TheNintendo 3DSis a handheld gaming system released in2011developed byNintendo,and the successor to theNintendo DS.While it was more powerful than (and backwards compatible with) its predecessor; carried forward the extended feature set of the DSi; and had its own online eShop distribution platform for selling retail games, smaller digital-only titles, and re-releases of classic games; the system's real selling point was (as its name suggests) its 3D capabilities, able to display images in stereoscopic 3D without the need for players to wear special glasses...at least until the release of itsNintendo 2DSvariant, which stripped this feature out entirely. Other variants included theNew Nintendo 3DS,which gave the systems additional processing power, and larger-screenedXLversions of all of the above.

The 3DS was Nintendo's final dedicated handheld system, and was ultimately succeeded by the hybridNintendo Switchconsole in2017.
