Now here's something I've been working on for quite some time now: a piano fantasy on Hitoshi Sakimoto's music from Vagrant Story!
Vagrant Story was pretty much a ground-breaking game for its time -- but the same can be said about the soundtrack, in my opinion. While most game soundtracks were very melodic back then, Vagrant Story was ahead of its time, being very ambient and masterly creating atmosphere. Regardless, there are some fantastic themes that serve as very flexible leitmotivs.
It's often said that Sakimoto's music would be difficult to arrange for piano, but I actually think his music is very much suited for arrangements in the classical (romantic) pianistic tradition, since he has a very unique voice in his music. With this arrangement, I wanted to explore the world and story of Vagrant Story, while making full use of all the colours and sonority the modern concert grand has to offer, and retaining the atmosphere of the original music as much as possible. It roughly follows the story of the protagonist Ashley Riot. (Since expressing the full, complex story in music isn't really possible...) Here's a full breakdown of everything that can be heard, divided in five sections, although it's still one big piece:
1. 'Leá Monde Town Center'. The opening of the piece introduces the location where most of the game is played, the old city of Leá Monde. While this track is somewhere in the middle of disc one, it actually is the opening cinematic music, which makes it a fitting opener to this fantasy. After its climax, it transitions into 'Preface -- Greylands Incident Investigation Report', where another recurring theme is introduced. After a snippet of 'Climax of the Greylands Incident' disturbingly interrupts, the music begins to grow out of the darkness, to...
2. A glorious statement of Vagrant Story's main theme. I'm not really sure if it is also meant as Ashley's theme, but at least in this arrangement it functions as it. The theme continues in the track 'Remembrance', but in a more improvisatory manner. One of the few light sections of the piece, it resembles the happy memory of Ashley with his family. However... since Ashley is brainwashed, it's 'A False Memory'! (The track title being a spoiler in itself...) The music suddenly turns extremely dissonant and harsh as Ashley's supposed family gets brutally murdered before his own eyes. After this, we get thrown into the action immediately.
3. A snippet of 'Crimson Blades' is heard, which introduces the frightening theme/motif of Guildenstern, the primary antagonist. The opening chords of the first battle theme, 'Minotaur' follow, while Guildenstern's Motif can still be heard in the left hand. The next part is a cinematic section from 'Climax of the Greylands Incident'. It seamlessly transitions to 'Limestone Quarry', musically expressing one of the gameplay locations as well. Then, after another statement of the Main Theme, it's time again for battle themes: 'Climax of the Greylands Incident' returns, but now the latter part, the Wyvern battle theme. Not only that, but the heroic 'Ifrit' battle theme also appears. As the climax comes near, concluding chords of 'Banquet of Transmigration' are heard, and then Guildenstern's Motif grows and grows. After a thunderous explosion of octaves (I'd like to think Ashley makes a severe hit), 'Power of the Last' symbolizes Guildenstern's last stand and then the end of 'Climax of the Greylands Incident' marks his defeat as Ashley emerges victorious. (Actually in the game, Guildenstern still has his final form left and gets defeated only after the next segment, oh well.)
4. The music calms down and the track 'Truth' is fully presented. Personally I felt that this track is the emotional climax of the soundtrack, which is why I included it here. Ashley is told to release the darkness from him and to believe what is heart says. The flashback to his family comes back, this time ending in peace. Whether they are his family or not, or whether they were murdered yes or no, the truth is up to the player, I guess.
5. The final segment contains some of the ending music and reprises some themes. First, a part of 'Leá Monde at Dawn' is heard, which is in fact a reprise of 'Preface'. A small part of 'Escape' is also featured. The Leá Monde theme in 'Epilogue' makes it last appearance as a kind of retrospect, as the city is no more. It goes back to 'Leá Monde at Dawn', reprising a theme from 'Greylands Incident Investigation Report'. At last, the Main Theme is heard again, but now in its full glory. I took this from 'Staff Roll', since that's (I think) the only track in the soundtrack where the short main theme gets extended with more, beautiful melodic material. It builds to a majestic climax, which marks the end of this fantasy!I
