แม่น้ำคงคาเป็นแม่น้ำระหว่างประเทศในทวีปเอเชียไหลผ่านประเทศอินเดียและบังกลาเทศมีความยาว 2,525 km (1,569 mi) จากต้นน้ำในเทือกเขาหิมาลัยในรัฐอุตตราขัณฑ์ไหลลงทางใต้ละตะวันออกผ่านที่ราบลุ่มแม่น้ำคงคาในอินเดียเหนือเข้าสู่ประเทศบังกลาเทศ และไหลลงอ่าวเบงกอลเป็นแหล่งน้ำให้กับประชากร 11% ของโลก เนื่องจากพื้นที่ที่แม่น้ำไหลผ่านเป็นหนึ่งในพื้นที่ที่มีประชากรหนาแน่นที่สุดในโลก และเป็นแม่น้ำใหญ่ที่สุดอันดับที่สามในโลกตามจำนวนการปล่อยน้ำ[5]
แม่น้ำคงคาเป็นแม่น้ำที่ศักดิ์สิทธิ์สูงสุดในศาสนาฮินดู[6]และเป็นแม่น้ำสายสำคัญที่ช่วยให้ผู้คนริมฝั่งดำรงและดำเนินชีวิตได้[7]ในทางฮินดูนับถือแม่น้ำคงคาในรูปของพระแม่คงคา[8]นอกจากนี้แม่น้ำคงคายังมีความสำคัญในทางประวัติศาสตร์ ราชธานีของจักรวรรดิและอาณาจักรในอดีตจำนวนมากตั้งรกรากริมฝั่งแม่น้ำคงคา เช่นปาฏลีบุตร[9]Kannauj,[9]การท,มุงเคร์,กาษี,ปัฏณา,ฮะยีปุระ,เดลี,ภคัลปุระ,มูรชีดาบาด,พหรามปุระ,กัมปิลยะและโกลกาตาต้นน้ำหลักของแม่น้ำคงคาอยู่ที่เมืองเทวปรยาค[1]จุดบรรจบกับแม่น้ำอลากานันทาต้นน้ำทางอุทกวิทยา(เพราะมีความยาวมากกว่า) และแม่น้ำภาคีรฐีต้นน้ำในทางตำนานของฮินดู[1]
แม่น้ำคงคามีปัญหามลพิษขั้นรุนแรงซึ่งส่งผลกระทบต่อผู้คนและสัตว์ที่เกี่ยวพันกับแม่น้ำ ในแม่น้ำคงคาเป็นแหล่งอาศัยของปลาประมาณ 140 สปีชีส์ และสัตว์ครึ่งน้ำครึ่งบกอีกกส่า 90 สปีชีส์ รวมถึงสัตว์เลื้อยคลานและสัตว์เลี้ยงลูกด้วยนมอื่น ๆ ซึ่งมีสปีชีส์เสี่ยงสูญพันธุ์สูงสุดอย่างฆาริยัลและโลมาแม่น้ำเอเชียใต้[10]ระดับของแบคทีเรียในลำใส้ใหญ่มนุษย์ที่ขับถ่ายออกมาทางอุจจาระในแม่น้ำช่วงพาราณสีมีสูงมากกว่าหนึ่งร้อยเท่าของระดับปลอดภัยที่รัฐบาลอินเดียกำหนด[10]โครงการคงคาแอกชั่นแพลาซึ่งจัดตั้งขึ้นเพื่อทำความสะอาดแม่น้ำคงคาก็ล้มเหลวอย่างหนัก[a][b][11]อันเป็นผลจากการฉ้อโกง,การขาดความใส่ใจจากรัฐบาล, การขาดความพร้อมทางเทคโนโลยี,[c]การวางแผนทางสิ่งแวดล้อม[d]และการขาดความร่วมมือจากผู้นำทางศาสนาในท้องถิ่น[e]
