The Transformers

  • Starscream(Decepticon Jet, 1984-1986 / 1990)
  • Takara ID number:22
  • Accessories:Left & right fists, 2 missile launchers, 2 "null-rays", 2 "cluster bombs", left & right wings, left & right tail fins, left & right tail wings, landing gear
  • Known designers:Kōjin Ōno(TakaraTomy)
Released in the first year of theoriginalTransformerstoyline,Starscream began life as "Jet Robo" from the JapaneseDiacloneline, transforming into a grey, red and blue F-15 Eagle fighter jet. To transform Starscream, one must essentially take most of his plane parts off and transform his body, then reattach most of plane parts on again, along with the addition of two blue fists. Owing to the modular nature of his design and the fact that it is impossible to store all the parts in either mode, it can be quite difficult to find an intact original set of this toy.
Starscream is armed with a pair of missile launchers that mount on his arms in robot mode, and under his wings in jet mode, with a pair of specialized projectiles for each. In jet mode, two short "cluster bomb"projectiles are fitted into the launchers to make them resemble the drop tanks a real F-15 carries, while in robot mode, they are replaced with the long barrels of Starscream'snull-rays.The originalDiacloneversion of the mold featured spring-loaded firing mechanisms in these launchers; while this feature was removed for theHasbrorelease of the toy, it was left intact for theTakaraversion, and all subsequent reissues.
TheDiacloneversion of the Starscream mold featured tailfins with solid tips and solid fists, and both these features carried over to the earliestTransformersreleases. Soon, however, theTransformersmold was modified to add hollow tips to the fins, and tabs to the insides of the fists to allow them to hold onto his arms tighter, resulting in a visible slit on either side of each one. These altered versions became the standard for all subsequent reissues of the mold. Like all his 1984 brethren, arubsignwas added to Starscream in 1985.
Presumably by mistake, the stats on Starscream, Skywarp, and Thundercracker'sTech Specswere switched around. Starscream's box was given Thundercracker's numbers, notably giving him a lower rank and speed that stood in contrast to the bio printed next to them.
The Italian release of Starscream (as "Astrum" ) byGiGput him in a generic "Distructor Planes" box, featuring names and tech specs for all three planes in the assortment.
Starscream's mold wasredecoedinto the concurrently-availableThundercrackerandSkywarp.It would later be redecoed again to makeSunstorm, andretooledintoDirge,Ramjet, andThrust.
Given his role as a major and popular character, Starscream himself would be reissued many times down the years, the first beingstill in his original packaging in Australiain 1990 (see below). Subsequent reissues had more distinctive presentation, and this article strives to list each one under its own header. He was available throughout the first three years of the original US line, up through 1986 despite the departure of nearly every other 1984 toy from store shelves that year.

  • Starscream(Classic Pretender, 1989)
  • Accessories:2-part Pretender shell, helmet, left & right wings, left & right "lasers" /tail wings, rifle
  • Known designers:Masakatsu Saito(concept artist)
The first new Starscream toy since the original brought the treacherous Air Commander back as aClassic Pretender. He still transforms into a grey, red and blue F-15 fighter jet, though his vehicle mode now borders on thesuper deformed. He is armed with a pair of blue lasers, which become his tail fins in jet mode.
Starscream's two-piecePretendershell resembles a human in a teal, grey and brown space armored suit with a removable helmet. The shell is armed with a large blue rifle. When Starscream is inside the shell, his removable grey wings store in holes on the shell's back, while the blue lasers get plugged into the sides of the large rifle.

  • Hero Set(Multi-pack, 1989)
  • Accessories:Left & right wings, left & right "lasers" /tail wings
Released exclusively in Japaninsteadof the individual Classic Pretender figures, rather than in addition to them, this giftset contained the "Legends" versions of Pretender Starscream and his fellow Classic Pretenders,Bumblebee,Jazz, andGrimlock. This version of Starscream featured a silver face, as opposed to the Hasbro version's black.
In Italy,GiGalso forewent releasing the individual Classic Pretenders, and instead released their own version of the Hero Set named "Set Commandos". • Turbo Jet with Action Master Starscream(Action Blaster Vehicle, 1990)
  • Accessories:Turbo Jet, rifle, 2 missiles, seatback/shield
  • Known designers:Masakatsu Saito(concept artist)
Released in the seventh and final year of the originalTransformersline (well, final in the US, anyway),Action MasterStarscream is a non-transforming 3¾-inch action figure based loosely on his cartooncharacter model, but using a color scheme derived from the Pretender toy. His construction is broadly similar to that used by theG.I. Joefigures of the time, having a swivel neck, shoulders and knees, plus ball-jointed hips attached via a steel rod internally secured by a rubber "o-ring". His hands have standard 3 mm holes which allow him to hold any other accessory in the Action Master line, plus his feet have holes in the bottom to secure him to larger vehicles. On top of that, the hole in his back is compatible with5 mm posts.
One of two toys in the "Action Blaster Vehicle" assortment, he came with theTurbo Jet,a small personal attack craft that Starscream can set astride like a motorcycle. The Turbo Jet rolls on three small wheels, and can transform into a gun emplacement.

  • ID number:22
  • Accessories:Left & right fists, 2 missile launchers, 2 null-rays, 2 cluster bombs, left & right wings, left & right tail fins, left & right tail wings, landing gear
The third exclusive redeco of the original Starscream toy released alongside the 2001 reissues, "Starscream Secret Version" was available through theLucky Drawcontest held in conjunction with the first edition ofTransformers Generations(with aSuper Collection FigureSkywarp figurine as second prize). The figure was limited to onlyfivepieces, making it one of the rarest officially-releasedTransformerstoys in the world, and to cap it off, the toy was not actually shown during the contest, hence its "Secret" moniker. Given its amazingly limited availability, it was not even known what the toy looked like until a picture of it appeared inTransformers Generations 2009 Volume 2,showing it as being primarily clear and colorless.

