Commercial/Japan

From Transformers Wiki

(thumbnail)
The toy battle of your childhood dreams.

The uniqueness of AmericanGeneration 1Transformers commercials helped the line become a cultural phenomenon in the U.S. By contrast,Takara's G1 commercials, or "CM"s, were considerably more generic. Commercials forFight! Super Robot Lifeform TransformersandFight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers 2010have a distinctive Gregorian style "Trans-for-mer" chant at the end of them, but there was not much else to set them apart from other mecha toy commercials. They made use of the same type of stop motion animation that was used not only in commercials for Takara's Transformers predecessorsMicro ChangeandDiaclonebut for various other mecha toys includingGundam,GoLion, and even as far back as 1975 forHimitsu Sentai Goranger's toyline. The stop motion style of commercial is still used by TakaraTomy as evidenced by the advertising forTransformers Animated.

Curiously,Fight! Super Robot Lifeform TransformersandFight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers 2010commercials (even some of those not re-using US commercial footage) made use of several variations of the UStheme songs, despite the fact that said theme songs were not used for the Japanese dubs of thecartoon.A few variants were even recorded specifically for the Japanese commercials, such as the one used in the first Airbots and Stuntrons ad. Later on,Beast WarsandBeast Wars Metalsads would also make use of the theme song from their American counterpart.

Historically, Takara's advertising strategy has been to cover the entire toyline in some way, shape or form. This has resulted in some commercials where the toys get the bum's rush, staying on screen just long enough to show off both modes. The Beast Era has several egregious examples, in particular one ad that covers Scuba, Tasmania Kid, Big Horn, Apache, Dirge, Thrust, Starscream, BB, Megastorm and all four Autorollers for a grand total of thirteen toys! The whole line philosophy has been maintained as recently as theCar Robotsline.

In addition to toy commercials, Takara has also advertised via promotional videos, which occasionally offered as magazine or DVD extras, that tease an upcoming series or give supplemental information. Commercials formusic singles and soundtracksfor the various series have also aired on TV, possibly as early asBeast Wars. And of course there's the commercials forBeast Warssausages.Really.We wouldn't lie to you.

  • Convoy & Megatron[3]- Edited-down version of the previous commercial.

Notes:This is the same desert in which the previous commercial took place. Whatever celestial body this desert is on, it's in very close proximity to a ringed planet. Galvatron's cannon blasts are marked by explosions occurring near Magnus, accompanied by laser blast sounds from thecartoon. There's also a lighting effect that seems to have an external source, rather than Galvatron's own light-up gimmick. Ultra Magnus's eyes light up red despite the toy not having that ability.
  • Ultra Magnus & Galvatron[13]- Edited down from the previous commercial.

  • Ultra Magnus & Galvatron 2[14]
Notes:Combines the animation from the U.S. Ultra Magnus and Galvatron commercial with toy footage from the first Japanese ad. The scene of Galvatron firing on Magnus has had a visual laser effect added to it.
