670 ‎‡a A biographical dictionary of actors, actresses, musicians, dancers, managers, and other stage personnel in London, 1660-1800, 1973:‏ ‎‡b page 223 (Baker, George 1773?-1847; organist, violinist, pianist, composer; Grove's Dictionary dates his birth as 1768 but he gave his age as 24 when he matriculated at Oxford in 1797; he studied under the locally renowned composer Hugh Bond, and was later a pupil of William Jackson; by his 16th year he was leader of concerts in his neighbourhood; when he was about 17 he came to London as the protégé of the Earl of Uxbridge who, according to Sainsbury, subsidized his lessons on the violin under Cramer the elder and on the pianoforte under Dussek; Uxbridge also arranged public performances in the Hanover Square Rooms, where Baker performed his famous piece The Storm; in 1794 he was appointed organist of St Mary's, Stafford; the Alumni Oxoniensis states that he was 24 years old when he matriculated at St Edmund Hall on July 1, 1797; he resigned from St Mary's in 1800 after an unhappy tenure; in 1810 he was appointed as organist at All Saints, Derby, and in 1824 he went as organist to Rugeley, where he remained in tenure until his death on February 19, 1847; he composed many songs for the theatrical singer Incledon and also composed some glees, a number of organ voluntaries, pianforte sonatas, and anthems)‏