With my camouflaged wings, I'll appear to be merely a fuselage flying through the sky!
  • Starscream(Decepticon,1992)
  • Accessories:2 missile launchers, 2 missiles, left & right fists, left & right wings, left & right horizontal tail fins, left & right upright tail fins, front landing gear, "sound/light energy unit"
Part of the very first assortment ofGeneration 2product released just in time for the 1992 holiday season, Starscream's original toy wasredecoedinto a very bright white and light gray, with a salmon torso. His original missile launchers have been replaced with a new pair of spring-loaded missile launchers andlong missiles;the launcher and missile molds were also used for his assortment-mateRamjet.
Also new to this version is a large electronic "sound/light energy unit" in a kinda engine-gun-like shape (a mold also used by Ramjet). Powered by a pair of watch batteries, pressing the two soft-plastic buttons up front activates flashing red lights and sound effects. The left button makes machinegun noises as long as you hold it down, while the right starts an unstoppable jet-noise sequence of rising then falling pitch; you can activate the machinegun sounds in the middle of it, and the jet noises will resume as soon as you release the gun button. This assembly doesn't really go anywhere in robot mode, but attaches to the back end of his jet mode thanks to a trio of pegs that wereadded to his tooling.
This version of the mold would have been used to makeGeneration 2Blackout.

Transforms from backstabber to backpack and back!
  • Advanced Tactical Bomber Megatron(Decepticon, 1995)
  • Accessories:12 missiles, 2 missile launchers
A planned-but-more-or-less-canceled redeco ofGeneration 2Dreadwing,"Advanced Tactical Bomber"Megatronwould have come with Starscream, a redeco of Dreadwing's partnerSmokescreen. The pair can combine into the "flying wing" Advanced Tactical Bomber, while Starscream can detach to become a smaller solo jet, leaving Megatron to transform into a treaded tank mode. According the Toy Fair 1995 Transformers presentation, the toy's missiles are intended to glow in the dark.
This figure was only released to test markets in Ohio, USA in very limited quantities. It was never available as a wide release. So yeah, notexactlycanceled, but good luck obtaining one.
This toy's deco was modified to makeBeast WarsBBandStarscreamout of the same mold-set. Importantly, thisStarscream has light gray plastic rather thanBeast Wars IIStarscream's silver plastic, as well as an unpainted gray head with a blue faceplate whereBeast Wars IIhas a painted-black helmet with silver faceplate, and of course, different stickers between the two. The missiles in the set are alsoretooledwith a different, pointier back-end, indicating the launchers' interiors were also retooled; this tooling is however completely different from the retooling done to each individual later use of the mold, meaningnoneof the missiles are interchangeable between them.

Machine Wars

  • Starscream(Ultra, 1997)
    • Accessories:10 missiles
Starscream'sMachine Warsincarnation is a redeco of thePredatorSkyquake, transforming into a large bomber jet based vaguely upon an SR-71 Blackbird. The main feature of the toy is its "carpet bombing" gimmick; each wing contains a drum that holds up to four missiles, which drop out as the drum is rotated. A further two missiles can also store on each wing, and one on each side of his fuselage, but while Skyquake came with enough missiles to fill all these ports, Starscream only comes with ten. The short length of the missiles necessary for this gimmick to function means that Starscream does not come with Skyquake's firing missile launcher, since the missiles are shorter thanUS safety standardsallow, although it is incorrectly shown on his packaging. Starscream also lacks Skyquake'sMegavisorgimmick. The figure also features a barely noticeable yet enormous Decepticon symbol on thetop of the planerendered in black paint on black plastic.
Starscream is known to have come with either pale grey missiles, better fitting his new color scheme, or bright green missiles like Skyquake's.
This mold was later redecoed to makeKing Atlas. The toydoublesas theStarscream dronesinWings Universeand asan unnamed characterin2019 IDW continuity.

Transtech

Obscure both by design and by accident
  • Starscream
Starscream would have been made available in the abortedTranstechseries in 2001. Control art and earlyPrototypeimages have surfaced, showing that the toy would have been at the Deluxe scale and featured internal lighting mechanisms that changed color depending on its mode. The toy is clearly a homage to hisMachine Warsbody, which at the time ofTranstech'sintended release would have been the last form Starscream had inhabited in American markets.
In 2008, this design would berepurposedas theTransTechuniverse'sStarscream.
This design was revived byDraxhall Jumpwhen they were contracted to create theMarvelMegamorphsline for Toy Biz; Starscream ultimately became theIron Mantoy.

The toy'sbiomakes a rare fictional reference toMachine Wars, describingthe eventsof the series in the past tense.

  • Starscream(2003)
    • Accessories:Left & right fists, 2 missile launchers, 2 null-rays, 2 cluster bombs, left & right wings, left & right tail fins, left & right tail wings, landing gear
The first reissue of the original Starscream toy in North America since the Generation 1 toyline reached its end, this "Commemorative Series"edition of the figure was aToys "R" Usexclusive. It featured functional missile launchers for the first time on a Hasbro version of the toy, but because the launchers now worked, both sets of missiles had to be lengthenedfor safety reasons. This didn't work outsobadly with the null-rays, but the cluster bombs just wound up lookingstupid.

    • Accessories:Left & right fists, 2 missile launchers, 2 null-rays, 2 cluster bombs, left & right wings, left & right tail fins, left & right tail wings, landing gear, two-piece gun mode Megatron,Optimus Primefist
As another in an increasingly large number of reissues of the original Generation 1 Starscream toy, this entry in the Japanese-exclusiveThe Transformers Collectionline of reissues decided to mix things up by giving the figure a full-scale redeco intoshow-accuratecolors. His blue plastic became much lighter, while his cockpit was made bright orange, and even featured new grey paint applications running across it. Several of his stickers were replaced with new, show-accurate paint applications, including new wing-stripes andtampographedDecepticon symbols on his wings and nosecone (of course, Starscream didn't have one on his nosecone in the cartoon, so it isn't perfect!).
Starscream's fists were remolded with new circular peg-holes so he could wield his missile launchers in his hands, which also worked in conjunction with a new tab on the fists' undersides to allow him to hold his new accessory: Megatron in gun mode. This miniature Megatron splits into two pieces at the handle, with each half plugging into the new hole and tab added to each of Starscream's fists. Megatron can also plug into Starscream's underside in jet mode, replicating the time the characters linked up in this fashion in the cartoon episode, "S.O.S. Dinobots".The set also came with a remolded fist for the original Optimus Prime toy, allowing him to hold the Megatron accessory, and a DVD featuring a trailer for the upcoming Playstation 2 video gameThe Transformersand Japanese toycommercialsfor Optimus Prime,Rodimus PrimeandChromedome.

