Brainmaster
From Transformers Wiki
- The Brainmasters are anAutobotsubgroup from theVictoryera of theGeneration 1continuity family.
TheBrainmasters(ブレインマスターBureinmasutā) are the elite members of theUniversal Defense ForceSector One troops. Though outwardly similar in practise toHeadmasters,Brainmasters are actually the inverse: where Headmaster technology allows the diminutiveCyberdroidsofMasterto bond with largeTranstectorbodies, Brainmaster technology was created as a means of transferring the consciousness of a full-size Cybertronian to aMicromaster-scale Transtector.[1]These tiny Transtectors, each known as a "Brain" or a "Brain Robo", link to their larger bodies by entering a chest cockpit, then moving up to take their place within the body's pre-existing helmet, forming the face and interior cerebral circuits of their large robot forms.
As an unexpected side-effect of the brainwave-duplication process, Brainmasters gained "Brain Power" (Burein Kinō): an incredible boost to their courage, strength, intelligence and skill that makes them "one of the most powerful warriors in the universe".[2]Each of the four Brainmasters exemplifies one of these talents, represented by the name of their Brain. The four Brainmasters are:
- Star Saber(Brain of Courage)
- Blacker(Brain of Strength)
- Laster(Brain of Skill)
- Braver(Brain of Intelligence)

The Brainmaster upgrade was developed as a way to bring Cybertron and its alliesMasterandMicrocloser together. The process was discovered to amplify its users' mental faculties, and the Universal Defense Force soldiers who utilized it became the galaxy's mightiest soldiers. When the Decepticons learnt of the process, they tried to take it for their own, forcing the Autobots to destroy the labs that spawned the process. No-one proved able to duplicate the process afterwards.Ask Vector Prime, 2015/06/23

- Road Caesargiftset (includes Blacker, Laster & Braver)
- Known designers:Masakatsu Saito(concept artist)
- The three standard Brainmasters were sold both individually and as a giftset. The toys are united by theirgimmick;placing the "Brain" robot figure into a Brainmaster's chest cavity then closing the plate pushes the inner core of the small robot up, forming the larger robot's face. The small robot figures can fit in the larger robots' cockpits in vehicle mode. Owing to this gimmick, they possess unusually simplistic transformations roughly the same as most contemporary Micromaster cars, despite being some of the largest Autobot car toys of their generation. Laster and Braver have large portions ofdiecastmetal in their legs, likely to balance the combined mode, while Blacker features large portions of chromed plastic. All three feature surprisingly robust rubber tires. The chest gimmick "doors" on all three also have a hidden joint that exists solely to breakaway and reattach if too much pressure is applied while inserting the Brainmaster.
- They were redecoed, without most of their combinerkibble, into theMotorvators.
- Brainmaster Leader(1989)
- Star Saber's mid-size "Saber" robot retains the Brainmaster gimmick of the standard Brainmasters, and can combine with the V-Star ship in robot and jet modes to form Star Saber.
- GodmasterSupreme Commander(1989)
- Victory Saber giftset (includes Star Saber & Victory Leo)
- Star Saber is included in the Victory Saber giftset along withVictory Leo.
Masterpiece
- Star Saber's Masterpiece toy manages to incorporate all of his original gimmicks, including the Brainmaster... except instead of the smaller robot forming the face, the face is instead hidden in Saber's body until the small robot is inserted. Oh well.
Legacy
- Victory Saber(2022)
- The secondHasLabcrowdfunded figure forTransformersand the first version of the character produced byHasbro,"Autobot Star Saber"[3]is an incredibly cartoon-accurate figure composed of a Deluxe-sized "Autobot Saber"[3]spacecraft and the larger V-Star jet, which can combine to form a spaceship. The figure retains most—if not—all of the original features of the original toy, including the Brainmaster function, though the face is now deployed manually from the back of the Brain Robo rather than being deployed automatically when the chest door is closed.
- The project required a minimum of 11,000 backers forHasbroto produce, which was reached onSeptember 29,2021. If the figure reaches 14,000 backers, the gigantic V-Lock Cannon and 6Fire Blast effectswill be additionally included. The project's deadline occurs onOctober 10,2021to coincide withNew York Comic Con—a much shorter deadline than the one provided forUnicron.
Notes
- For years, Transformers fans have referred (and continue to refer) to the Brainmaster components of Star Saber, Blacker, Braver and Laster as "Yūki", "Riki", "Chie" and "Waza", as if they were proper names. These are, in fact, simply the Japanese wordsmeaning"courage", "strength", "intelligence" and "skill"; the Brains do not have proper names, and are simply known as "Brain of Courage", etc.
- Additionally, the Brains are also popularly but mistakenly known by a set of names that are the result ofmangledversions of the Japanese word above: "Yukio", "Sala" (from "chikara", another Japanese word for "strength" ), "Siet" and "Razou".
- They are the only "Masters" to have never appeared in the US as well as having no Decepticons.
- Following the trend in later Japanese Generation 1 series, the three combining Brainmasters have pretty uniform tech spec numbers. Like their opposites inVictory,Breastforce, they essentially have straight 8's, with a couple numbers slightly higher or lower to indicate their specialties, and all have totals in the neighborhood of 64.
