMoon,Megatron is not at all pleased—until Cyclonus arrives and presents one of the stolen Mini-Cons.

"Go Team Mini-Con!"

Optimus tells the kids that Megatron is likely to return, now that he knows there are more Mini-Cons on Earth. Rad complains that the whole thing was an accident, leading to a flashback of him findingHigh Wire;he'd never have done it had he known it would start a war. Everyone makes proper introductions, and Optimus gives further exposition about the Mini-Cons' function and the Decepticons' purpose on Earth. Rad asks if the Autobots want the Mini-Cons for power like the Decepticons, and Optimus assures him that the Autobots treat Mini-Cons as equals while the Decepticons treat them as slaves. The three kids offer to help the Autobots in their quest. After Rad and Carlos joke that they tricked Alexis about understanding the Mini-Con language, they make amends and bump fists. The Autobots are intrigued by this Earth custom and bump fists as well, making the ground shake.

The next day at school, there's abasketballgame, and Fred gets hit in the face with the ball several times. Rad and Carlos play dumb when Billy asks them about the earthquake, and Alexis points out that they would have heard about an earthquake on the radio. Rad and Carlos also explain away their new bicycle and skateboard, though Billy still suspects them of being up to something. Alexis catches up to her friends to inform them they almost blew it.

On the Moon, Starscream and Demolishor argue about who will be Megatron's right-hand man when he conquers the universe, and they end up fighting. Demolishor is bigger and stronger, but Starscream proves to be faster and more skillful, ultimately winning. But Megatron himself interrupts and orders them to stop wasting their energy, reminding them of their mission to hunt the Mini-Cons. He activates one of the Mini-Cons Cyclonus recovered,Blackout, and presents him to Demolishor as his "little partner in crime." While Starscream fumes, Megatron tells him he has to capture his Mini-Con himself.

Billy and Fred go into the mountains again and observe that it looks like a bulldozer drove through. Underground, Carlos and Rad are marveling at the activated spaceship. The Autobots present the kids withLaserbeak,a small bird that transforms into a video camera. After Optimus explains its purpose, High Wire alerts them more Mini-Cons are coming online, so everyone enters the command center.