  • Starscream(2003)
    • ID number:GTF-03
    • Accessories:Left & right fists, 2 missile launchers/cluster bombs, left & right wings, left & right tailfins
Standing at only two inches tall,Smallest Transforming TransformersStarscream is averysmall-scale simplification of the original Starscream toy. It retains a surprising amount of the larger toy's functionality and accessories, except its tail fins and wings are combined into single pieces, and his null-rays and landing gear are left out.
This mold was, of course, redecoed intoSmallest Transformingversions of Skywarp and Thundercracker, and retooled into Thrust.

  • Starscream(2004)
  • ID number:RM-12
  • Release date:August 5,2004
  • Accessories:2 null-rays, 2 missile pods
Part of the second wave of Takara'sRobotmasterstoys, Starscream is a re-imagining of the original Generation 1 figure, retaining its basictransformation scheme, but designed to be closer to the animation model, with greater articulation and integrated parts that do not require detachment during transformation. The only pieces that now need to be removed are Starscream's null-ray rifles, which move from his wings to his arms. He has three peg-holes on each arm, allowing the null-rays to be mounted on his shoulders, on his forearms, or in his fists. These holes are also designed to accommodate the generic spring-loaded missile launcher weapon included withRobotmastersG1 Convoy,Beast ConvoyandBeast Megatron.
Starscream came with two "missile pods" based on weapons Starscream used but once, in the Generation 1 cartoon episode "Fire on the Mountain".These chromed accessories plug into the square holes in Starscream's chest, and feature opening covers that reveal (non-firing) missiles within.
This mold was redecoed intoRobotmastersSkywarpandThundercracker.

  • ID number:RM-12
  • Accessories:2 null-rays, 2 missile pods, Jamming Trident
Available only via mail-order throughFigure ŌNo. 80, the "Limited Black Version" of Starscream is just that: a straightblack redecoof the Starscream toy, replacing the original toy's blue, red and the grey of his wings with black. He comes with all his original accessories, as well as a gold-chromed version of the "Jamming Trident"solitariumweapon that came withWingstun.

Masterpiece

(thumbnail)
And the fandom complained (and rejoiced).
The second figure designed inTakara'sMasterpieceline, this highly-detailed version of Starscream is the "odd man out" of the series, eschewing the slavish cartoon-accuracy of the otherMasterpiecefigures in favor of creating as accurate an F-15 Eagle alternate mode as possible, with a somewhat more stylized robot mode. As it happens, this Starscream does not transform into a standardF-15 Eagle, rather he transforms into anF-15E Strike Eagle;with the dead giveaways being in the conformal fuel tanks on the fuselage, darker aircraft camouflage, and the placement of the real-world-styled decals. The toy features several unobtrusive built-in gimmicks, includingnumerousopening panels on his jet mode surface (highlighting the attention this mode received), flip-up panels in his chest that reveal missile racks based on the weapons seen in the Generation 1 episode "Fire on the Mountain", and a rotating face that allows Starscream to switch his expression from stony-faced to sneering. Owners of the toy are given quite a few customization options, as Starscream comes with an extensive sheet of sticker decals, including variously sized Decepticon symbols, and squadron numbers and markings, including one ofWaspinator!
In addition to his built-in features, Starscream comes with several accessories. He is armed with both his traditional null-ray rifles, but his familiar cluster bombs are replaced with a rack of (slightly inaccurate) Sidewinder missiles. He also comes with a clip that mounts under his nosecone, allowing him to hold the Megatron pistol accessory that came with20th AnniversaryOptimus Primein emulation of the way the characters linked up in "S.O.S. Dinobots", and asmall figurineofDoctor Arkeville, his partner in crime from several first-season episodes of the Generation 1 cartoon, which can fit in his cockpit. Finally, he includes a two-piece, reconfigurable display base that allows the figure to be posed in mid-flight in either jet or robot mode, and can store Starscream's accessories while they are not in use.Control artforMasterpieceStarscream which showed the figure wearing hisCrown of Leadership(as seen in the coronation scene of the original animated movie) and a pair of otherwise-pointless flip-out notches in the finished toy's shoulders indicated that Takara planned for a set of clip-on coronation gear. Ultimately, it would takesix yearsbefore these accessories were finally released.
MasterpieceStarscream's creation was overseen by famed Japanese mecha designerShōji Kawamori, who was particularly intent on hiding the robot-mode details on the underside of the fighter mode. The first prototype for the figure was essentially an upgraded, more complex version of the original toy, with much more accurate robot and jet modes, but Kawamori's desire to avoid simply making a new version of an old toy saw the figure go through a major redesign into its finished form. Perhaps the most notable change was the repositioning of Starscream's tail-fin structures from his legs to his hips, with the intent of creating the feel of a samurai wearing a pair of swords at his waist (presumably, if somewhat oddly, based on the then-recentArmadaandEnergoncartoons' portrayal of theirStarscreamas a noble swordsman). Even so, Kawamori was still unhappy with the amount of robotic parts visible underneath the plane, but conceded that too many changes would essentially not make the toy look like Starscream in robot mode. In this pursuit of realism, the most visible concession to the design was the abandonment of his traditional color scheme (which is much closer to a standard F-15's color scheme), replaced with an all-over greenish-tinged grey—a color scheme that is more accurate to the real-world version of the toy'sF-15E Strike Eaglevehicle mode.
This mold was later retooled into theMasterpieceversions ofSkywarpandThundercracker, and was recolored by Hasbro into amore cartoon-accurate Starscream color schemereleased under theirClassicsline as well as redecoed into Hasbro's version of MasterpieceSkywarpunder theUniverseline. It was also redecoed and retooled to create the eleventhMasterpiecefigure,Starscream.
Though not stated on the package, Starscream is in fact a 1/60 scale F-15. The same scale used by many popular Japanese mecha toys including Kawamori's ownMacrossValkyries. Coincidence?

