Synopsis

FollowingPerceptor's guidance, Team Megatron descends deep into the heart ofCybertronvia theLabyrinth of Tunnels, their journey made difficult by the constantly-shifting paths before them.Optimus Primalmuses to himself how much he has yet to learn about Cybertron after years in isolation, butGrimlockandMegatrongrow impatient. Perceptor warns that if they take a wrong turn, they risk being lost in the Labyrinth for millions of years. The tunnels shift once more, and Perceptor leads them in deeper.

In theWell of Sparks,Megatronusreappears before his doomsday device, which already bears theEnigma of Combinationand theMatrix of Leadership. His victory at hand, he places theRequiem Blasterinto the device, and it begins powering up, drawing the energy of all the Well's accruedsparks.A wave of energy streams down the hallway towards Perceptor's team, who become weakened as it takes effect and drains the power from their sparks. Perceptor reveals his readings showing that the effect has spread beyond Cybertron, and Transformers everywhere are being drained. Running out of time, the team slowly get to their feet and press forward.

As Megatronus watches with glee,Solus Prime's form begins to take shape. This comes to a sudden end, however, thanks to a shot from Megatron'sfusion cannon. While the formerDecepticonleader gives the others their orders, an enraged Megatronus shoots downWindblade, but she is barely saved from destruction by Primal. The guardian gets into a fistfight with Megatronus, whose arm is restricted by Grimlock's jaws. Megatron, however, continues to stare at the well as he "waits for the right moment", to Perceptor's confusion. Unable to pull the relics free from the machine, Perceptor watches as Solus begins to manifest once again. As Solus is confused by her current state and her violent surroundings, Megatron introduces himself and explains Megatronus's motivations, refusing to let himself or anyone else die for Solus's resurrection.

Seeing his lover before him, Megatronus frees himself and burns Windblade, Primal, Grimlock and Perceptor in massive columns of flame. As he approaches Solus, he turns back towards the others and prepares to finish them, only for Megatron to move into his way. Megatronus taunts Megatron, calling him a failure and a disgrace, but Megatron refuses to back down despite his weakness. Unfazed, Megatronus aims his flame blasters at Megatron, but the two are surprised by the sudden arrival of theUnicron-controlledRodimus Cron, who grows into a more powerful form.

Quotes

"Are we there yet?"

Grimlock.Repeatedly, at that.

"So many times over the eons, I have imagined what my first words to you would be. I confess...I still do not know."

Megatronuswants to make a good first (second?) impression.

"Don't you know when you play with gods...you die?"

Megatronusgets mad.

"Just give up already."
"Give up? You obviously have no idea who you are dealing with."
"I knowexactlywho I'm dealing with: afailure, unworthy of my name, and a disgrace to the Decepticons. Where were you when I manipulated the Combiners into warring with one another in order to bring the Enigma of Combination into play? And when the Titans returned, you did nothing but watch as I claimed the Matrix of Leadership and murdered your friend Optimus Prime. So what exactly makes you think you can stop me now? "
"Because I'm Megatron...and now you've pissed me off."

Megatronus's "Hannibal lecture" setsMegatronup for his big hero line.

"Well,nowit's a party. "

Megatronremarks on Rodimus's arrival.

Notes

Continuity notes

  • Perceptor's display shows Emissary atop Fortress Maximus, neither of whom have been seen since theTitans Returnepisode "All Things Must Pass".It also shows the survivingDinobots:Snarl, Swoop and Slug, still gathered around Sludge's corpse as they were in "Athenaeum Sanctorum".
  • Megatronus explains that he manipulated the Combiners into warring with each other to bring the Enigma of Combination into play, and resurrectedTrypticonto make the Matrix vulnerable, providing explanations for the events ofCombiner WarsandTitans Return. He also mentions his murder ofOptimus Primein "All Things Must Pass".

Errors

Continuity errors

  • Despite Perceptor's claim in "Consequences"that he was only able to download a small portion of the data from theAthenaeum Sanctorumbefore it was destroyed, he apparently has all the information he needs to plot out an exact map to the Well of Sparks through a maze of tunnels where the slightest mistake will doom the group.
  • In a display of improbable viewpoints that wouldmake the original cartoon proud,Perceptor somehow is able to pull up live video feeds of Emissary and the Dinobots with no clear explanation. While Emissary could conceivably have wandered close to some kind of security camera inside of Fortress Maximus, the Dinobots are out in the wilderness, and all four are clearly visible in the shot, so Perceptor hasn't hacked into any of their optical sensors.
  • The Dinobots also appear to have not moved away from Sludge's body at all in the many hours since he died. Everyone processes grief differently, we suppose.
  • Most of the protagonists already show signs of being severely weakened by Megatronus's device when it is first activated. Yet when they reach the Well, by which time Solus has started to take physical form, they seem none the worse for wear.
  • Megatron orders Windblade and Grimlock to help Perceptor remove the relics from the device while Primal fights Megatronus. Despite confirming the orders, Windblade and Grimlockimmediatelystart helping Primal fight Megatronus while Perceptor works on the device alone. Great leadership skills there, Megs.

Animation and technical errors

  • Megatron is missing the detailing on his "brow" for this entire episode.
  • When Megatron tells the team his plan, the subtitles say Primal's name as "Primo."
  • There's almost no facial transition whatsoever between Megatronus's happiness at seeing Solus and his anger when he turns back towards the others; he literally goes from smiling to furious in just two frames of animation.

Trivia

  • According to Windblade, Grimlock has asked "Are we there yet?" 418 times at the start of the episode. He then asks twice more afterwards...and 418 plus 2 equals...sigh.Blaze it.
  • Megatronus title-drops all three entries in thePrime Wars Trilogyduring his speech to Megatron at the end, proving the art of subtlety is long dead. By coincidence, this is the third straight instance of aPrime Wars Trilogycartoon featuring an obvious title-drop in itseighthepisode.
  • Rodimus Cron evolves from hisPower of the Primestoy's Nemesis Hot Rod form, which is the design he's used for the whole series thus far, into its larger Rodimus Unicronus form.