Notes

Differences withLegends of the Microns

  • Armada's opening dialogue has Optimus warning Megatron to leave the kids out of their fight or else, and Megatron inviting Prime to show his wrath as it holds no candle to his own, saying that he'll crush Prime as well as the kids. InLegends of the Microns,Prime says Megatron getting the children involved is unforgivable. Megatron fires back by saying he only cares about the Mini-Cons, not the planet, and that he'll eliminate whoever gets in his way. After saving the kids and Mini-Cons, Optimus asks if they're alright instead of telling them to run.
  • Instead of Rad, Alexis provides the narration in which she says though she was initially a tad slow, she realized the Autobots were there to save her and her friends. Then she reintroduces herself, Rad, and Carlos to the audience.
  • InArmada, the shot from behind the Autobots zooms back slowly, almost frame-by-frame, until Rad's head is visible before cutting abruptly; the only visible Autobots are Optimus and partially Hot Shot. InLegends of the Microns, the zoom-out is smooth and slightly faster, but the scene's length is identical.Allof the kids, Mini-Cons, and Autobots are in the shot at the end of it (see below).
  • The Japanese dub plays the track "Let's Roll Out, Cybertrons!"during the opening scene.Armadareplaces it with the Transformers theme.
  • Starscream's first line doesn't come until the shot of him corkscrewing in the air. The previous scene of him firing at Optimus is silent, and Prime doesn't speak again until after the landslide.
  • InArmada,Megatron asks Optimus if he'll surrender, but out of character, Prime says he doesn't want to miss any of the fun. So Megatron says his new partner Mini-Con, Leader-1, will end Prime's sense of humor. InLegends of the Microns,Megatron ponders what is wrong with Optimus, calling him nothing more than a puppet, before promising to give Prime "a special kind of beating," with Leader-1 lending his power.
  • Prime's quip about Megatron missing his shot is gone, and Megatron realizes that he can't aim right if he uses too much power before reveling in his destructive energy. Then, as he blasts the Autobots, Megatron struggles to handle his increased strength, but inArmada,he quips, "It's time to turn it up."
  • When Hot Shot and Red Alert save the kids and Mini-Cons, Hot Shot asks if they're okay while Red remarks on the close call.
  • Optimus doesn't demand Starscream to get out of his way. Then Prime says he will destroy Megatron's evil ambitions, and Megatron tells him to shut up before they lock hands.
  • Upon Powerlin xing with Jolt, the beam from Hot Shot's cannon is red inArmada. It's yellow inLegends of the Microns, evidently changed to match the initial flare of energy from the gun, yellow in both versions (see collage below). As the series consistently makes Autobot firepower red, that would mean the Japanese version changed this to bewrong.
  • Megatron remarks not on his soldiers' incompetence but Hot Shot and Red Alert obtaining Mini-Cons.
  • Red Alert and Hot Shot address Optimus, and he asks them what Cyclonus is doing. Later, the shot of Cyclonus getting the two panels the children found is wider inLegends of the Microns,as the one inArmadaobscures his right hand (see below).
  • Back on the Moon, Megatron curses the Autobots before Cyclonus returns and presents the Mini-Con panel, much to Megatron's surprise, saying he took advantage of the situation when the others retreated. Megatron compliments him on the job well done and tells Starscream and Demolishor they should learn from Cyclonus.
(thumbnail)
Legends of the Micronsscreencaps (left), depict a string of minor changes to theArmadaanimation (right) that represent an effort that could have been better directed elsewhere, like the script.
  • The discussion between the kids and Autobots after the battle isessentiallythe same in both versions, but it hits a lot of different beats along the way:
    • Armadahas them talking about the Decepticons' imminent return, but they discuss the crashed spaceship inLegends of the Microns.
    • After Carlos's last flashback appearance, there's no dialogue until returning to the present when Rad says that his touching High Wire's panel brought the Transformers to Earth. Then as Optimus explains the light traveling to Cybertron, the scene goes silent when Cybertron appears.Armadaplays the Transformers theme during the flashback's second half after the lights venture into outer space. InLegends of the Microns, the track "Planet in Ruin - Unsolved Mystery"plays first as inArmada. No music plays when the scene cuts back to present-day Rad and Optimus, and then "Super Convoy" plays for the rest of the flashback sequence.
    • While the kids and Prime introduce themselves to each other inArmada,Optimus responds to their inquiries by explaining the nature of Cybertron and the Transformer races inLegends of the Microns;introductions come later, whichArmadareplaces with the kids offering the Autobots their help. During their intros,Legends of the Micronsadds the kids thanking the Autobots for saving them, and when Alexis mentions how scared she was, Optimus ascribes it to the children seeing the Transformers' large size for the first time.
    • Instead of admiring the Autobots' coolness, Carlos tells them the kids already know Megatron's identity. Rather than Optimus calling the Mini-Cons the pawns in the war, he explains how the Decepticons want to use their power to conquer Cybertron and the universe. Then Hot Shot and Red Alert say the subsequent lines rather than Optimus.