Oh sure. Make a Transformer from the line that has some of the most complex figures ever cast ENTIRELY out of translucent plastic. Great idea.
  • Starscream Ghost Version(2010)
    • ID number:MP-3G
    • Accessories:2 null-rays, 2 missile racks,Doctor Arkevillepilot figurine, gun clip, two-piece display stand
Cast almost entirely in translucent plastic, this "Ghost Version"Masterpiecefigure is yet another callback to Starscream's spectral tenure from the Generation 1 cartoon. When purchased frome-HOBBY,buyers received anexclusive comicpackaged with the figure. Surprisingly, Ghost Starscream comes with the same sticker sheet as the original MP-3 Starscream, only with the numbering designation changed.
Like Gentei Ghost Starscream, Masterpiece Ghost Starscream is cast in light purple translucent plastic instead of just colorless clear plastic like the G1 Ghost Starscream figure.
Extremecaution is needed while transforming/posing this toy: Several parts of him (especially the wing connectors) are prone to breakage.
This figure was also released inAustralia,as anexclusivethroughToys "R" Us,in late2010.

  • Starscream[1](March 31,2012)
    • ID number:MP-11
    • Accessories:Crown, pauldrons (left and right), cape, 2 null-rays, hologram pilot figurine
Following up on the original plan for theMasterpieceStarscream figure six years after the fact, MP-11 decks Screamer out in his coronation gear fromThe Transformers: The Movie, including crown, twin shoulder pads, and a sculpted plastic cape (rather than a fabric one). In addition to his new accessories—which also include a new hologram pilot figure in place of Doctor Arkeville—Starscream features some extensive retooling to wind hisMasterpiecedesign away from Kawamori's original, less Generation 1-accurate look, with most of the robot mode being newly tooled parts, including chunkier legs that now incorporate his tail-fins,retooledshoulders and wingtips that no longer curve into one another, a new head (with collapsible head fins), new heel spurs that flip out for added support in robot mode, and re-engineered null-rays attached to extending armatures that mean they no longer have to beremovedfor transformation. Despite the similarity to the original MP-3 prototype, the retooled parts are in fact a whole new design heavily based on the original concept. This new version of the mold was redecoed intoSunstormand (without the coronation gear) into Hasbro'sThundercracker,SkywarpandAcid Storm. It was later retooled into theConeheadsRamjet,ThrustandDirge, although the mold by that point had noticeablydeteriorated, resulting in numerous quality control issues.
2013 saw a China-only re-release of MP-11 Starscream. While announced as the same as the original, it featured some changes. Chief among them is the head is no longer molded in light gray plastic painted over gloss black and dark metallic gray (for the face) but it's molded in a more cartoon accurate dark gray (for the helmet) and a lighter metallic gray for the face. This release also features the nosecone molded in light gray plastic rather than molded in blue and then painted over light gray. The black tabs on the top of the jet are now the same grey as the rest of the jet. It also included a collector's coin like the original Asian (excluding Japan) release.
The figure was reissued once more, this time in Japan, in April 2017 along with several other toys in the line to coincide with the release of the then upcoming MP36 Megatron and features a "Good design award" mark on the box.
This version was released by Hasbro underGenerationsco-branding (see next entry just below).

  • Starscream(2015)
    • ID number:MP-07
    • Accessories:2 null-rays, 2 missile racks, hologram pilot figurine, two-piece display stand, gun clip
The Hasbro version ofMP-11differs from the Takara release in a toy-accurate blue nose cone, borders around the Decepticon logo, a slightly different grey plastic, the tabs of the top of the jet are in grey (like the second release of MP-11) and is missing the coronation gear. However, he does come with the stand from previous Masterpiece Seekers and two racks of missiles that can peg onto the bottom of his wings in place of the null-rays. Neither the box nor the instructions mention this, but he comes with the gray clip that can hold the Megatron gun that came with otherMasterpiecefigures, such as MP-1 Optimus Prime or MP-13 Soundwave. Official images, including the box art, shows the top of the wings mis-transformed in robot mode.
Despite still using the numbering system of Hasbro'sMasterpieceline begun in 2013, Starscream wasco-brandedas part of theGenerationsline. He was available exclusively atToys "R" Usstores in the US, Australia, and Canada.

    • Accessories:5 alternate faces, Gun modeMegatron,5effect parts,2-part stand base, stand arm, stand cradle, pincer, drill, asteroid fragment
The third iteration ofMasterpieceStarscream features more cartoon-accurate proportions compared to previous releases. He can also convert into his Gerwalk-styled "Alternate Transformation" while in Jet mode. Popular toy magazineFigure Kingprofiled this new cartoon/Anime accurate version in issue #242.
AHobby Magazineissue revealed that his chest was redesigned during the prototype's production, allowing the parts to correctly sit flush.
For accessories, he comes with 5 alternate faces, various effect parts and, like many other newerMasterpiecefigures, a bunch of accessories referring to determinate appearances of the character in the G1 cartoon, such asMegatronin gun mode (the first time such an accessory has been included with aMasterpieceStarscream), the drill arm seen in "The Core"and the pincer he used in"Cosmic Rust"to remove the asteroid fragment from Megatron's arm, alongside said asteroid fragment. He also comes with a 2-piece stand with an adaptable arm, a purple redeco of the one that came withDinobot, plus a specific cradle adapter to attach Starscream in Gerwalk mode to the stand. Numerous cases of hairline cracks have been reported at the wrist joints and tailfin joints.
Upon the announcement of the second version ofMasterpieceSkywarp,a competition for Starscream's add-on kit was revealed; giving him his iconic crown and cape fromThe Transformers: The Movie. Those who purchased Starscream, Skywarp, andThundercrackercould snip off a box flap of each figure, mail them in and receive the Coronation set for free. This was only available to those who lived in Japan, but since each box flap had a unique code, there was no household limit to how many one could redeem.
MasterpieceStarscream Ver. 2.0 was redecoed into theTakaraTomy MallexclusiveThundercracker.

