670 ‎‡a Carleton Smith (b. Robert Carleton Smith, February 19, 1908, Bement, Illinois-d. May 28, 1984, Centre Island, New York) was a writer and a critic on the arts, and a foundation executive who helped establish the Pritzker Prize for architecture. He received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Illinois in 1927 and a Master of Arts from the University of Maryland in 1928. Smith was also a student at the University of Chicago from 1928 to 1930, attended the London School of Economics, and received an LL.D. from Marietta College in 1952. He also received an honorary A.F.D. from James Milliken University in 1956. Smith worked as a member of the research staff in the School of Commerce and Business Administration at the University of Chicago in 1928. He was an instructor of economics and foreign trade at DePaul University from 1928 to 1930 and an assistant professor from 1930 to 1934. Smith also taught music history at Oxford University from 1931 to 1939. He was a music editor at Esquire magazine from 1934-1942, a critic and columnist for Coronet from 1936 to 1942, and a European correspondent for the New York Herald Tribune. He also worked for Rubber Development Corporation from 1942 to 1943, Celotex Corporation from 1943 to 1945, and was a public relations advisor to various corporations. Smith was a founder and director of the National Arts Foundation from 1947 to 1954, then served as the chairman of the advisory committee. He was a consultant for public affairs to the Austrian Foreign Ministry from 1962 to 1968, and a chairman of the advisory committee of the International Communications Foundation from 1969 to 1979. Smith was chairman of the International Awards Foundation from 1979 until his death. He was a frequent traveler around Europe, and had a home in Gryon, Switzerland. He is the son of Roy Harte and Kathryn Cosette (Ravellon). Smith married Anne Josephe Boireau in 1957, and they had three children, Christophe, Colombe, and Raphael. He is interred in Bement Cemetery in Bement, Illinois‏