    • Armadahas Rad question how the Autobots' motives for finding the Mini-Cons differ from the Decepticons.Legends of the Micronssees him worry more about the Pandora's Box he fears the kids opened, thinking it was by chance.Armadare-adds this a bit later while the kids offer to help.
    • Armadahas some awkward silence after Prime says the Decepticons see the Mini-Cons as slaves. InLegends of the Microns,Carlos translates the Mini-Cons' speech; Optimus is surprised the kids can understand their language, and Carlos asks if the Autobots can't understand them. Rather than beginning off-screen, High Wire doesn't talk until the next scene when Rad translates that he wants to help the Autobots find his other Mini-Con friends on Earth. Optimus notes the kids' ability to understand the Mini-Cons as unique, talking about fate binding the kids and Mini-Cons, further foreshadowing the development learned late in the series. He follows this by discussing how they must stop the Decepticons while explaining the Mini-Cons' history inArmada.
    • InArmada,Alexis tells Optimus the kids should help since they opened the Pandora's Box that resumed the war, and only Rad can understand the Mini-Cons. InLegends of the Microns, she says the Decepticons will keep searching for Mini-Cons on Earth, that humanity doesn't want to stop evolving, and the Autobots need the kids sincetheycan understand the Mini-Cons.
    • Rad claims he guessed what the Mini-Cons were saying, followed by him and Carlos teasing Alexis about it inArmada.InLegends of the Microns, they joke about Alexis breaking from her studies to join the Transformers experience; therefore, the source of Alexis's resultant anger differs between versions: It's about being teased inArmada, while it's righteous fury over the boys downplaying the situation inLegends of the Microns. When Carlos and Rad hold out their fists inArmada,Rad tells Alexis they're just joking, and after the trio fist bumps, Alexis asks Hot Shot why he looks confused. InLegends of the Microns,Rad says, "Welcome back, Alexis! To exploring in the mud again." Then after the group fist bump, Alexis says it's been a while since they've done that.
    • As the Autobots try bro-fisting, Carlos comments on their remarkable strength. Then Optimus declares the crashed spaceship will serve as their base during the final fist bump among the Autobots.
  • Billy and Fred spout generic trash talk inArmada, whileLegends of the Micronshas them actively questioning the others about what they were doing in the cave, leading into the rest of the discussion, post-game. A point in their conversation thatArmadaloses is that the earthquake knocked the research center's computers offline, explaining why there's no recording.
  • Instead of Carlos downplaying his skateboard as he does inArmada,he sings its praises. Billy is silent while he and Fred watch Rad and Carlos leave. Afterward, Fred asks if Billy is thinking of a plan inArmadabut notes something strange about how the others jumped over the stairs inLegends of the Microns. Then they argue about getting another transmitter. During Alexis's brief internal monologue, she thinks Rad and Carlos are idiots. Billy pines for Alexis inArmadabut talks about returning to the cave inLegends of the Microns.
  • InArmada,Starscream and Demolishor fight over who will be Megatron's right-hand bot. InLegends of the Microns, they're competing to see who will get the second Mini-Con Cyclonus captured earlier.Armadagives Demolishor an extra line when he charges toward Starscream as the Japanese version is silent. After Starscream and Demolishor's scuffle, Megatron scolds them for fighting pointlessly like children inArmadabut ends the fight after seeing all he needs to see inLegends of the Microns.
  • As Megatron scolds them off-screen inArmada,Starscream says the scene's last line in the Japanese dub instead of Megatron with his mouth now animated, where he muses the fight was too easy.
  • Megatron's speech to his troops about gaining Mini-Con power isArmada's interpretation. InLegends of the Microns, his pontifications are directed at the panel itself, beseeching the Mini-Con within to come forth.
  • After the Decepticons' scene, the camera zooms towards Earth inLegends of the Micronsbut zooms out inArmada.
  • Armadaspeeds up the downward pan from Billy and Fred to the Autobot base beneath.
  • InLegends of the Microns,Hot Shot says Red Alert did some repairs around the base and, rather than criticize Carlos's analysis of the base as evident, Alexis chastises him for repeatedly saying "incredible." When Rad appears and starts talking about how remarkable the base is, he suggests other words Carlos could use. Hilarious.
  • The animation of Optimus as he tells Red Alert to give them Laserbeak is entirely redrawn, and the shot of Laserbeak transforming in Alexis's hands is cropped much tighter (see the comparison at right).
  • InLegends of the Microns,Rad translates that High Wire says another Mini-Con has awakened. Then Optimus and Hot Shot's dialogue sets up the control room as Optimus says everyone should head there, and Hot Shot explains to the confused kids that Red Alert has repaired it. Carlos stops himself from saying, "Incredible" again, and Optimus tells the kids to follow. Carlos speaks in Alexis's place as they run, imploring the Autobots to wait.
  • Upon entering the control room, the Japanese dub plays the track "Cybertrons, Transform!",butArmadaplays the Transformers theme again.
  • For the ending narration inArmada,Rad says the universe's only hope was that Autobots would be the first to find the Mini-Cons. InLegends of the Microns,Alexis gives the narration, saying this is how the kids ended up helping the Autobots look for the Mini-Cons.