Fear my extra-long null-rays!!!
  • Starscream(Deluxe, 2006)
    • Accessories:2 null-ray cannons (left and right), 2 missiles
Like the other entries in theClassicsseries, Starscream is a faithful "modernizing" of his original Generation 1 form, updating his original toy with modern standards of toy engineering, transformation, sculpting detail and articulation (not dissimilar in principle from hisRobotmastersincarnation, but with less of an adherence to his cartooncharacter model). Sharing many design elements with hisMasterpiecetoy, Starscream still transforms into an F-15 Eagle, but has the nose of anF-14 Tomcatfighter jet. His color scheme is, of course, based on the traditional Starscream palette, but seems to owe its new layout tothe original F-15 prototype.
As usual, Starscream is armed with his familiar null-rays, which can mount under his wings, on his shoulders, or in his fists, and fire spring-loaded projectiles. The large size of his null-rays (necessaryfor safety reasons) restrict his arm movement somewhat in robot mode, as they bump into his wings. Like allClassicsfigures, he has a heat-activated rubsign on his left wing. Certain parts of Starscream, like his back panel and tailfin assemblies, are made of unusually rigid gray plastic that is slightly prone to cracking or breaking, and should be handled with care.
Later versionsof Starscream saw aretoolin the jet intake area, which involved the slope of his shoulders being decreased, and a fifth small rectangle being added to the vertical area. This version of Starscream is the harder to find of the two, but was used as the basis for all subsequent redecos and retools. Despite its age, the mold has been frequently reused for various Seeker characters in the years since its first use, though its last few uses have exhibited visible signs of mold degredation.

Henkei! Henkei!Starscream Ghost Version

Wait, you say theHasbroversion is the slavishly 'toon-accurate one? Your credibility is on shaky ground, Wiki.
  • Masterpiece Starscream(2007, 2008)
    • Accessories:2 null-rays, 2 missile racks, Doctor Arkeville pilot figurine, gun clip, display stand
AWalmartexclusive, Hasbro's Masterpiece Starscream is anextensiveredeco of the previous year'sMasterpiecefigure from Takara, recolored to resemble the character's animation model, down to the orange canopy and the silver nosecone, although the cartoon-accurate silver paint on the nosecone actually coverstoy-accurate blue plastic.[2]In an effort to bring out detail in the sculpt, he has also been given an extensive paint wash to bring out his panel lines. His colors were not the only thing changed, however; the tips of his vertical stabilizers were shortened and rounded, and the plastics used overall have greater resilience to impact and damage than the fragile Japanese release.
Starscream includes the same accessories as the Takara version of the toy, including a two-piece display stand, null-rays, sidewinder missiles, a small figurine of Doctor Arkeville (which now has the correct skin color), and a clip to hold 20th Anniversary Optimus Prime's Megatron gun while in jet mode. Starscream was finally given the correct tech spec stats he was originally supposed to have back in 1984 for this release, which had been mistakenly given to Skywarp instead.
Takara got in on the act the following year when they released Hasbro's version of Masterpiece Starscream as a "USA Edition",adding a Japanese sticker to the HasbroClassicspackaging. This version of the toy was not without a few changes: the original mold for the tail fins was used, an extra Decepticon symbol was added to Starscream's nosecone (which was present on his original toy, but not his animation model), and his black "scorch mark"paint operationswere dialed back, and those that remained were switched to a lighter gray.

Based on the Seekers'Cybertronianforms as seen in theDreamwavecomic seriesThe War Within, this version of Starscream transforms into Cybertronian "tetrajet", as designed byDon Figueroa. As aTitaniumfigure, Starscream is made in large part from die-cast metal, and comes with the generic display stand shared by all of the 6 "" Cybertron Heroes ", with a unique removable nameplate.

Sportscream? Shoescream? So many possible nicknames...
  • Starscream featuring Nike Free 7.0(unreleased)
    • Accessories:Gun
This red and black redeco of theSports LabelMegatronfigure (itself a retool of theSports LabelOptimus Prime) appeared on eBay in mid-2007, identified by the auctioneer as Starscream. More pictures followed from a different source a month later, but after that, this strange little redeco quietly vanished, never released, and never even officiallyacknowledgedbyTakaraTomy. Was it aknock-off,or an abandoned official product? We may never know.
As a redeco of the one communal mold used for all theSports Labeltoys, Starscream, if that's who he really was, would have transformed into an undersized Nike sneaker with real fabric shoelaces, and would have been armed with a modular two-piece gun that split and stored inside each half of the large sneaker "shell" that made up a big chunk of his alternate mode.
Your bargaining posture is highly dubious.

Proceed on your way to oblivion.

A new series of reissues means a new release of the original Generation 1 Starscream figure, and Takara'sEncoreseries proved no different. This edition of the figure featured no extra accessories, with its notable change from past versions being the body color being more of a whiteish grey color instead of the metallic grey of the original 1984 version, a pale yellow window instead of dark gray, and the inclusion oftampographedDecepticon insignias on its wings and nosecone, rather than stickers (similar to theTransformers Collectionreissue before it but not flipped like the animation and metallic purple and silver instead of glossy purple and white). The sculpted copyright date is still theCommemorative Seriesrelease.

Available only as a mail-away exclusive offered throughTransformers Generations 2009 Volume 2that was released in November 2009, this redeco of Starscream is the second in the character's history to pay homage to his time as a ghost in the third season of the Generation 1 cartoon by casting him almost entirely in traslucent colored plastic. Parts of the figure made in softer plastic, like his thighs, remain opaque.
Starscream Ghost Version uses the altered version of theClassicsStarscream mold that originated with ClassicsSkywarpand was last seen withAcid Storm(down to the 2006 copyright date stamped on it), rather than the modified version first used onUniverseStarscream and the iterations that followed (see below). Yep, he's still feelin' good in the stripes.
  • Starscream(Deluxe Class, 2009)
    • Series:Generation 1 Series
    • Accessories:Left & right missile launchers, 2 missiles
The secondUniverseStarscream toy is a redeco ofClassicsStarscream, with a considerably lighter gray base color, more vibrant red paint, his face painted in dark gray compared toClassicsStarscream's flat gray plastic color for the face and a deco more faithful to Starscream's original Generation 1 toy, very similar to theHenkei! Henkei!release.
Several minor changes were made to the sculpt for this release: his launcher pegs were widened, and the peg-holes for them on his shoulders and wings were modified in order to accommodate them. His air intakes were further modified (on top of the changes made to the mold forClassicsSkywarp) so that the bottom-most rectangle goes completely across the air intake's surface rather than just the center.
The figure is reported to suffer from heavy quality control issues, most commonly mentioned are the joints and hinges being incredibly weak. As a result, Starscream's wings are difficult to keep in place in robot mode. The elbows, which previously snapped into place when articulated, now slide freely, and the entire hip joint system can be shifted out of alignment.
This modified version of the mold was used forHenkei! Henkei!SkywarpandThundercracker.

