"transcript ":" I’m really pleased to be able to tell you about one of the fabulous Ossie Clark dresses that we have at the Museum of London. This particular dress we bought in 2003, and we bought it at auction, which unfortunately means we don’t know an awful lot about it. I could see from the records that it was bought primarily to show how Ossie Clark was using Celia Birtwell fabrics and Celia Birtwell is actually credited on the label of the dress. I’m so pleased we now know quite a lot more about the dress because of the wonderful people in the archive at Manolo Blahnik who have given us quite a bit of information. It turns out that the dress is connected to a very, very famous Ossie Clark fashion show that happened in 1971, that Suzy Menkes called at one point, “one of the most important points in fashion history.” \nSo the other point I’d like to make is that Ossie Clark’s fashion shows were famous for being sort of like happenings in a way. There were always a lot of VIPs so for instance he had in one fashion show, which he held near Berkley Square, he had Yoko Ono and John Lennon. Then in another show he had fashionable people from way back, he had Cecil Beaton and Lady Diana Cooper. So, before I say more about the famous, spectacular fashion show, I want to say a few words about the dress itself. I’m really pleased I now have a reason to look at it properly.\nWhen you read about Ossie Clark there are some words that come up again and again, and the words are sensuous, sexy, clingy, that kind of thing. Result-wear is another expression I’ve seen a few times, but the other important word that people use all the time is magic and magician. Vogue actually called him the ‘Wizard of Ossie’ in 1968. So, this fashion show, which happened on the 25th May 1971 at the Royal Court Theatre, Sloane Square, London, was actually sponsored by a chocolate brand called ‘Black Magic’ and it was meant to start at midnight - I don’t think you could get away with that now! - But apparently it only started at 2:30 in the morning, and apparently Ossie Clark could be seen dressing the models behind a sort of gauze-like screen. So, everyone had to wait. And I’m saying apparently quite a lot, because annoyingly with the early fashion shows, not a lot of photos were taken. But this fashion show was actually quite different, because we do have a little bit of footage, and this was taken for a semi-fictional documentary about David Hockney and some other people he knew and it’s quite a short clip, but it gives a tantalising clip of this particular fashion show. Again, that night there was a lot of VIPs, Patti Boyd was one of the models, she was the wife of George Harrison, one of The Beatles, who was also in the audience. Apparently Paul and Linda McCartney were in the audience, David Bailey and Penelope Tree also were there. So, a lot of famous people.\nAnother reason why this show is really important, is because it’s the first collection where Manolo Blahnik and Ossie Clark collaborated. In fact, it’s one of the very first shows Manolo Blahnik ever did of shoes. And he explained later on that he didn’t have much experience at the time, and he didn’t know that you needed to put steel rods into very high heeled shoes, which these were. Another thing I noticed when I was looking at the footage a few times, is that Celia Birtwell seems to wear a dress of exactly the same fabric, and it also seems to appear later on in a cape. So, that was also very interesting to see. I’m really, really pleased that now, you know, looking at all of this, and getting the information from the archive, that we now know so much more about this amazing dress that we have in the collection. We have the proper date, and we know that it is connected in some way to the fabulous fashion show of 1971. "