Animation and technical errors

  • The opening battle animation is atrociously bad, almost on par with that of "Decisive Battle,"especially with the size discrepancies between the humans and Transformers.
  • When Megatron takes the panel from Cyclonus, Megatron doesn't have a mouth. The Japanese dub adds his mouth.
  • The stock footage shot of the Decepticons shown as Optimus talks to the kids strangely excludes Cyclonus.
  • After Optimus explains the Mini-Cons' history to the kids, there's a second of awkward silence before the kids plead for Optimus to let them help; viewers can see Rad walking to the railing in the same shot on the far left. Optimus finishes talking before Rad moves in the Japanese dub, and Rad begins his line and continues it into the next shot.
  • When Alexis asks Hot Shot what's wrong, her eyes aren't drawn as looking at him; this isn't a mistake inLegends of the Micronssince Alexis doesn't say anything to Hot Shot during the scene.
  • While the Autobots laugh after their team fistbump, Red Alert and Hot Shot's mouths don't move. InLegends of the Microns, they don't laugh.
  • After going up the stairs while leaving school, it looks like Carlos is flying on Grindor; Fred comments on this in the Japanese dub.
  • When Billy shouts at Fred while talking about Alexis, Billy's mouth doesn't move. His mouth is animated inLegends of the Microns.
  • During the shot of the Decepticon base, Megatron talks about becoming Cybertron's supreme ruler, after which Starscream and Demolishor fight. However, Starscream and Demolishor act surprised by Megatron after their brawl like they're initially unaware of him; therefore, his dialogue at the start is a mistake, especially since it seems Starscream talks directly to him before fighting Demolishor.Legends of the Micronsfixes it by having Starscream and Demolishor speak at that point instead, and Megatron doesn't talk until he appears later.
  • Demolishor's transforming animation during his battle with Starscream on the Moon consists of his robot model leaning on or off-screen.
  • After Demolishor throws Starscream off himself, Starscream's wings are missing in one shot.
  • As Starscream reattaches his sword after his fight with Demolishor, the Decepticon symbol on his right wing is missing, and there is a purple spot on his arm that should be white.
  • Part of Starscream's shoulders (where his thrusters lay) are colored red instead of white in two shots.
  • As Megatron works his wicked way upon the Mini-Con panel, it starts as the correct size before taking up most of the table in two shots.Legends of the Micronsshows the panel as the proper size consistently.
  • During the shots of Demolishor, Starscream, and Cyclonus facing Megatron on his throne, the Decepticon symbols on Starscream's wings are missing.
  • The Mini-Con on Cyclonus's shoulder is ridiculously puny.
  • The shot of Megatron with the newly awakened Blackout reuses Megatron's animation earlier in the episode, from when he delighted about the power boost from Leader-1.
  • In the next shot of Demolishor, he is missing the thick black outlines around his eyes.
  • When Carlos tells Rad about the others mocking him about the base, Carlos's mouth is on the side of his face.
  • InLegends of the Microns, the shot that pans from Optimus to Red Alert as Laserbeak flies off his finger is slower than inArmada, and the sound of Laserbeak taking off is heard later than intended.
  • Alexis's hands seem to change position during the scene of her holding Laserbeak.
  • Optimus's head turns a moment before the base alarm goes off in the Japanese dub.

Continuity notes

  • The Mini-Cons Jolt and Longarm debut in this episode.
  • Cyclonus stole twoMini-Con storage panelsfrom the children and presented only one to Megatron. Crumplezone is perched on Cyclonus's shoulder when Megatron offers Blackout to Demolishor, so Cyclonus must have activated him off-screen.
  • This episode's Japanese dub has characters referencethe Pitand Megatron's title as theEmperor of Destructionfor the first time.
  • InLegends of the Microns, when Rad welcomes Alexis back to "exploring in the mud again," he's following up on what he said to Carlos in "First Encounter"about Alexis growing distant from them.
  • The kids introduce the Autobots and Mini-Cons to the concept offist bumping, which according toLegends of the Microns Year Book 2003,shows Optimus Prime's lighthearted side for the first time in the series.
  • This episode begins the short subplot of the Autobots setting up their new base and working on it, lasting several episodes.
  • In most continuities,Starscreamsare usually dishonest and treacherous; this continuity proves to break that "trend."ArmadaStarscream is often just Megatron's punching bag and bullied by his peers for no good reason. He's often left trying to prove his worth andpunishedfor it. This episode is the first where we see the beginning of his development.
    • This episode also starts the short subplot of Starscream wanting a Mini-Con of his own.Legends of the Micronsexplains that Megatron gives the other Mini-Con to Demolishor not to spite Starscream asArmadaimplies, but because he believes Starscream has the skill to find one himself, rather than settling for Megatron giving him a Mini-Con.
  • The kids are given Laserbeak in this episode.
  • Gadgets and powers:
    • Starscream uses his sword for the first time to prove to Demolishor thatheis still the winner, even in defeat.
    • Megatron uses his antlers to force a Mini-Con to awaken for the second time.
  • Powerlinx forms:
    • Megatron Powerlinx with Leader-1 for the first time, receiving additional firepower to his hip turret; this is the series's first Powerlinx.
      • The extra power proves too much for Megatron as the kickback sends him sliding across the ground; he becomes accustomed to it in later episodes.
    • Hot Shot Powerlinx with Jolt in robot mode for the first time, activating his "Axlezooka," or "Giant Bazooka," as it's called on his model sheets.
    • Red Alert Powerlinx with Longarm in robot mode for the first time, unlocking his laser gun.