The first transformable Starscream toy not to turn into a jet,AlternityStarscream transforms into a licensed 1:32 scaleMitsuoka Orochi.Like the other toys in the line, he featuresdie-castmetal parts and rubber tires, as well as an opening hood, trunk and doors. This is also the onlyAlternitymold to featurea fake kibble chest.
In car mode, small wings aresupposed tobe able to flip out from under Starscream's rear wheels, giving him the appearance of a flying car. Unfortunately, thisgimmicksuffers from a rather nastydesign flaw:there is simply not enough clearance under the car for the wheels to be able to pass and hinge through, and attempting to do so will result in the plastic reinforcement struts underneathdeforming the rims and chipping the tires. His door panels also tend to detach from theirball jointsvery easily.
This mold, with a different head sculpt, was also used to make the simultaneously releasedAlternitySkywarp, and laterThundercrackerandBanzai Tronas well.

Released in the first wave of the2010Transformerstoyline'sReveal the ShieldLegends Classtoys, Starscream is a new sculpt based on his Generation 1 jet appearance with many fuselage details borrowed from theMasterpiece version. This is the first Starscream in many years to attempt an entirely new transformation for him, with the arms now forming the rear of the jet and the legs folding under the wings. Amusingly, he hastwocockpits, with the one that is actually part of his jet mode foldingright behindthefakeone on his chest in robot mode. Starscream also sports a heat-sensitiverubsignon his starboard (right) wing.
Early specimens of the toy released in Asia and at United States retail feature an unpainted gray-plastic helmet, a comparatively rarevariant. This variant is the one featured in the Hasbrostock photography, although the stock photo depicting the figure inEuropean packaginghas the more common black helmet, as this was the only version ever available at European retail.
The "Reveal the Shield" Legends figures saw exceedingly limited release at large-scale retail chains in the US. Throughout 2011, they eventually started appearing in discount stores like Ross, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and Tuesday Morning, with perhaps the largest and most consistent outlet being Five Below stores.

Starscream features numerous 5mm peg-holes, such as his hands, forearms, lower legs, and wing undersides.
In an undocumented feature, Starscream's tail-fin is attached via a 5 mm post on its underside, and can be detached to reveal three additional peg-holes, with two of these peg-holes being just the right distance to accommodate the two pegs found on the underside of the combined assault cannons/rifle, with the tail-fin pegging on the rifle's top peg-hole. This allows the weapon to mount on top of the vehicle mode, and store on his back in robot mode.

Blasters not included. No, seriously, they're not.
  • Starscream(Legion Class, 2014/2017)
Another release of theReveal the ShieldLegends Class sculpt, this time as an odd mish-mash of prior releases. The tooling is identical to the 2012 release's running change variant, with the retooled hands and holes inside his wings compatible withCyberverse3mmpegs, while the deco is nigh-identical theChroniclerelease, with the fully-black hemlet making for a weird-looking jet-mode nosecone. The toy also now sports a large "CE" mark on the inside of one of the tailfins and number on the inner right leg, declaring the toy meets European product safety requirements. A latervariantreplaced the purple Decepticon insignia with black versions.
Bizarrely, thepackage artis lifted directly from theGenerationsLegends Class Starscream/Waspinator two-pack's packaging, whereas thestock photosdepicted on the back of the packaging are taken fromReveal the ShieldStarscream's packaging and only slightly altered, advertising a "Reveal the Shield"rubsigngimmickthe toy doesn't actually have. Meanwhile, Hasbro's official stock photos provided to online retailers (including an in-packaging photo) depict the toy with the null-rays that came with the running change variant of the sculpt's 2012 release, even though the actual toy doesn't include the weapons.
Legion Class Starscream has been found at Family Dollar and Dollar General stores in the United States. The later version was also released at general retail in Australia, New Zealand, and Europe. This figure was re-released in 2017 in a minor variant of the 2014 version's packaging (including the original product code number and barcode) that now lacked the reference to the non-existing "Reveal the Shield" gimmick.
LikeBumblebeeandOptimus Prime, the black insignia variant of the toy ended up being dumped to some hobby shop dealers in Asia, and even returned to discount stores like Five Below and 99 Cents Only in the US in 2020.

Part of Wave 1 ofConstruct-BotsScouts, Starscream can transform into a jet. He has a paint error on his head, with his eyes colored blue instead of red. Also, only the left 1/3 of his helmet painted its proper black, with the rest being left in unpainted gray. Rarely 2/3 of it is black, and if you're lucky, the whole head might be black! Hallelujah!

  • Starscream(Action Figure, 2014)
    • Pieces:9
    • Accessories:Wing-pack
Part of the first wave ofTransformersHero Mashersbasic Action Figures, Starscream is a non-transforming action figure with ratchet-joints, about six inches tall. He has multiple peg-holes all over that can be used to mount anyHero Mashersaccessory. As a first-wave figure, he has extra ankle articulation that is not present in later waves (a cut that was made to allHero Masherslines, not just theTransformers-branded ones).
He is designed with a removable head, forearms, thighs, and lower legs, all of which use the same clip-peg/hole joint. This means his pieces can be swapped around in any order, as well as swapped with any otherHero Mashersfigure... which includes figures fromMarvel Comics,Star Wars, andJurassic World, meaning you can make some pretty freaky combinations.
Rather than coming with a (nominally) hand-held weapon accessory, Starscream comes with a wing-pack. Of course, being aHero Masherspiece, it can be attached anywhere, including being hand-held, and the wings have multiple gun barrels on them, so have a blast.
His right forearm wasredecoedto makeSkywarp's arm in theBattle Upgrade Megatronset.
Starscream's torso sculpt is noticeably similar to that of theTitan GuardianStarscream released atSan Diego Comic-Conin2013.

Undocumented in the instructions and as shown in the packaging art, Starscream's rifles can be attached underneath his wings and his robot mode arms.
Unfortunately, the figure did not get distribution in the United States, but has been reported showing up in Asian markets and was also solicited to South America. Toy importers did stock this series in a limited capacity and they sold out quickly in 2015 and effectively disappeared at that time. In 2016, the Cyber Battalion Starscream figure (along withCyber BattalionOptimus Prime and Bumblebee) saw release in the Universal Studios Theme Park, and finally ended up being turned into a Walgreens exclusive.

He also features some markings on his jet mode: an Autobot kill count on the right side of the cockpit, and a Decepticon symbol with the number "D-22" (a reference to Starscream's Japanese ID number). Starscream can also form the torso ofan unnamed combinerusing any selection ofCombiner Wars-style Deluxe Class figures as limbs. His instructions andTakaraTomystock photos depict him with thePower of the PrimesDeluxe Class figures from Wave 1. He also includes Prime Armor that can hold aPrime Master(and by extension, aTitan Master,Enigma,orMatrix core) and can turn into feet for said unnamed combiner. The silhouette of Starscream's torso mode appears to homage the robot mode of anotherStarscream.Like all the other Voyager Class figures, Starscream includes an Enigma of Combination (dubbed theSeeker Enigma), based on a Prime Master, which can attach to Starscream via the previously mentioned Prime Armor or the combined mode chest, which can also facilitate the other previously mentioned objects.
Though designated for a first quarter 2018 release, Starscream's wave reached U.S. store shelves in December 2017.
There are several reports of the peg that connects the wings often refusing to connect well. In 2018, a running change was made in the re-release of the toy: the peg that connects between the wings and the robot back has been retooled to connect firmly. The only way to identify this running change is the code "73101" stamped onto the box.
Starscream was later retooled intoElita-1.

Unlike other Alpha Class figures with Bravo Class counterparts, Starscream has completely different engineering and sculpting, rather than being an upscale of the smaller toy. He includes two Null-rays that can attach to his shoulders. He requires mild assembly out of box, as his wings need to be attached to his fuselage.
The figure is rather back heavy and lacks proper heels, so his robot mode is very unstable and hard to make stand upright.

    • Hidden message code:NULLRAY
    • Accessories:2 "HPINull-RayLaser Launchers "
Part of the second wave ofSiegeVoyager Class figures, Starscream transforms from a heavily G1-inspired robot into a Cybertronian 'tetrajet' based on theSeekers'appearance in "More than Meets the Eye, Part 1",although the jet mode hasthe robot-mode legspretty much hisentire robot bodysticking out from the undercarriage. He includes two "HPI Null-Ray Laser Launchers," which can mount on his upper arms or under the wings in jet mode (or in any other 5 mm port, really). As part of theSiegeC.O.M.B.A.T. System,Starscream has 5 mm ports on his biceps, forearms, shins, under his feet (vehicle-mode thrusters), and wings. The 3 mm pegs on his shins, forearms, left bicep, and the tips of his null-rays can accommodate effects parts (sold separately). Similar to his wavemateSoundwave,Starscream is absolutelyslatheredin battle damage paint — it's heavily present on his legs, chest, forearms, and theentiretyof his jet form.
Like the rest ofSiege, his robot mode focuses on articulation, with double-jointed elbows, knees that bend at nearly 180 degrees, ankle rockers, and especially waist articulation being notable articulation points for a Starscream toy. As an interesting design addition, he also has spring-loaded panels in his lower legs to avoid hollow gaps when viewed from the back. As a rather heavy shellformer, Starscream can easily be separated into both a wingless robot mode and a nearly complete tetrajet via a single friction hinge.
Speaking of friction hinges, the initial release of Starscream suffers from a production flaw: his robot-mode chest easily pops off during transformation as a result of a late design change that removed a pin from the chest without adjusting plastic tolerances. Said initial releases also use the live-action "angry eyes" design for his Decepticon insignia. One or both errors were corrected for later wave shipments; both were fixed by the time the figure shipped again with Voyager ClassSpringer. While the pin wasn't added back in, the plastic used for the grey strut the chest piece attaches to uses a stiffer plastic that is less likely to cause it to pop off.
Amusingly, the panel on his instruction sheet that demonstrates where to attach C.O.M.B.A.T. weapons depicts him mistransformed, with his left forearm opened along the transformation hinge. He is also slightly mistransformed in-package, with his arms rather adorably left unextended and the panel behind the head not being locked in place between the shoulder pylons.
The original figure eventually became a notorious shelfwarmer, due to him being reissued in the third wave and coincidentally around the time that theEarthrisefigure was revealed at NYCC 2019.

No, I'm not theother guy.
  • Starscream(Voyager Class,2020)
    • Hasbro ID number:WFC-E9
    • TakaraTomy ID Number:ER-05
    • TakaraTomy release date:June 27,2020
    • Accessories:2null-rays
Released as part of theEarthriseVoyager Class lineup, this version of Starscream is a cartoon-accurate mold. He transforms into an F-15 jet based on his traditional alternate mode and features a pair of G1-accurate null-rays. His design and transformation scheme is heavily based on his2006Classicsfigurewhile adding points of articulation the earlier figure did not have such as pivoting ankles, a more expressive ball-jointed head, and hinges that allow the wings to fold backward in robot mode.
The stock renders have some minor differences from the prototype seen at New York Comic Con. The renders depict the section of his chest that covers part of his cockpit as being unpainted red. At the same time, the prototype has it painted a more animation-accurate white, also present on renders featuringSmashdown,andfournull-rays on his Jet mode, with two of them attached at the turbines of his chest, which is impossible to do on the toy. The render also depicts his shoulder joints as being molded in blue and knee joints in white, whereas the prototype has their colors swapped.
While the null-rays can be wielded by his pair of hands, it's almost impossible for him to properly hold them due to the size of his forearms. He still can hold theMegatrongun from theSelectsCenturion Droidvery finely, though.
At leastonecopy features a factory misassembled figure with a newly tooled head sculpt[4](with his expression being based on him being disintegrated by Galvatron inThe Transformers: The Movie) which was meant forSkywarp.
Like all Earthrise toys, the inside of the back of Starscream's package includes an exclusive clip-and-save piece of a larger star map. Also in the box is a thin red piece of transparent plastic with which to read markings on the map. Unusually for a larger Earthrise toy, Starscream's piece of the map does not contain the labeled location of a named planet; however, it does include an unlabeled image of the planetJupiter, slightly obscured by another smaller sphere. It also shows a sliver ofCybertron, one of several planets too big for one map piece.
Both this release and all subsequent releases of the mold have a missing molded panel-line detail on the right wing hinge that is supposed to curve in towards the body of the jet. The reason for this missing detail is likely due to it missing from the metal mold itself.