Continuity errors

  • Rad's "previously on" narration is incorrect because it's playing over new footage, notany from the previous episode. The Japanese dub removes it and has Alexis give the opening narration instead, making sense as the second-to-last scene before the openingcommercial bumperfocuses on her.
  • Red Alert and Hot Shot state the obvious about Optimus getting hit. InLegends of the Microns, they only call out his name.
  • Optimus strangely only refers to Hot Shot after the landslide. In the Japanese dub, he correctly refers to both Hot Shot and Red Alert.
  • After the kids get saved from the landslide, Alexis wonders where Megatron is, overlooking how she and the others just had a near-death experience. InLegends of the Microns, she rightly expresses how she was afraid they would die.
  • Rad and Carlos look surprised after Alexis points out the Mini-Con panels like she just made a huge discovery, but how would they know that when Alexis merely told them to "look over there"? In the Japanese dub, Alexis explicitly says that they're panels, and in a more excited tone, now justifying the boys' expressions.
  • Megatron announces a puzzling intent to "take matters into his own hands" before retreating, which never amounts to anything. In the Japanese dub, he's merely calling a retreat when he warps away.
  • Red Alert and Hot Shot look to the side after Optimus says they're going after the Decepticons, but it's unclear why.Legends of the Micronshas Optimus asking them about Cyclonus instead, so they look away because of Prime's question. Cyclonus being the sole Decepticon left behind after the other three retreat is a detail thatArmadaneglects.
  • After Cyclonus warps away, Rad says the Decepticon pisses him off despite barely knowing him. InLegend of the Microns,Rad says, "Damn, that guy..."
  • After retreating to base, Megatron says, "This is taking far too long," but what he means is never clarified. The Japanese dub changes his line so that he curses the Autobots instead.
  • The kids couldn't understand the Mini-Cons' speech last episode. In this episode, Rad fluctuates between accurately translating for High Wire and only guessing what he says. The kids always understand the Mini-Cons inLegends of the Microns.
  • InLegends of the Microns,Megatron somehow knows Blackout will be the Mini-Con to awaken from the panel beforehand.
  • After the alarm for a new Mini-Con goes off, Optimus says the Decepticons have been busy, but how would he know what the Decepticons are doing, or if they're even responsible for the alarm? He instead says everyone should head to the Control Room inLegends of the Microns.

Transformers references

  • In the Japanese dub, this episode features the show's first mentions of the Pit and Megatron being called the Emperor of Destruction. The Pit is the Transformers' way of referring to Hell, and "Emperor of Destruction" is a title the Decepticons or some other factions use, belonging to their absolute ruler or highest-ranking official.
  • InLegends of the Microns,Optimus tells the kids that the Transformers were born from Cybertron.
  • The Autobot base location being in a mountain is like theArkfromGeneration 1,where their base is within a dormant volcano.

Real-world references

  • Alexis and Optimus say, "All for one, and one for all!" It's a famous phrase from the novel,The Three Musketeers.
  • Alexis compares the three kids inadvertently restarting the Transformers war on Earth to opening up aPandora's Box.

Trivia

  • The kanji trọng gian would be pronounced as "nakama,"while"tomodachi"is for the kanji hữu đạt.
  • Rhino's "Best Battles" DVD compilation includes this episode, along with "Metamorphosis,""Confrontation,"and"Decisive Battle".
  • Rad, Alexis, and Carlos seem too happy with themselves for beating Billy and Fred in three-on-two basketball. It's not like three victories in a row would be a great struggle. Dicks. They cheer about their perfect teamwork inLegends of the Microns.
  • In the Japanese dub, Rad jokes that Alexis is the "mother" of the trio.
  • The episode'sArmadaversion implies Billy has feelings for Alexis, which is never brought up or expanded upon for the rest of the show. The Japanese dub never makes this implication.
  • Despite the episode title,Armadadoesn't detail the derelict Mini-Con ship or the Autobots setting it up as their base, unlike the Japanese dub.
  • Alexis's line in the Japanese dub about everyone wanting to keep evolving later becomes part of the second opening song, "Transformers: Kōtetsu no Yūki."