KingdomCore Class Starscream is a roughly Legends-sized toy that can interact with Titan Class figures, although its product description states that it is designed to pose with larger Starscream toys. Starscream comes with his signature weapons—a pair of null-rays, which can either be plugged into his arms or held as handguns.
The peg holes featured on Starscream's shoulders are hexagonal as opposed to circular, which means that the Null Rays are prone to popping off when rotated onto that peg hole.

Megatron has fallen! I, Starscream, am now your Leader Class!
  • Coronation Starscream(Leader Class,2022)
Part of the 8th wave ofStudio SeriesLeader Class toys, "Coronation Starscream" is a retool of theEarthriseStarscreamabove, with newly-molded hands with hinged knuckles, the coronation gear fromThe Transformers: The Movie,a second pair of null-rays, and theNemesiscommand chairfrom "More than Meets the Eye, Part 1."The toy lacks the paint applications on his tail fins and the gunmetal grey below and above his shin vents, but adds additional grey squares to his jet mode forcloser accuracyto the movie. Additionally, various colors are a slightly different shade (red is more crimson, helmet is more gunmetal, blue is more electric) and the Decepticon sigils on his wings are larger. Strangely, the pins on the legs of theEarthriseversion have been swapped out for screws. Because of how the index-to-pinky fingers are designed, it results in a rather strange-looking fist when closed.
The cape is sculpted plastic that is hinged to flair out like theMasterpieceMP-11 toyabove, however the cape cannot flare up to a 90 degree angle without clashing against the ground. it also has a C.O.M.B.A.T. System-style 5 mm post, allowinganyone compatibleto have a lavender cape. The shoulder pads feature flip-down panels with a 5 mm port to attach the differently-molded null-rays, designed to fit with the new armor pieces. By coincidence or design, these additional null-rays can fit into his new hands (if they are completely closed) without bumping into the forearms like the original pair. Naturally, these add-ons, barring the Coneheads for the crown, fit other versions of theEarthriseSeeker mold, so have fun!
The "throne" features storage on the back for all the accessories, including multiple 5 mm ports. Starscream himself can only barely sit in it (without the cape on, of course), but the more source-appropriateSiegeMegatrontoy fits in very nicely.
Like all other uses of the mold, Starscream has a missing molded panel-line detail on the right wing hinge that is supposed to curve in towards the body of the jet. The reason for this missing detail is likely due to it missing from the metal mold itself.
Starscream proved to be a notoriousshelfwarmerin 2022 & 2023, owing to being a repack of the widely-distributedEarthrisefigure at a higher price with a few more accessories, as well as being ordered in bulk. Not helping matters was the fact he got repacked in the following wave containingSludge.

Beast Wars Again

Okay, but where's Sunstorm?
Released as part of theBeast Wars Againline, the "Phantom Showdown" ( u huyễn の đối quyết ) set pits "Haunted Waspeeter"against" Ghost Starscream ", aredecoof theEarthriseStarscream mold(with the hinged knuckles used for theStudio Series'86 figureand the pre-tooled alternate head released withSkywarp) in mostly translucent plastic. Starscream also features redDecepticoninsigniaon his wings, in reference to theodd color choicesused for hischaracter modelin theBeast Warsepisode "Possession".
All of the parts that were originally cast inunpaintable plasticremain cast in opaque colors, as the unpaintable parts are required for the figure to function. This ultimately means that the full transparent "ghost" effect suffers as a result of the mold layout, since the parts that make up his biceps, forearms and hands are also a part of the unpaintable plastic molds.

Reactivate

A jet held together with scrap metal is still more comfortable than your average American Airlines flight.
  • Starscream & Bumblebee(2024)
ReactivateStarscream transforms into a post-apocalyptic jet fighter. He comes with a pair of blasters, which can be mounted onto his wrists. Starscream was only available withBumblebee.Care should be taken when unclipping Starscream's head during transformation, as it latches in place for robot mode with averysmall, but very secure hook that will bend or break under pressure.
This boxset was abruptly revealed byToys "R" UsCanada on October 18, 2023, after nearly ten months of silence regarding the upcomingTransformers: Reactivateonline game. Notably, stock photography of the box and the official product copy used "Rise", an earlier name for the game; Yet it was changed when it was shown off on the Hasbro Pulse Fanstream.

Notes

G2SSJungleprotojet.jpg
  • During the development of theConeheads,Ramjetwas initially planned as new wing tooling attached to an unchanged Starscream body. Thisprototypeplan lasted long enough to receivepackage art, which was published decades later inLegacy: The Art of Transformers Packaging.
  • In the 1990s, Hasbro evidently had more redeco plans for Starscream (and the pairedRamjet) that fell through:
    • A hand-painted mock-up and accompanying artwork for a proposed Generation 2-era redeco of Starscream appeared in auctions on eBay, amongst similar items put up for sale from the collection of a former Hasbro employee. In2020,this black redeco of Starscream was revealed to have been labeled by Hasbro as "Blackout".Said redeco was probably planned for release alongside the Ramjet redeco named"Sandstorm".
    • Another unproduced redeco of Starscream for theGeneration 2line was found in 2007, in an auction on eBay. It is commonly known to the fandom as "jungle attack Starscream" (as seen to the right). It is unclear if it was intended to be another Starscream toy or a new character; it may have been paired for release with "cloud camo Ramjet",who was discovered at a similar level of" completion ".
  • During early planning forBeast Wars,Hasbro conceivedMcDonald'stoys of vehicularAuto Rollers, including one of Starscream as a jet.[9]This toy concept may have been a parallel idea to the unreleasedGeneration 2jet Auto Rollerultimately used in Japan asBeast Wars IIAutojetter.
  • Aside from Starscream'sUnite WarriorsDeluxe Class toy (as the alternate head ofCombiner WarsSkydive) and hisPower of the PrimesVoyager Class toy (as his own body tooling), Hasbro also designed an unused combining body for Starscream as the "pretooled" alternate head ofCombiner WarsVoyager ClassCyclonus.Presumably, theGalvatronusCombiner head would be redecoed in homage to Starscream's famous crown.
